How to Spread Bet on Morgan Sindall Shares

If an investor is looking to invest in UK companies such as Morgan Sindall then one possibility could be to spread bet on the Morgan Sindall share price.

By spread betting on Morgan Sindall, you can bet on the share price to either increase or decrease.

If an investor was to look at the FinancialSpreads spread trading site, they are currently valuing the Morgan Sindall (December) market at 565.6p - 572.0p. Therefore, you could spread trade on the Morgan Sindall share price closing:
  • higher than 572.0p, or
  • lower than 565.6p
On the closing date for this 'December' market, 15-Dec-09.

When spread betting on UK shares you trade in £x per penny. Therefore, if you staked £6 per penny and the Morgan Sindall share price moves 8p then that would be a difference to your profit/loss of £48. £6 per penny x 8p = £48.

Morgan Sindall Equities Trading Example

So, if you consider the spread of 565.6p - 572.0p and assume that:
  • you have analysed the equities market, and
  • it leads you to think that the Morgan Sindall share price looks like it will close higher than 572.0p on 15-Dec-09
Then, accordingly, you might decide that you are going to buy a spread bet at 572.0p for a stake of, for the sake of argument, £3 per penny.

So, you win £3 for every penny that the Morgan Sindall shares settle above 572.0p. However, it also means that you will make a loss of £3 for every penny that the Morgan Sindall share price finishes lower than 572.0p.

Thinking of this in a slightly different way, should you buy a spread bet then your profit/loss is found by taking the difference between the final price of the market and the initial price you bought the market at. You then multiply that price difference by the stake.

Subsequently, if, on the settlement date, the Morgan Sindall share price closes at 600.0p, then:

P&L = (Closing Level - Opening Level) x stake.

P&L = (600.0p - 572.0p) x £3 per penny stake.

P&L = 28p x £3 per penny stake.

P&L = £84.00 profit.

Trading shares, by spread trading or otherwise, is not simple. In this example, you wanted the share price to rise. However, the share price can also fall.

If the Morgan Sindall stock had fallen, closing down at 545.0p, you would end up making a loss and losing money on this spread bet.

P&L = (Closing Level - Opening Level) x stake.

P&L = (545.0p - 572.0p) x £3 per penny stake.

P&L = -27p x £3 per penny stake.

P&L = -£81.00 loss.

Note: Morgan Sindall equities market accurate as of 06-Nov-09.
