How to Spread Bet on Equities - Interserve Shares?
Currently, the Interserve (December) market is 245.7p - 247.2p with CapitalSpreads. This market expires on 15-Dec-09.
Like many financial markets, you can financial spread bet on the future price of shares, like Interserve shares, increasing or decreasing.
This means you can online spread trade on Interserve shares settling:
- Above 247.2p, or
- Below 245.7p
On the expiry date for this market, 15-Dec-09.
When you spread bet on UK shares you trade in £x per penny, where a penny is 1p of Interserve share price movement.
As an example, if your stake was £6 per penny and the Interserve shares move 8p then that would be a £48 difference to your P&L.
Spread Betting Example - Interserve
If we consider the spread of 245.7p - 247.2p and assume that you like the price and believe that the Interserve shares will close above 247.2p on 15-Dec-09, then:
You might buy at 247.2p for a stake of, let's say, £3 per penny.
If you 'Buy' a spread bet your profit and loss is worked out by taking the difference between the closing price of the market and the opening price and then multiplying that difference by the stake per penny of share price movement.
If, on the closing date, the market has a settlement value of 275p, then:
Profit = (Closing Price - Opening Price) x stake
Profit = (275.0p - 247.2p) x £3 per penny stake
Profit = 27.8p x £3 stake
Profit = £83.40 profit
Spread betting on shares is not always straightforward. If the trade didn't work as expected, with the Interserve stock going down and the market closing at a lower than expected price of 220p, then you would have lost on this spread trade.
Loss = (Closing Price - Opening Price) x stake
Loss = (220.0p - 247.2p) x £3 per penny stake
Loss = -27.2p x £3 stake
Loss = -£81.60 loss
