How to Spread Trade on Equities - International Power Shares?
At the time of publication the International Power (December) market is 251.3p - 252.4p with CapitalSpreads. This market expires on 15-Dec-09.
Like many financial markets, you can spread bet on the future price of shares, like International Power shares, rising or falling.
Therefore, you can financial spread bet on International Power shares settling:
- Above 252.4p, or
- Below 251.3p
On the expiry date for this equities market, 15-Dec-09.
When spread trading on UK shares you trade in £x per penny, where a penny, in this case, is 1p of International Power share price movement.
For example, if your stake was £10 per penny and the International Power shares move 5p then that would be a £50 difference to your profit/loss.
Financial Spread Betting Example - International Power
So looking at an example, let's say we take the above spread of 251.3p - 252.4p and you have done your market analysis and judge that the International Power shares looks like they will rise to more than 252.4p by 15-Dec-09.
As a result, you buy at 252.4p for a stake of, let's say, £5 per penny.
When you 'Buy' a spread trade your P&L is calculated by taking the difference between the settlement value of the market and the opening price and then multiplying that difference by the stake per penny of share price movement.
And so let's say that by the end date, ie 15-Dec-09, the market has a settlement value of 280p, then:
Profit and Loss = (280.0p - 252.4p) x £5 per penny stake.
= 27.6p x £5 per penny stake.
= £138 profit.
Trading does not always go to plan.
If the International Power stock gone against you, settling lower at 225p, you would have made a loss on this market.
Profit and Loss = (225.0p - 252.4p) x £5 per penny stake.
= -27.4p x £5 per penny stake.
= -£137 loss.
