After a day where the financial spread trading markets rallied on the back of Irish bailout hopes, today investors are left wondering what’s actually going to happen.
All week we’ve been discussing and debating the prospect of aid for the beleaguered Irish state and still we’re kept waiting.
The little that we do know is that the rescue package will only come in the form of loans as opposed to an outright bailout, loans which they have been claiming they do not need. The concern this morning is that such a package is a little half baked and it won’t solve the underlying structural problems that Ireland faces.
So the FTSE has given up half of the gains it made yesterday as the focus is once again on China and their interest rate policy. With inflation in the world’s fastest growing economy starting to get out of hand, further rate hikes are imminent and as a result that’s taking the shine off many London stocks.
The rally since July looks to be having a bit of a break and from a technical standpoint many indices looked to have formed a double top, failing to convincingly break through their 2010 highs.
The trend however remains with an upward bias and the bulls also have the seasonal factor in their favour. Resistance is seen at the recent high around 5900 and if we get above there 6000 could offer up quite a challenge. To the downside there should still be plenty of support for the market around 5650 and then 5550.
This time of year and in particular going into next week is historically a bullish time for equity spread betting markets. With little in the way of any major economic data releases due out today we look to next week. This may be muted by the US holidays for Thanksgiving, although there is a raft of GDP number before then that will give us plenty to think about.
The run up to Thanksgiving in the past has seen lots of bullish sentiment and US markets usually rally into their holiday period with retail stocks being the pick of the bunch. Of course this doesn’t guarantee that this year will be the same.

The financial spread betting markets are having a minor relief bounce as we near a bailout for Ireland, but for some reason there’s a feeling that recent retracement has a bit further to go. Quite a bit has been wiped off the value of some shares in the last few days, in particular mining stocks.
It isn’t just the prospect of European sovereign default that’s spooked the markets, but also the world’s fastest growing economy, China, reigning in lending and raising interest rates.
Some Asian markets have seen a correction of nearly 10% since the November highs were set. Not the Japanese Nikkei though, which defied bears last night by bursting through the 10000 level to hit a 5 month high. The recent Dollar strength has finally given the Japanese index something to smile about, however it’s still a hefty 13% off its 2010 highs.
So for now the FTSE has bounced off support around the 5650 area just as it did in the latter part of October. This level also happens to coincide with the 23.60% Fibonacci retracement level of the July low to the November high so many technical analysts will be getting excited that this is a bounce off a technical level rather than market relief over an imminent Irish decision.

The uncertainty over the Ireland situation continues to rock the spread betting markets so this morning sellers are in control of proceedings.
The recent sell off has mostly been the riskier stocks such as miners and energy which have suffered from a big retracement in commodity prices. However, this morning it is the turn of the more defensive stocks to feel the brunt of the bearish mood that’s hanging over the markets.
The likes of telecom and utility stocks are dominating the top losers. At least broadly though, the FTSE is just about holding its own.
Until the Irish situation is properly resolved the markets will suffer. Despite their continued claims that they have sufficient funding well into next year investors think otherwise.
After comments from Merkel and Sarkozy that investors should also bear the brunt of any default, all of a sudden no one wants to lend to them and their yields have sky rocketed.
To say Germany and France have put their size 10s firmly in it would be an understatement. If this continues then Ireland will be forced to accept a bailout and then it’ll be Portugal, with the real threat of the whole Eurozone imploding if the contagion spreads to Spain.
European finance ministers of course want to avoid such a thing, however there are two camps with the UK being firmly in the no EU package one and wanting to limit any bailout to members of the Euro.
The big fall yesterday pushed the FTSE below the 20 and 50 day moving averages. In August a similar decline was met with a relief rally before further falls, but often you can see a move such as this followed by another move in the same direction.
As mentioned in the past, for the gradual grind higher there’s been little natural support to the downside, so key levels are now 5550 and below there at 5430.

The sell off late in the US session can be said to be to blame for today’s negative mood and lower prices.
The market is fully aware that a default in Europe is highly likely, so prices will continue to struggle to the upside unless the European finance ministers can agree on how to deal with PIGS.
But we haven’t seen the sort of stock market correction that we saw back in April when the first round of bailouts occurred. The Euro has sold off and taken its fair brunt of the selling, but equity markets have remained relatively strong and near their highs.
From a technical standpoint there is a danger that some indices, i.e. the S&P 500, Dow and FTSE 100, are forming a double top which is often a bearish signal, however we’d have to see further weakness for this to be confirmed.
A break below key uptrend lines could be ominous and for the FTSE that is the 5550 area. Below here is support around 5430 but until 5550 is broken to the downside we can’t say that this uptrend is over yet.
So as European finance ministers meet in Brussels to discuss what to do with Ireland and Portugal, and possibly Spain if it comes to it, there’ll be a huge split in the discussions. This will come between those who want to see investors take the brunt of any default without a new bailout and those who do want to see another bailout.
It’s incredible to think that only a few months ago the woes of European sovereign debt were thought to have been resolved with the massive EU and IMF bailout, but only a few months down the line the issue has reared its ugly head once again.
With Portugal calling for emergency funding there’s no question that the EU will also have to provide a similar deal for Ireland and so the vicious circle will continue to go round and round. There’s a lot to suggest that in a year’s time we’ll be in the same situation as we are now.
The markets are weaker but hardly in free fall. The German Dax remains firmly in its upward trend just beneath its 2010 highs and the FTSE hasn’t even tested its 50 day moving average yet.

