How to Spread Bet on Irish Shares - Kerry Group Rolling Daily
If an investor wants to speculate on companies like Kerry Group then one possibility could be to place a spread bet on the Kerry Group share price.
If you were to look at the Tradefair site, they are currently giving the Kerry Group Rolling Daily market at €25.43 - €25.51. Therefore, you could spread bet on the Kerry Group share price:
- Rising above €25.51, or
- Falling below €25.43
When financial spread trading on Irish equities you trade in £x per cent. Therefore, if you staked £4 per cent and the Kerry Group shares move €0.05 then that would change your bottom line by £20. £4 per cent x €0.05 = £20.

Rolling Daily Equities Markets
One thing to note is that this is a Rolling Daily Market which means that there is no closing date for this market. If your trade is still open at the end of the trading day, it will roll over to the next session.
If you do roll over a bet and you are spread betting that the market will:
- Go up - then you will normally be charged a small financing fee, or
- Go down - then a small payment is normally credited to your account

Kerry Group Rolling Daily - Irish Shares Trading Example
So, if you think about the spread of €25.43 - €25.51 and assume that:
- you have done your analysis, and
- you think that the Kerry Group shares are likely to increase and move above €25.51
then you might decide to go long of the market at €25.51 for a stake of, for example, £2 per cent.
Therefore, you make a profit of £2 for every cent that the Kerry Group shares rise higher than €25.51. On the other hand, it also means you will make a loss of £2 for every cent that the Kerry Group market moves below €25.51.
Considering this from another angle, should you ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your P&L is calculated by taking the difference between the closing price of the market and the initial price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that price difference by the stake.
As a result, if after a few hours the stock started to rise you might decide to close your spread bet to secure your profit.
So if the market moved up then the spread, set by the spread betting company, could change to €26.02 - €26.10. To close your position you would sell at €26.02. Therefore, with the same £2 stake:
Profit = (Closing Level - Initial Level) x stake
Profit = (€26.02 - €25.51) x £2 per cent stake
Profit = €0.51 x £2 per cent stake
Profit = 51c x £2 per cent stake
Profit = £102 profit
Trading equities is not easy. In the above example, you had bet that the share price would go up. Of course, it can also decrease.
If the Kerry Group share price began to fall then you might decide to settle/close your spread bet to limit your losses.
Should the spread pull back to €24.94 - €25.02 you would close your trade by selling at €24.94. If so, that would mean you would lose:
Loss = (Closing Level - Initial Level) x stake
Loss = (€24.94 - €25.51) x £2 per cent stake
Loss = -€0.57 x £2 per cent stake
Loss = -57c x £2 per cent stake
Loss = -£114 loss
