How to Spread Bet on US Shares - Johnson & Johnson Rolling Daily
Should an investor want to invest in US companies like Johnson & Johnson then one solution could be spread trading on the Johnson & Johnson share price.
If an investor was to look at the Financial Spreads site, they are currently showing the Johnson & Johnson Rolling Daily market at $59.26 - $59.33. Therefore, an investor could spread bet on the Johnson & Johnson share price:
- Increasing higher than $59.33, or
- Decreasing lower than $59.26
When financial spread betting on S&P 500 equities you trade in £x per cent. As a result, if you decided to invest £2 per cent and the Johnson & Johnson share price changes by $0.05 then that would be a difference to your profits of £10. £2 per cent x $0.05 = £10.

Rolling Daily Equities Markets
One important thing to note is that this is a 'Rolling Daily Market' and therefore unlike a futures market, there is no closing date. As a result, if your trade is still open at the end of the trading day, it will stay open and roll over into the next day.
If you do let your position roll over into the next day and are spread betting on the market to:
- Move up - then you will be charged a small overnight financing fee, or
- Move down - then you will often receive a small payment to your account

Johnson & Johnson Rolling Daily - US Equities Trading Example
If you think about the above spread of $59.26 - $59.33 and make the assumptions that:
- you have done your analysis of the markets, and
- it leads you to feel that the Johnson & Johnson shares will move above $59.33
then you might decide that you are going to go long of the market at $59.33 and risk, let’s say, £1 per cent.
So, you win £1 for every cent that the Johnson & Johnson shares push higher than $59.33. However, such a bet also means that you will lose £1 for every cent that the Johnson & Johnson market decreases lower than $59.33.
Considering this from another angle, if you ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your profits are worked out by taking the difference between the settlement price of the market and the price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that difference in price by your stake.
As a result, if after a few days the stock rose then you might consider closing your trade to secure your profit.
So if the market moved up then the spread might change to $60.52 - $60.59. To settle/close your trade you would sell at $60.52. So, with the same £1 stake you would make:
Your profits (or losses) = (Settlement Price - Opening Price) x stake
Your profits (or losses) = ($60.52 - $59.33) x £1 per cent stake
Your profits (or losses) = $1.19 x £1 per cent stake
Your profits (or losses) = 119¢ x £1 per cent stake
Your profits (or losses) = £119 profit
Financial spread betting on shares can go against you. In this case, you wanted the share price to increase. Naturally, the share price can also decrease.
If the Johnson & Johnson shares had fallen then you could close your position in order to restrict your losses.
If the market fell to $58.00 - $58.07 then you would settle your position by selling at $58.00. Therefore, you would make a loss of:
Your profits (or losses) = (Settlement Price - Opening Price) x stake
Your profits (or losses) = ($58.00 - $59.33) x £1 per cent stake
Your profits (or losses) = -$1.33 x £1 per cent stake
Your profits (or losses) = -133¢ x £1 per cent stake
Your profits (or losses) = -£133 loss
