So the shares spread betting markets head towards the weekend with news that Glencore's float slightly disappointed investors with the shares ending flat on the day.
On the other hand, there was no disappointment across the pond as LinkedIn, the social networking site, floated onto the market with an opening price of $45 a share and managed to close 109% up at $94.25 a share. Not a bad days work.
Although there is a lot of excitement surrounding this new wave of tech/social networking companies, there is a massive worry that we could, at some point, relive the 2000 dot.com bubble burst.
The reason for this is simple; companies such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Groupon, and Twitter have all been valued in the billions, but if their revenues cannot match up to their valuations then they're going to come unstuck eventually.
LinkedIn, for example, have already stated that they will be making a loss this year but, as we've seen, investors couldn't seem to care less.
The FTSE ended the day 32 points to the good, closing at 5955, as technology and commodities stocks took us higher.
Glencore had its conditional trading debut and headed straight to the FTSE 100 listings, only the third time this has ever happened. Trading unconditionally will be available to the public as of next week, and it's likely that a lot of people will want a piece of the action.
It will be decided after the market closes today who will be making way for Glencore, with early speculation that Investec or Invensys could make way.
The spread betting market has opened sprightly this morning, up around 40 points to 5991, and depending on how commodities perform today we could test the 6000 level again.

The late positive sentiment from yesterday has fed through to today’s early session taking the FTSE back into the mid 5900 area. There’s also a degree of optimism coming from the Glencore float and so bulls will continue to target 6000.
However, we’ve seen these rallies in recent days remain short lived as the FTSE continues to stick within its range. Every time we head above 6000 to test the year’s highs the market runs out of momentum as the technical indicators run out of steam.

The late sell off in the FTSE yesterday was worrying from a technical point of view.
The UK spread betting index market was looking strong and healthy half way through the day until it gave everything back and more.
At one point the support levels that have prevented us from heading lower looked dangerously like giving in. However, this morning the FTSE is looking to start with a spring in its step following strength in Asian and commodity markets overnight.
Key levels for the index are seen at 5860, which the FTSE futures traded through straight after the close of the cash yesterday, and 5820, with the longer term support seen around 5600 to 5550. To the upside 5950/70 and the good old 6000 level are all seen as resistance.

So BP’s deal with Rosneft looks to be over and guess what happens, the share price rallies.
Yesterday the stock fell ahead of the announcement and it just goes to show how the smart money always gets out ahead of everyone else.
Once the news hits the wires it’s often then that people take the contrarian view and think, well actually, at these levels there’s value and so far this morning BP has recouped yesterday’s losses and even added a little extra. A classic example of sell the rumour, buy the fact.
But questions are now being asked about the options for BP who are desperate to get exploration deals in the pipeline. The end to the talks now doesn’t mean that there won’t be any new ones going forward, but the fact that they became so shambolic after initially striking the deal before Christmas doesn’t fill investors full of confidence.
The FTSE has made a decent recovery from its lows already this morning having commenced the session below 5900 and now its back above there as UK shares are being assisted by the telecoms sector.
Vodafone’s numbers were better than expected and show just how everyone’s now moving onto smart phones. The world’s largest mobile phone operator, by revenue, has benefited from increased data usage and their global reach makes them well placed to carry on benefiting from their stronghold.
For those loyal shareholders however they’ve still yet to see the share price really rally significantly this year as it finds momentum just dries up around the 180p level.

The week is off to a slow start after weakness in the Asian session overnight has fed through to the rest of Europe.
Japanese data is weighing on sentiment after consumer confidence numbers have come in much worse than expected. The after-effects of the quake are still unfolding and so it comes as no surprise to see Japanese consumers taking a serious knock.
The sell off is by no means serious this morning and the FTSE seems to be finding its usual strength in the support levels around the 5900 area, which it has done on several occasions in the past few weeks.
If further weakness does set in and we break below 5850 then the bears will probably have the upper hand and we could test 5800 and even lower.
The 200 day moving average is just below 5900 so this could provide some support. However, a breach wouldn’t necessarily mean the bull market is over as we saw the FTSE trade below it back in March, following the Japanese earthquake, only for it to bounce back swiftly.
The upward trend line is around the 5750 area, so there are lots of levels that could provide a buying opportunity if they are reached.
It seems like quite a technical outlook to things this morning in the absence of any other meaningful economic data.

