How to Spread Bet on Mitie Group

How to Spread Bet on Mitie Group?

If you want to speculate on firms such as Mitie Group then one possibility could be spread trading on the Mitie Group share price.

Looking at a platform like InterTrader, we can see they are currently pricing the Mitie Group Rolling Daily market at 291.9p - 293.0p. As a result, you can spread bet on the Mitie Group share price:

Mitie Group Spread Betting Example Moving above 293.0p, or
Mitie Group Spread Trading Example Moving below 291.9p

Whilst financial spread betting on UK equities you trade in £x per penny. So, if you decide to invest £4 per penny and the Mitie Group share price changes by 36p then that would make a difference to your P&L of £144. £4 per penny x 36p = £144.

Rolling Daily Equities Markets

One important thing to note is that this is a Rolling Daily Market and so there is no preset settlement date for this market. If a trade is still open when the markets close at the end of the day, it will just roll over into the next trading session.

If your bet does roll over and you are speculating on the market to:

Mitie Group Spread Trading Example Rise - then you would normally pay a small financing fee, or
Mitie Group Spread Trading Example Fall - then you will usually receive a small credit to your account

You can learn more in our feature Rolling Daily Spread Betting.

Mitie Group Rolling Daily - Shares Spread Trading Example

So, if you consider the spread of 291.9p - 293.0p and assume that:
  • You've completed your research, and
  • You feel that the Mitie Group share price looks like it will rise above 293.0p
Then you could decide that you are going to buy at 293.0p for a stake of, for example, £10 per penny.

With such a spread bet you make a profit of £10 for every penny that the Mitie Group shares push higher than 293.0p. Conversely, however, you will make a loss of £10 for every penny that the Mitie Group market decreases lower than 293.0p.

Put another way, should you ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your profits (or losses) are worked out by taking the difference between the final price of the market and the price you bought the market at. You then multiply that difference in price by your stake.

Therefore, if after a few hours the shares started to increase then you might want to close your spread bet so that you can guarantee your profit. As an example, should the market rise, the spread, set by the spread trading firm, might move up to 305.5p - 306.6p. To close your position you would sell at 305.5p. As a result, with the same £10 stake this trade would result in a profit of:

P&L = (Closing Price - Opening Price) x stake
P&L = (305.5p - 293.0p) x £10 per penny stake
P&L = 12.5p x £10 per penny stake
P&L = £125.00 profit

Trading equities, whether by spread betting or not, doesn't always work out as you would have liked. In the above example, you had bet that the share price would increase. Nevertheless, it might decrease.

If the Mitie Group share price weakened, against your expectations, then you could close your position in order to restrict your losses.

So if the market fell to 278.6p - 279.7p you would settle/close your trade by selling at 278.6p. That would mean you would lose:

P&L = (Closing Price - Opening Price) x stake
P&L = (278.6p - 293.0p) x £10 per penny stake
P&L = -14.4p x £10 per penny stake
P&L = -£144.00 loss

Note - Mitie Group Rolling Daily market accurate as of 31-Oct-12.