Markets are starting off on the back foot once again as the woes of Europe rear their head once more.
The FTSE is also softer in early trade. Now around the 5750 level, this dip from the highs has a slightly more ominous feel about it.
Whilst the rally from the July lows has had its fair few sell-offs which were short lived, this time round a possible European default is that much closer and that much more likely. That’s not a recipe of good prospects for the New Year so investors are reflecting on what 2011 might hold and it doesn’t look like plain sailing.
The market’s uptrend is still in tact though and there are plenty of bulls out there who’ll see this as a buying opportunity, but no one’s willing to jump in just yet in case things get a little cheaper.
Over the medium term there isn’t all that much support until 5620 and then 5430, but in the near term the spike lower on Friday around 5725 should keep the bulls happy.

It appears that the markets have caught a nasty dose overnight.
The rumblings over in the G20 and the resurgence in problems over sovereign debt seem to be ‘suddenly’ worrying the markets.
Unfortunately it is not certain how far this might go or whether the cash equity market will actually open this morning and say “what’s the problem” and take us straight back up to yesterday’s close.
The FTSE is being called some 75 points off at 5740 as I write but given that the fall out seems to have only come out in the last hour, after most of the Asian markets have closed, dealers will be concerned about getting sucked into a ‘spike’ lower.
This said we have seen a bit of tiredness up in the high 5800’s as traders have failed on four days in a row to hold prices above 5890.
The previous year high at 5840 back in April will also have weighed on investors minds as the same conflux of events occurred back then to take us lower. This came in the form of sovereign debt worries, weakness in the western currencies, a surge in oil up to high $80’s and so on.
We obviously are not expecting a repeat performance but bulls should be reminded that the equity markets slumped 15% back then. Caution and stop losses remain worthwhile weapons in your trading armoury.
All bull moves will naturally run into profit taking periods, the problem is trying to spot a pull back from an overall market reversal. Dealers are unlikely to worry just yet as we appear to be reacting to isolated factors which are just causing a bit of caution. In fact most equity markets have a very large buffer before they will concern the technical traders.
The FTSE on a trend basis is still in a bull trend even if we fall to almost 5500, another 240 points lower. Near term support in the FTSE is at 5730/35 and more solidly at 5665/70. Resistance is a bit more problematic as we have fallen rather suddenly but 5775/80 and 5800 look to be the early barriers to a quick recovery.

The financial spread betting markets are attempting to claw back some of yesterday’s losses but without much success.
The FTSE is really only just in the black because mining stocks are being driven higher on the back of good economic data from China and rallying share prices in the Australian session.
Looking at this data it’s no wonder that China is the power house of global growth at the moment. Retail sales rose a whopping 18.6% in the past year, industrial production a staggering 16.1% in the year to date.
The jobs market continues to expand steadily both in urban and rural areas so this new found wealth is being happily spent on consumer items, even if property prices are coming a little unstuck.
This growth is verging on insatiable and the concern now for China is that prices are getting out of control. Inflation came in much higher than expected and only recently the Bank of China surprised the markets by raising interest rates, so there’s every possibility they’ll do it again.
That’s why this morning we have energy and mining stocks enjoying the good times, but the broader market just struggling to keep up with them.
The earlier gains for the FTSE were very short lived as there’s still no good news to cover up the bad stuff.
This week has been dominated by the demise of Ireland who is rapidly going the way of Greece. They’re on the slippery slope now and as investors try to claw their money back their cost of borrowing gets higher and higher.

Before the BoE Quarterly Inflation Report was released the FTSE spread betting market was treading water and now it’s out there’s been little in it to really move the market.
A sell off late on in the US session has also meant that we haven’t been able to break through to new two year highs despite some good news from the IMF who have maintained their growth forecasts for the UK.
The FTSE is just starting to drift lower and for now the QE2 rally has come to an end and investors are looking for other good news to keep the momentum of this upward trend going.
This is also quite hard to come by now as China looks to be cooling off a little and there are still underlying concerns over sovereign debt defaults.
Ireland in particular is almost at the point of no return in terms of defaulting and the government must be ruing the decision they made to guarantee bank deposits.

A quiet start to the week after all the mayhem of the previous week and understandably the markets are taking a breather this morning.
Friday’s Non Farm Payroll number was welcomed by the market but we couldn’t push all that much higher as the week had already seen healthy gains of some 3%.
There is also a significant absence of economic data releases today and things don’t pick up too much in the week either. As a result, we may simply drift sideways to a little lower as investors bank some good profits from the rally over recent weeks.
The highlight for UK investors this week will be Wednesday’s quarterly Inflation Report from the BoE which should provide some indication as to the likelihood of any further QE in the New Year.
With equity markets so quiet this morning there’s little to report for the FTSE spread betting market apart from support and resistance levels. Having broken through the resistance of 5780-90, and also taken out the 2010 highs, bulls are looking eying up 5960 and the major 6000 level before year end.
To the downside, support is now the previous resistance around 5780-90 and below there the 5730 and more medium term 5430 should hold up any sharp moves lower.