The financial spread betting markets are seeing a very small rise on the open today after the recent sell off brings out the bargain hunters.
The question on everyone's lips though is whether the recent sell has presented a decent buying opportunity or if it's a sign of further weakness to come. Contrarian investors will probably see this as the former, however this correction has seen a substantial move lower in commodity markets and so there is cause for concern.
For the time being it looks like this buying opportunity is playing out and so the FTSE is seeing a bit of strength early doors. Bulls will want to see a return back to 6000 to confirm this but for now we're hovering just below here.

Yesterday's session reminded investors of what the financial spread betting markets are up against.
Firstly, in the case of the UK, the Governor of the Bank of England revised down his forecasts for growth and revised up his forecasts for inflation; a lethal concoction from a macro standpoint.
Secondly, throughout the week the Eurozone has been hitting the headlines again for all the wrong reasons. As the outlook for Greece becomes worse and worse, traders have been punishing the single currency, which only a few days ago looked like it was going to hit $1.5000 against the Dollar.
Thirdly, the global growth argument, that's supported this monumental rally since March 2009, looks like being tested to the core and global inflation continues to spiral out of control.
I'm sorry if I sound a little gloomy this morning and I didn't get out of bed on the wrong side, but the news flow in recent days has not been pretty.
This morning sees the gloom continue as the commodities spread betting markets suffered overnight and Asian markets were particularly poor.
Investors are quick to remember the past and as May got underway they've been looking at their candlestick charts and see the "flash crash" of exactly a year earlier. The selling then continued for a good two months and the market retraced some 7%. A similar move would bring us down towards the mid 5600 region.
At the moment there's a bit of fear returning to the market and the more we decline the more palpable it becomes.

Markets are drifting lower after having been called higher as they were expected to continue from where they left off yesterday with further gains albeit mild ones.
The US session ended strongly and Asian markets have seen buying after a raft of Chinese data showed that inflation in the Asian giant's economy has dipped.
Industrial production and retail sales came in slightly lower than expected and the overall rate of inflation was softer.
So there's some relief from spread betting investors this morning as in recent months all we've seen is inflation spiralling out of control and the People's Bank of China taking continual action to try and prevent that.
The FTSE has opened softer than was expected so we’re not getting the lift of some 15 points that we had priced in. The index is just below where it left off yesterday at around 6000 with the ex-dividend stocks erasing what would normally have been a stronger start.
Since we closed back above 6000 yesterday the bulls will be hoping to see a return towards 6075 and possibly even the major resistance around 6100/30. Support over the near term could come in at 5990 and then 5955/30.

Our spread betting account holders have been tentatively buying into the FTSE this morning but not in their usual numbers you’d expect following weakness from the index. The 5900 area remains the key support area meanwhile to the upside 6000 is proving a small hurdle for the bulls, which we saw yesterday.
A little bit of buying has seen the index just push on higher towards 6000, so at the time of writing we’re just below there.

A little bit of Eurozone concern is creeping into the financial spread betting markets this morning so most European indices are lower on the open, but not as bad as we were calling earlier.
There is life in the FTSE yet as the market has taken the Euro worries in its stride. The support around 5900 has prevented the bears from taking control of proceedings and we’re now almost back in positive territory.
The 6000 level is the next near term target with the major resistance at 6100/35 being the biggest hurdle for the bulls at the moment.
The FTSE has been remarkably sluggish so far this year, as its flat when compared to where it was in January, whereas the Dow is up 8% and Dax is up 7%.
Even the FTSE 250 is up over 2% on the year and considering that the FTSE 100 is supposed to represent the global economy more with its heavy weighting in mining and energy stocks there’s something to be a little concerned about.
Either the FTSE is undervalued or the others are overvalued, but when you take into consideration Sterling’s weakness, that’s where your answer is. Investors seem to be shunning UK shares as their returns are being scuppered by the weakness in the currency.
