If you are looking to speculate on European listed companies like L'Oreal then one solution could be spread betting on the L'Oreal share price.
If an investor was to look at the FinancialSpreads spread betting website, they are valuing the L'Oreal Rolling Daily market at €85.74 - €86.00. As a result, an investor can spread bet on the L'Oreal share price:
- Rising higher than €86.00, or
- Falling lower than €85.74

L'Oreal Rolling Daily - French Shares Spread Trading Example
So, if you consider the above spread of €85.74 - €86.00 and make the assumptions:
- you have done your market analysis, and
- you think that the L'Oreal shares look like they will rise higher than €86.00
then you may choose to buy at €86.00 for a stake of £1 per cent.
This means that you make a profit of £1 for every cent that the L'Oreal shares increase and go above €86.00. However, it also means that you will lose £1 for every cent that the L'Oreal market decreases lower than €86.00.
Considering this from another angle, should you buy a spread bet then your profits are calculated by taking the difference between the closing price of the market and the initial price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that difference in price by your stake.
If after a few trading sessions the shares started to increase then you might want to close your spread bet to lock in your profit.
So if the market rose then the spread, determined by the spread betting company, could be adjusted to €88.00 - €88.26. You would settle your position by selling at €88.00. Accordingly, with the same £1 stake your profit would come to:
P&L = (Final Value - Opening Value) x stake
P&L = (€88.00 - €86.00) x £1 per cent stake
P&L = €2.00 x £1 per cent stake
P&L = 200c x £1 per cent stake
P&L = £200 profit
Speculating on shares, whether by spread trading or otherwise, can work against you. In this case, you had bet that the share price would rise. Naturally, the share price might go down.
If the L'Oreal stock weakened, against your expectations, then you might decide to settle/close your trade in order to limit your losses.
Should the market pull back to €84.28 - €84.54 you would settle your trade by selling at €84.28. That would mean you would lose:
P&L = (Final Value - Opening Value) x stake
P&L = (€84.28 - €86.00) x £1 per cent stake
P&L = -€1.72 x £1 per cent stake
P&L = -172c x £1 per cent stake
P&L = -£172 loss
