Trading Features / Strategies from Simon Denham of Capital Spreads.
Reasons to be cheerful, part one (for those of you who remember the old Ian Dury number) it is always nice to be able to reflect that there must be some good news out there somewhere and the current round of turmoil across the landscape is building strong opportunities for those with the funds to wait for the choice pickings that bear markets always throw up.
Unfortunately the only joy to be had at the moment is a bit of schadenfreude on the woes of the banking and estate agency sector. Unfortunately (again) if these two favourite hate figures are doing badly it generally means that everyone else had better watch out as well.
We are now in a kind of limbo as we await, with a sort a masochistic expectation, evidence of employment weakness, repossession increases, house price slumps and a swelling public sector deficit. To top it all off, and against all common sense in a weakening economy, an inflationary bubble and possible interest rate hikes.

Many years ago I was reliably informed that, aside from utilities, the best performing sectors in a recession were brewing, gambling and prostitution. The first seems to be being brought home in the only takeover interest of note for some time with the $46bn bid for Anheuser-Busch. The second is evidenced by the continued strong performance of most of the major gaming companies like 888 and the third is rather more difficult to quantify without some in depth field work.
With time to do nothing it seems that a large enough percentage of the population reverts back to the old vices of drink, gambling and fornication. Enough to make a reasonable impact on the numbers. It is, of course, rather difficult to ‘invest’ in prostitution (I suppose you could become a pimp or madame) but the other two have innumerable quoted companies to interest a speculative punt or two and at least it makes an interesting change from buying into ‘tediously boring water company’ plc.
