How to Spread Bet on Inmarsat? |
If an investor decides to speculate on UK listed companies such as Inmarsat then one possibility could be spread trading on the Inmarsat share price.
Looking at a spread betting site like Capital Spreads, we can see that they are pricing the Inmarsat Rolling Daily market at 569.2p - 571.3p. As a result, an investor can spread trade on the Inmarsat shares:
Going above 571.3p, or
Going below 569.2p
When spread betting on FTSE 350 equities you trade in £x per penny. So, should you decide to risk £4 per penny and the Inmarsat shares move 34p then that would change your profit/loss by £136. £4 per penny x 34p = £136.
Rolling Daily Shares Markets
Be aware that this is a Rolling Daily Market and so in contrast with futures markets, there is no settlement date. You do not have to close your position, should it still be open at the end of the trading day, it simply rolls over to the next trading day.
If you allow your bet to roll over and are spread betting on the market to:
Increase - then you would normally pay a small financing fee, or
Decrease - then you'll usually receive a small credit to your account
For a more detailed example see Rolling Daily Spread Betting.
Inmarsat Rolling Daily - Equities Spread Trading Example |
Now, if we take the above spread of 569.2p - 571.3p and assume:
- You've analysed the stock market, and
- You feel that the Inmarsat share price is likely to rise higher than 571.3p
Then you might decide that you are going to buy at 571.3p and invest £5 per penny.
With such a bet you make a profit of £5 for every penny that the Inmarsat shares move above 571.3p. However, it also means that you will lose £5 for every penny that the Inmarsat market moves below 571.3p.
Thinking of this in a slightly different way, if you ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your profits (or losses) are calculated by taking the difference between the final price of the market and the price you bought the market at. You then multiply that price difference by your stake.
If after a few hours the share price started to rise you might decide to close your spread bet in order to guarantee your profit.
As an example, should the market rise, the spread might change to 589.6p - 591.7p. In order to close/settle your position you would sell at 589.6p. So, with the same £5 stake your profit would be:
Profit / loss = (Closing Value - Opening Value) x stake
Profit / loss = (589.6p - 571.3p) x £5 per penny stake
Profit / loss = 18.3p x £5 per penny stake
Profit / loss = £91.50 profit
Spread betting can work against you. In this example, you had bet that the share price would go up. Nevertheless, it could decrease.
If the Inmarsat stock began to fall then you might decide to settle/close your trade to limit your losses.
If the spread dropped to 550.2p - 552.3p you would settle your spread bet by selling at 550.2p. Accordingly, your loss would be:
Profit / loss = (Closing Value - Opening Value) x stake
Profit / loss = (550.2p - 571.3p) x £5 per penny stake
Profit / loss = -21.1p x £5 per penny stake
Profit / loss = -£105.50 loss
Note: Inmarsat Rolling Daily market accurate as of 31-Oct-12.
