How to Spread Bet on Morgan Advanced Materials

How to Spread Bet on Morgan Advanced Materials?

Should you want to invest in firms like Morgan Advanced Materials then one possibility is to spread bet on the Morgan Advanced Materials share price.

Looking at a financial spread betting platform like Capitalspreads, you can see they are currently showing the Morgan Advanced Materials Rolling Daily market at 259.6p - 261.4p. This means an investor could spread bet on the Morgan Advanced Materials share price:

Morgan Advanced Materials Spread Betting Example Moving higher than 261.4p, or
Morgan Advanced Materials Trading Example Moving lower than 259.6p

When making a spread bet on FTSE 350 equities you trade in £x per penny. So, if you staked £5 per penny and the Morgan Advanced Materials shares move 32p then that would be a difference to your profit/loss of £160. £5 per penny x 32p = £160.

Rolling Daily Shares Markets

You should note that this is a 'Rolling Daily Market', therefore unlike a normal spread betting futures market, there is no settlement date. Therefore, if you decide not to close your trade by the end of the day, it simply keeps rolling over into the next day.

If you allow your bet to roll over and are spread betting on the market to:

Morgan Advanced Materials Trading Example Go up - then you usually pay a small overnight financing fee, or
Morgan Advanced Materials Trading Example Go down - then a small payment is usually credited to your account

For a more detailed example see Rolling Daily Spread Betting.

Morgan Advanced Materials Rolling Daily - Shares Trading Example

If we continue with the above spread of 259.6p - 261.4p and assume that:
  • You've completed your research, and
  • Your research leads you to think the Morgan Advanced Materials shares look like they will increase and move above 261.4p
Then you may decide that you are going to buy at 261.4p and risk, for example, £15 per penny.

Therefore, you make a profit of £15 for every penny that the Morgan Advanced Materials shares push higher than 261.4p. On the other hand, such a bet also means you will make a loss of £15 for every penny that the Morgan Advanced Materials market goes below 261.4p.

Looking at this from another angle, if you were to buy a spread bet then your P&L is worked out by taking the difference between the closing price of the market and the initial price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that difference in price by your stake.

If after a few sessions the shares rose then you might want to close your trade in order to secure your profit. So if the market moved up then the spread, determined by the spread betting company, could be adjusted to 269.1p - 270.9p. You would close your position by selling at 269.1p. So, with the same £15 stake you would calculate your profit as:

Your profit / loss = (Final Level - Initial Level) x stake
Your profit / loss = (269.1p - 261.4p) x £15 per penny stake
Your profit / loss = 7.7p x £15 per penny stake
Your profit / loss = £115.50 profit

Speculating on equities, whether by spread trading or otherwise, is not straightforward. In this example, you wanted the share price to increase. However, it might decrease.

If the Morgan Advanced Materials stock began to fall then you might decide to settle/close your position in order to restrict your losses.

If the spread fell to 252.9p - 254.7p you would close your trade by selling at 252.9p. If so, that would mean you would lose:

Your profit / loss = (Final Level - Initial Level) x stake
Your profit / loss = (252.9p - 261.4p) x £15 per penny stake
Your profit / loss = -8.5p x £15 per penny stake
Your profit / loss = -£127.50 loss

Note: Morgan Advanced Materials Rolling Daily spread betting market quoted as of 16-Apr-13.
