How to Spread Bet on French Shares - Lagardere Rolling Daily

Should an investor want to invest in European listed companies such as Lagardere then one solution could be to spread bet on the Lagardere share price.

If an investor was to look at the Tradefair site, they are valuing the Lagardere Rolling Daily market at €31.03 - €31.14. Therefore, you could spread bet on the Lagardere shares:
  • Rising above €31.14, or
  • Falling below €31.03
Whilst placing a spread bet on French equities you trade in £x per cent. Therefore, should you choose to risk £6 per cent and the Lagardere share price changes by €0.05 then that would be a difference to your profits (or losses) of £30. £6 per cent x €0.05 = £30.

Note that you are also able to spread bet on this market in Euros or Dollars, e.g. €x per cent.

Rolling Daily Equities Markets

One important thing to note is that this is a 'Rolling Daily Market' and therefore it does not have a settlement date. If your trade is open at the end of the day, it will stay open and roll over into the next day.

If your bet is rolled over and you are speculating that the market will:
  • Go up - then you will be charged a small overnight financing fee, or
  • Go down - then a small payment is normally credited to your account
To learn more about Rolling Daily Markets please see Rolling Daily Spread Betting.

Lagardere Rolling Daily - French Equities Spread Betting Example

Now, if we think about the above spread of €31.03 - €31.14 and make the assumptions that:
  • you have done your market analysis, and
  • you think that the Lagardere shares look like they will increase and go higher than €31.14
then you may decide that you are going to go long of the market at €31.14 for a stake of, let’s say, £3 per cent.

Therefore, you make a profit of £3 for every cent that the Lagardere shares rise above €31.14. Conversely, however, it also means that you will make a loss of £3 for every cent that the Lagardere market falls lower than €31.14.

Put another way, if you buy a spread bet then your profits are worked out by taking the difference between the settlement price of the market and the price you bought the market at. You then multiply that difference in price by the stake.

If after a few days the stock started to move upwards then you could choose to close your position and therefore guarantee your profits. Therefore, if the market moved up then the spread might move to €31.58 - €31.69. In order to close your trade you would sell at €31.58. So, with the same £3 stake your profit would be calculated as:

Profit = (Closing Value - Initial Value) x stake
Profit = (€31.58 - €31.14) x £3 per cent stake
Profit = €0.44 x £3 per cent stake
Profit = 44c x £3 per cent stake
Profit = £132 profit

Speculating on equities, whether by spread betting or otherwise, is not simple. With this example, you had bet that the share price would rise. Nevertheless, the share price could fall.

If the Lagardere shares had started to fall then you might choose to close your position in order to limit your losses.

So if the spread fell to €30.74 - €30.85 then this means you would close your position by selling at €30.74. So your loss would be calculated as:

Loss = (Closing Value - Initial Value) x stake
Loss = (€30.74 - €31.14) x £3 per cent stake
Loss = -€0.40 x £3 per cent stake
Loss = -40c x £3 per cent stake
Loss = -£120 loss

Where can I Find Live Prices on Lagardere?

If you want to access live spread betting markets, including French shares, then you generally need to open an account with a spread betting company. Note that accounts are subject to status.

The spread betting firms listed on this page do not charge fees for account applications.

If your application is approved then you can log on to their website and access their Live Prices and charts. There is no charge for looking at their prices.

The catch? You'll get the odd email or letter from them. The companies below also offer clients access to candlestick charts.

Of course, if you do trade then you should note that spread trading carries a high level of risk to your capital and you could lose more than your initial investment.

Live prices are available for account holders at:

Where can I Find Candlestick Charts for Lagardere?

Like live prices, if you want to access candlestick charts for French shares then you generally need to open an account with a spread betting company that offers French shares. Note that accounts are subject to status.

If your application is approved then you can log on to their website and access their candlestick charts.

You can usually alter the charts to see market data by the tick, by the minute, by the hour, by the week etc. There are also other options that allow you to easily add analysis such as Moving Averages and Bollinger Bands.

As you can see the charts show how French share prices, as with most financial spread betting markets, are not perfect and how you can expect the prices to "gap".
