Index Spreads, 25 Feb 2011

UK shares just seem to be holding onto their own this morning having formed a low yesterday and the odd bulls seems to be re-emerging from the shed to see if they can’t pick up a few bargains.

The only problem is that with the LSE being down this morning, few investors can actually trade so they have to use other exchanges like Chi-X and BATS.

It’s no wonder that the LSE is losing market share and this is not good PR for the firm which is in the papers not only for its merger with TMX but also today for the launch of its new pan-European trading platform.

The industry is consolidating as competition between exchanges becomes fierce and glitches like this do not do our flagship exchange any favours. The hope is that any mergers will swiftly address such technical problems. But don’t hold your breath.

Anyway, the focus for this morning and today is GDP numbers. The UK’s second release for Q4 has just come in at -0.6%, so a revision downwards, just when everyone was hoping that the first release of -0.5% might be revised upwards. This shows that the UK economy is going to have to hard very hard in Q1 of this year in order to avoid a double dip.

This will further cause problems for the MPC who are turning more and more hawkish so for the UK economy’s sake people are hoping the doves will remain in the ascendency in the months ahead.

Earlier this morning we had UK consumer confidence data out which improved only mildly but from an exceptionally low base. Consumers remain down beat after January showed the worst reading of the data on record and it’s at least some relief that the number wasn’t any worse with this week’s turmoil and spike in oil prices.

Later the US releases their second snapshot of GDP which is expected to show a little uptick to 3.3% from 3.2%. Then we end the week with US Michigan confidence, which is also expected to show a little improvement, and would compliment the good consumer confidence numbers on Tuesday.

So the FTSE looks like it wants to go into the weekend on a positive note. This is a brave move considering the continuation of uncertainty across North Africa and the Middle East.

Lloyds Banking Group is back in the black but profits have disappointed due to, yes you guessed it, bad Irish loans. There were glimmers of good news with the UK retail arm being a shinning star. On Chi-X the shares are down some 5% to around 62p.

Index Spreads, 24 Feb 2011

The disruptions and uncertainty throughout North Africa remains rife and European markets are in the red once again.

Already this morning we’ve seen oil spike further with Brent crude almost hitting $120 a barrel.

The FTSE has given up over 3 percent after hitting its high at 6100 on Monday, and that’s on only three trading sessions, so the move to the downside has been sharp and bearish.

Now that the index is below its upward trend line it could be driven even lower towards 5800. As a result, in the near term traders will have their eyes on important levels such as 5920/40 to the upside and 5850 to the downside.

Without any swift resolution to the Libyan situation uncertainty is ravaging global spread betting indices and speculators are piling into oil driving it higher. Investment bank Nomura even called for oil to hit over $200 a barrel if production in Libya and Algeria completely halted.

So the FTSE has been see-sawing around already this morning, having dipped below 5900 and almost hitting 5850, but has just seemed to find a bit of support bouncing back towards 5900.

It’s been difficult to focus on the corporate earnings this week but today has seen our part nationalised bank RBS announcing that they are both back in profit and back with a much better profit that expected.

This is great news for British tax payers who are hoping to see a healthy return on their investment by the time that their stakes in the bank are sold sometime after September. The share price is lower today, hardly surprisingly, but so far this year it has been a superb performer rallying over 40% so far in 2011. However, the headlines will no doubt be filled with the news of excessive bonuses and greedy bankers.

Already German GDP has been released inline with expectations and then later this morning we get EU Confidence numbers. This is followed by the weekly initial jobless claims from the US which are expected to dip a little to 405k bringing the four week average down again. At the same time US durable goods are released and after that new home sales.

Index Spreads, 23 Feb 2011

Well yesterday's session certainly did provide some excitement after the FTSE dropped 100 points and nearly ended the day in positive territory.

Then the US investors bowled in and dragged everyone else higher following their good consumer confidence data, but they couldn't quite recover from their lows in the same fashion as European indices and ended the session quite a bit worse off.

As the problems with Libya continue to rumble on the financial spread betting markets may have to get used to this one lasting a while. The problem with Gaddafi is that he doesn't hold any official office in the country so he isn't in a position to resign or call an election. However, in order for him to go it would seem that he will have to be actively removed as his defiance shows he will not go without a fight.

After yesterday's bounce by the FTSE towards the end of its session the continued weakness from the Dow means we've commenced today in the red and just above the upward trending line around the 5900/20 area.

This morning's calls were lower overnight so bulls are trying to keep the market propped up somewhat but it really feels like they're going against the tide. The markets are now awash with uncertainty and, even though Libya's total oil production only makes up 2% of global output, it's the not knowing where things will lead to and how long they'll go on for that's really rattling investors.

