How to Spread Bet on Joy Global

How to Spread Bet on Joy Global?

If an investor is looking to invest in US companies such as Joy Global then one possibility could be spread trading on the Joy Global share price.

Looking at a spread betting site like Tradefair, we can see that they have priced the Joy Global Rolling Daily market at $62.72 - $62.82. Therefore, you can spread bet on the Joy Global share price:

  Joy Global Spread Betting Example Going above $62.82, or
  Joy Global Trading Example Going below $62.72

Whilst spread trading on S&P 500 shares you trade in £x per cent. So, if you decided to invest £3 per cent and the Joy Global share price moves $0.34 then that would be a difference to your profits (or losses) of £102. £3 per cent x $0.34 = £102.

Note that you are also able to trade this market in Euros or Dollars, e.g. $x per cent.

Rolling Daily Shares Markets

Be aware that this is a Rolling Daily Market and so there is no settlement date for this market. You do not have to close your position, should it still be open at the end of the trading day, it will roll over to the next session.

If you do let your position roll over into the next day and are spread betting on the market to:

  Joy Global Trading Example Increase - then you are usually charged a small overnight financing fee, or
  Joy Global Trading Example Decrease - then a small payment is normally credited to your account

Joy Global Rolling Daily - US Equities Trading Example

If you continue with the spread of $62.72 - $62.82 and make the assumptions:
  • You've done your research into the company, and
  • You think the Joy Global share price is likely to rise above $62.82
Then you may buy a spread bet at $62.82 and invest, for the sake of argument, £3 per cent.

With such a bet you win £3 for every cent that the Joy Global shares go higher than $62.82. On the other hand, you will make a loss of £3 for every cent that the Joy Global market decreases below $62.82.

Looked at another way, if you were to ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your profit/loss is found by taking the difference between the closing price of the market and the price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that difference in price by the stake.

Therefore, if after a few days the share price started to increase then you might want to close your position to lock in your profit. Therefore, if the market moved up then the spread, set by the spread trading firm, might move up to $63.26 - $63.36. To settle/close your trade you would sell at $63.26. So, with the same £3 stake your profit would come to:

Profit = (Closing Price - Opening Price) x stake
Profit = ($63.26 - $62.82) x £3 per cent stake
Profit = $0.44 x £3 per cent stake
Profit = 44¢ x £3 per cent stake
Profit = £132 profit

Speculating on equities, whether by spread trading or otherwise, is not easy. In this example, you wanted the share price to rise. Of course, the share price can also decrease.

If the Joy Global stock had started to drop then you might decide to settle/close your trade to stop any further losses.

If the market dropped to $62.32 - $62.42 then you would close your spread bet by selling at $62.32. This would result in a loss of:

Loss = (Closing Price - Opening Price) x stake
Loss = ($62.32 - $62.82) x £3 per cent stake
Loss = -$0.50 x £3 per cent stake
Loss = -50¢ x £3 per cent stake
Loss = -£150 loss

Note - Joy Global Rolling Daily market correct as of 06-Feb-13.
