Spread Betting on Indices, 26 Sep 08
Dealers are likely to take their chances when they can over the next few days as taking long term positions just now is not exactly a sane prognosis. Clients who bought in yesterday will now walk in to a sizable loss this morning as the FTSE 100 is called 65 points off and the banking sector is likely to take it on the chin once again.
The FTSE is looking to open at around 5135 and investors will be hoping that there is no follow through to attack the 5050 support. In reality we are likely to see low volumes causing volatile moves as liquidity on the Futures exchange dries up in advance of the weekend. With the discussions in Washington on a knife edge it would take either a brave or a foolhardy trader to go into the close with a significant open risk on board.

The markets continue to bounce around in quite a contained area with the Dow hammering at the 10750 level several times in yesterday’s session before a last minute (and I mean last minute) surge took us back up to 10850 at the close. This is building a nice support below 10800 and our clients have been quick to take note buying on every breach of this level yesterday and taking quick profits up in the mid 10800’s. The FTSE is expected to open almost unchanged on yesterday’s close almost bang on 5100 as investors try to come to a conclusion about equity value in such a grim scenario. If the rescue package over in the States is seen as a success then markets will probably bounce sharply and anyone who did not get in on current values will hit themselves for not having bought in but if the opposite becomes apparent what we have seen so far might be just seen as a sort of starter course before the disasters of the main dish.
As mentioned many times it is advisable to keep your powder dry in the current situation, the odd punt here and there but, in the main, sit out the turmoil and await events.

Spread Betting on Indices, 24 Sep 08
The markets this morning are reacting to the overnight news that Goldman’s have accepted a big cash injection to bolster reserves. The FTSE which had been called at around 5075 at 2100 last night is now looking to open slightly higher at around 5150 and the Dax futures are trading at a cash equivalent of 6090 up 20 points.

Markets this morning are a little fractured after the big dump off last night in the US. The FTSE 100 is called some 45 points lower at just below 5200 with the Dax trading at a similar reduction at 6065. The huge rally in the FTSE ran out of steam at pretty much the precise same point as the lows of the fall earlier in March (5414). The worry for technical traders is that this might now be seen as a restrictive top for moves higher in the future. The region from 5400 to 5550 has proved pretty difficult to either break down or up over the past four years and it is difficult to see why this should alter now. Likewise the low during the evening session on Thursday in the FTSE recording a print just above 4800 is also mirror by resistance and support back in late 2004 / early 05.
Best guess at the moment is that we might oscillate in this range for the time being.

Spread Betting on Indices, 19 Sep 08
Capital Spreads Clients had what will probably turn out to be the best day ever yesterday as they stuck grimly to long positions through the thick of the sell off in European trading session to emerge butterfly like into the bright evening session as the FSA announced the shorting ban and the central banks added some $240bn liquidity to desperate banks. The ensuing rally was something to see. The Dow is now over 700 points higher than the lows at six yesterday evening which means that we are back where we were at the start of the week. Anyone nursing a short position will have been blown away and on the open of the FTSE this morning we are looking at an almost 300 point rally to open at around 5160. Banking stock is likely to be the big gainers but traders will find it difficult to take advantage of it as only those with positions over night will be able to do anything.

Today the FTSE 100 is likely to open pretty much unchanged on the close last night at around 4910 which is actually pretty good going as the Dow 30 slumped in late trade to close down 450, the Nikkei 225 is currently 400 points off and the Hang Seng an almost eye watering 7.5% lower at 16336. Down 1300 points.
Lloyds’ purchase of HBOS for 232p seems to be calming investors in pre-market activity but there will be questions to be asked about who was handling security over the talks between the two companies. The City was left watching the BBC for updates which breaches just about every rule in the book about release of market sensitive news. The beeb, a source of remarkably accurate data, appeared to have a man right at the heart of the action and, given that the deal appears to have been brokered by Politicians, we can quickly speculate about where the leaked information was coming from. Rules do not, of course, apply to governments.

The FTSE 100 is likely to open some 60 points or higher but the creeping hand of state influence is gaining power across the western world and with regulators sharpening their knives across a swathe of industries and credit becoming ever harder to come by this is still a market to sit on your hands and conserve your capital.
HBOS might well be ok but we understand that they were being forced to pay up to 8% for funds yesterday which gives an indication as to the risk premium counterparties are demanding to lend and investors are mindful that exactly the same things were being said about Bradford & Bingley and Alliance & Leicester before their share prices imploded.
Punters are busily buying into the indices this morning looking to see whether the last soap opera over the pond is really the end of the worse but it must be pointed out that if this is the worst economic crisis since the thirties then stock markets do not really seem to have noticed. Most Western indices are down just 20 to 25% from their peaks which for a bear market is not exactly terrible.

Spread Betting on Indices, 16 Sep 08
This morning sees the FTSE called over a 100 points lower at around the 5100 level and in early pre market action we have already tested the 5065 low of July. Investors will be hoping that the bounce from this level will support the view that a low has been reached but, in truth, the sensible thing for traders to do in the current scenario is to baton down the hatches, conserve your cash, and wait for the winds to die down. Many shares look extremely good value at current prices but I am sure that investors in Northern Rock, Merrill, Lehman and Bear Sterns thought the same thing just before they failed.
