Spread Betting on Indices, 20 Nov 2009
The Nikkei has lost some 3.5% this week and other Asian indices have been weak. The German Dax has still failed to mark new 2009 highs lagging both the FTSE and Dow.
For now though the FTSE seems content with sitting on its hands and drifting sideways around the 5300 level.
Spread Betting on Indices, 19 Nov 2009
Dealers are selling the major indices this morning, not surprisingly given that the upside remains problematic, but the effort to force markets lower seems to be to be very high.
The trading ranges of the last few days in the FTSE have been constrained in the extreme, 40 points covering two days of trading, and early activity has already managed to breach the lows of the last two sessions at 5330.
Support in the FTSE is at 5305 and 5250 with resistance at the aforementioned 5330 and above here at 5375 and 5400.
For the Dow and S&P the failure to make headway on the rallies of last week may also begin to weigh on investors and profit taking, as mentioned earlier this week, may become the order of the day.
The German Dax has also struggled to head into new territory and on the daily chart a double top looks to be forming, which is often followed by a correction to the downside.
Asian markets also seem to be lagging the other main indices so for now the rallies across most asset classes seems to have come to a standstill. The usual end of year rally may have just commenced a little prematurely.

This morning the market remains undecided as to whether Monday’s move higher was a legitimate breach of resistance on renewed buyer volume or simply a bear squeeze.
As mentioned already this week there has been a build up of sellers below the 5300 level and so many of their buy stop orders could have contributed largely to the move higher on Monday, so after yesterday’s small decline we now find ourselves in a state of flux pondering what the next move should be.
A small recovery from the lows by Asian indices overnight meant our FTSE quote recovered from overnight loses as we were calling the market to open lower at around 3am this morning.
However, at the time of writing we are some 15 points on the side of the angels and looking like we may have a go at the very near term resistance on 5370 which will have to be overcome before we can have another test of 5400.
Clients opposed last night’s move higher in the Dow and are overall bearish and at the moment which looks like the right call as the US futures have retreated from their highs and we are currently calling the Dow to open 20 points lower at 10418.

Markets surged yesterday rather confirming our impression in the morning statement that too many people were getting short and that there was a danger of a bear squeeze.
The FTSE peaked at just shy of 5400 not quite reaching our resistance level of 5415 but managing to bash through the 5365-5380 range. This morning sees us slipping back through this level and the FTSE is called off 20 points at around 5362.
If we do not regain the highs in early action there is a reasonable chance that some profit taking will emerge from the wings.
The one fly in the ointment over the FTSE and US rally has been the failure of the European indices to break into new highs. The Cac, Dax and Euro Stoxx all remain below Octobers highs, although not by much, and it must pointed out that the upside for the UK and US will remain uncertain so long as this state of affaires remains.

The FTSE and Dow indices have managed to break to new highs, although the S&P is still just under the highs of October and earlier this month, and the Dax, suffering from the strong Euro, is 150 points from the peaks of last month.
This morning sees the FTSE up at 5350 and, in truth, looking quite comfortable with the new highs. The ‘big beasts’ in the FTSE 100 are of course not exactly descriptive of the UK economy with most of their revenue earned far from these shores so the performance cannot be too closely allied.
But the FTSE 250, a much more UK based unit, has actually shown the senior index a clean pair of heels this year. The 250 is up over 45% on the year to date versus ‘just’ 20% for the 100 index.
The low interest rate conditions seem to be assisting the large/medium sized companies rather than the giants. Of course, the large preponderance of mining/oil in the 250 has not harmed it either.
Our clients, who have been selling from about the 5250 level, seem happy to hold onto their shorts and we are seeing increasing selling as the move higher holds steady.
If this scenario is being mirrored across the dealing rooms of the city there is a good chance that we might see a spike higher as shorts get pressured to cover their positions. So clients should be cautious of getting too bearish up at these highs.
Having said this, resistance is just above the current levels at 5365-5380 then at 5415. There is very heavy volume resistance from last year all the way from 5300 up to 5550 and 5650 which may well prove a bit of a barrier to any further advancement.
On the downside, there is obviously support at 5300 but there is also a target of 5150 from a gap in the futures market created on the weekend of the 7th/8th of this month. Markets tend to hate gaps and have an unnerving ability to close them out.

Spread Betting on Indices, 13 Nov 2009
The FTSE is looking to come in unchanged on the close last night after the US experienced some minor weakness through the afternoon and evening session.
While the FTSE 100 still struggles to make it above 5300 dealers will continue to look to the high 5200’s as a selling opportunity but the signals are now turning inexorably into the green for go range and more and more investors are finally putting a toe in the water.
Having attained the 5300 highs again the FTSE has spent the last four days in a very tight trading range with the lows around 5230 and the highs at 5300. It must be admitted that today is not starting out looking much like changing things either.
The Dow has drifted away from its new highs in the last couple of sessions but encouragingly has shown no signs whatsoever of returning below the old October 10140 highs.
Unfortunately, and there is always a but in any argument, the S&P 500 is not joining in the general jollity and is continually failing to break above, and hold onto, any foothold above 1100.0.
Should we continue to batter away at this level and then have some form of pull back some dealers will start to talk about double top formations.

The FTSE this morning started with some buying right from the open as we were calling it to open a little lower but in early action much of the gain has already been given up.
Yesterday saw the index fail three times at the 5300 level which is not good from a technical point of view and clients have been selling at these levels expecting the market to drift lower once again.
The markets seem to have been trending slowly upwards and upward trend lines have regularly provided support. There was a break lower towards the end of October and we even tested the support offered by the 50 day moving average, but once again the bulls have managed to hold the ascendancy.
For now though, the FTSE is wary of the resistance to the upside and we seem to tracking sideways for the time being.

The FTSE is testing resistance this morning after a good session in Asia and, just when the markets looked a little top heavy, we continue higher and clients continue to sell into the market’s strength.
Failure to sustain these levels will bring the “double top” scenario into play and many technical analysts will be calling for lower prices, but we saw similar price action back in May only for the market to provide pull backs which turned out to be fantastic buying opportunities.
Once again the 50 moving average has offered some support and November has got off to a flying start.
The highlight of today is the BOE Inflation Report and UK unemployment numbers. On the unemployment front the rate is expected to tip the 8.0% mark, up from 7.9% with the number breaking the 2.5m mark.
Unfortunately, equity markets are completely detached from the “real” economy, so as unemployment continues to rise, and is expected to continue rising throughout 2010, it won’t necessarily mean the FTSE won’t continue to rally.

Markets are flirting with all time highs in the UK as the US drags everyone ever higher.
The Dow has pushed above previous peaks but the S&P, FTSE and Dax all remain below the Mid October levels.
As mentioned yesterday, days with little in the way of information have a habit of trading in the direction of the current trend and the grind higher throughout the session rather bore this out.
This morning we are seeing a bit of profit taking in the indices before the equity markets open in earnest and the FTSE whilst called some 10 points higher at 5250 is actually about 20 lower than the 21.00 futures close last night.

FTSE Markets doing their very best to break above the 5200 level this morning after the weekend press revealed that healthy disagreement within the finance ministers looks like preventing yet another raid on the financial sector.
The FTSE is now just shy of 5200 as the last of the bears start to wonder if they have got it wrong and even our clients, who are always nervous of buying at highs, seem to be rather more confident that ‘this time’ we might make a break for it into new territory.
With no data due out today the markets will probably remain buoyant as they tend to follow trend momentum in days with little to go on.
We have a large number of stops just above the 5200 level and, as we cannot be unique in this, we must ask ourselves as the stimulus keeps on going, what’s to stop the markets from continuing their uptrend?
