How to Spread Bet on Indices - Irish Stock Market Rolling Daily
As with many of the world's markets, you are able to spread bet on indices, like the Irish Stock Market, to either increase or decrease.
If an investor was to look at the Capital Spreads spread betting site, they are giving the Irish Stock Market Rolling Daily market at 2683 - 2689. As a result, you can spread trade on the Irish Stock Market index:
- Rising higher than 2689, or
- Falling lower than 2683
When spread betting on the Irish Stock Market index you trade in £x per point. So, if you invested £6 per point and the Irish Stock Market moves 5 points then there would be a difference to your profit/loss of £30. £6 per point x 5 points = £30.
Rolling Daily Indices Markets
One thing to note is that this is a Rolling Daily Market which means that unlike a normal spread betting futures market, there is no settlement date. If your position is still open at the end of the day, it will just roll over into the next day.
If you do roll over a bet and you are spread betting that the market will:
- Go up - then you are normally charged a small financing fee, or
- Go down - then a small payment is often credited to your account

Irish Stock Market Rolling Daily Index Spread Betting Example
Now, if you consider the above spread of 2683 - 2689 and assume:
- you have done your analysis of the stock markets, and
- you feel that the Irish Stock Market index will rise higher than 2689
then you may choose to buy a spread bet at 2689 and risk, for example, £3 per point.
This means that you make a profit of £3 for every point that the Irish Stock Market index rises above 2689. Nevertheless, you will make a loss of £3 for every point that the Irish Stock Market market moves lower than 2689.
Put another way, if you were to buy a spread bet then your profit/loss is worked out by taking the difference between the closing price of the market and the price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that price difference by the stake.
As a result, if after a few hours the stock market rose then you might want to close your position to lock in your profit.
So if the market increased then the spread, determined by the spread betting firm, could change to 2721 - 2727. To close your trade you would sell at 2721. Therefore, with the same £3 stake this trade would make you a profit of:
Your P&L = (Closing Value - Initial Value) x stake
Your P&L = (2721 - 2689) x £3 per point stake
Your P&L = 32 x £3 per point stake
Your P&L = £96 profit
Trading indices, whether by spread betting or not, won't always go to plan. In the above example, you wanted the index to rise. Of course, the index could fall.
If the Irish Stock Market market had fallen then you might decide to close/settle your position in order to limit your losses.
So if the market dropped to 2654 - 2660 then you would settle your trade by selling at 2654. That would mean you would lose:
Your P&L = (Closing Value - Initial Value) x stake
Your P&L = (2654 - 2689) x £3 per point stake
Your P&L = -35 x £3 per point stake
Your P&L = -£105 loss
