How to Spread Bet on Lafarge

How to Spread Bet on Lafarge?

If you decide to invest in companies such as Lafarge then one solution could be spread trading on the Lafarge share price.

Looking at InterTrader, you can see that they are currently valuing the Lafarge Rolling Daily market at €46.14 - €46.26. Therefore, an investor could spread bet on the Lafarge share price:

Lafarge Spread Trading Example Moving higher than €46.26, or
Lafarge Trading Example Moving lower than €46.14

When financial spread trading on French shares you trade in £x per cent. So, if you chose to have a stake of £4 per cent and the Lafarge share price changes by €0.23 then that would change your profit/loss by £92. £4 per cent x €0.23 = £92.

Note that you can also spread bet on this market in Euros or Dollars, e.g. $x per cent.

Rolling Daily Equities Markets

An important aspect of this Rolling Daily Market is that there is no preset settlement date for this market. Should your trade be left open at the end of the trading day, it just rolls over to the next day.

If you do let your position roll over into the next day and are spread betting on the market to:

Lafarge Trading Example Increase - then you usually pay a small overnight financing fee, or
Lafarge Trading Example Decrease - then you will usually receive a small credit to your account

You can learn more about Rolling Daily Markets in our article Rolling Daily Spread Betting.

So, if we think about the above spread of €46.14 - €46.26 and assume that:
  • You've completed your company analysis, and
  • Your research leads you to think the Lafarge shares are likely to increase and move higher than €46.26
Then you may choose to go long of the market at €46.26 and invest £5 per cent.

Therefore, you win £5 for every cent that the Lafarge shares push above €46.26. Of course, it also means that you will lose £5 for every cent that the Lafarge market falls below €46.26.

Put another way, if you ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your profit/loss is found by taking the difference between the closing price of the market and the price you bought the market at. You then multiply that difference in price by your stake.

If after a few days the share price started to increase then you might want to close your spread bet in order to lock in your profit. Taking this a step further, if the market did go up then the spread, set by the spread trading firm, might move up to €46.54 - €46.66. You would settle your position by selling at €46.54. Accordingly, with the same £5 stake this trade would result in a profit of:

Your P&L = (Closing Price - Initial Price) x stake
Your P&L = (€46.54 - €46.26) x £5 per cent stake
Your P&L = €0.28 x £5 per cent stake
Your P&L = 28c x £5 per cent stake
Your P&L = £140 profit

Speculating on shares is not always straightforward. In this example, you had bet that the share price would increase. Of course, the share price can also fall.

If the Lafarge stock fell then you might choose to close your trade in order to restrict your losses.

If the spread dropped to €45.99 - €46.11 then this means you would close your trade by selling at €45.99. If so, that would mean you would lose:

Your P&L = (Closing Price - Initial Price) x stake
Your P&L = (€45.99 - €46.26) x £5 per cent stake
Your P&L = -€0.27 x £5 per cent stake
Your P&L = -27c x £5 per cent stake
Your P&L = -£135 loss

Note - Lafarge Rolling Daily market correct as of 23-Jan-13.