With the crude oil spread trading market having spiked so much in recent weeks this will only compound the inflation problems that the global economy already has to face.

Index Spreads, 22 Feb 2011

As mentioned briefly in yesterday's comment Libya is a slightly different to other countries in the North African and Middle Eastern region in that its leader is the longest ruling and his grip on power over the decades has been in the global spotlight largely for its anti-Western stance.

The ugliness of this uprising of the population is taking its toll on equity markets as there's little to show that Gaddafi will give up without a fight.

The fear is that if this were to rumble on for as long as the Egypt protests then oil could spike to even further than it already has. Yesterday saw $5 in itself.

So the FTSE is under pressure this morning down to the mid 5950 area with this being quite an important support level.

The speed with which the selling is happening is unnerving investors and this could quite easily turn into a panic causing quite a significant downward move as the index has already disregarded support levels.

Further to the downside the major upward trend line just above 5900 is a level the bulls should be looking at very carefully if we get there. No one wants to try and catch a falling knife especially during times of such uncertainty.

US stocks have continued to grind higher in the US which usually makes consumers feel happier so expectations are at least for a small rise in confidence.

Index Spreads, 21 Feb 2011

Well expectations were for a slightly weaker start to trading this morning as the unrest in the Middle East has well and truly spread to Libya. Before the open we were calling the FTSE to open lower by some 20 points.

The protests aren’t just confined to Libya, with Bahrain continuing to see demonstrations. However, the bulls have been quick to dismiss these political tensions as a possible threat to the equity bull market and we’ve recovered to break even very quickly.

But as mentioned European equity markets don’t seem too concerned at the moment and have been lifted by good economic data from Germany and Europe. Both the PMI numbers and the German Ifo business survey have surprised to the upside.

This morning’s little rally has taken us back to the resistance around 6090/6100 with bulls hoping for a pop to the upside through this barrier to pave the way for a test of the +6100 area. The next resistance would then be seen at 6145.

To the downside 6040 and 6000 are the important support areas. The winners and gainers are mixed with no one sector leading the way, although mining stocks which started the day flat to negative have just decided to join the party.

Index Spreads, 18 Feb 2011

The spread betting markets continue to drift almost motionlessly around their highs with little momentum either to the upside or downside. The FTSE is a little weaker but only by a few points as investors seem reluctant to push the index into new territory.

Index Spreads, 17 Feb 2011

The headlines can hardly be described as conducive of higher UK shares prices but the markets continue with their rally unbounded.

The ONS under estimated inflation causing the Bank of England to undershoot with interest rates during the boom times, UK unemployment figures yesterday showed the jobs market is not in good shape and tensions in the Middle East are spreading. Yet the markets continue higher.

It’s no wonder that each time the FTSE nears or makes a new high our spread betting account holders simply oppose the move by selling into the strength, expecting a pull back at some point.

It hasn’t proved to bad a tactic so far this year as the London market is still yet to really take out its highs around the 6090 area, but that’s being put to the test this morning.

This is the near term resistance for the index so a push above here might open up a test of 6140. To the downside, bulls will be hoping that 6050/60 will hold up and then everybody’s favourite level 6000 should act as support if we see a retracement there.

At the time of writing the FTSE spread betting market is trading around 6090 with the futures having just pushed our price for the cash above. At this early stage it’s the banks once again that are contributing to the meagre strength we’re seeing so far this morning.

Last night saw a bit of volatility during the US session as the Dow opened with a spurt higher, then a swift retracement before providing some see-saw action during the release of the FOMC minutes which were really rather bullish. This gave Asian markets a boost over night with the Nikkei 225 hitting a nine month high.

Index Spreads, 16 Feb 2011

The markets were in see-saw mode yesterday with the FTSE oscillating throughout the day. To complement this, the Dow always remained in negative territory but going up a bit, then down a bit and already this morning we're calling the US market to open up 25 points higher.

Worse than expected retail sales in North America were the main cause for the lack of momentum behind US financial spread betting markets which once again did well to not suffer further losses.

This morning the FTSE 100 index is at 6045 so support remains around the 6000/5980 level and the year's high at 6090 is resistance.

Index Spreads, 15 Feb 2011

St Valentine didn't provide a box of chocolates or roses for the UK shares markets yesterday which tracked sideways as investors were distracted by continued social unrest in the Middle East.

In Egypt many demonstrators remain in Tahrir Square and strikes are bringing the country to its knees. In Iran, Yemen and Bahrain there were also protests as a wave of activists started to galvanise across the region.

After having seen two regimes brought down in as many months any escalation of the tensions would cause considerable uncertainties, as well as the ones that are currently gripping Egypt. A domino effect in such as unstable part of the world will not be good for the markets.

So the FTSE is just in the red this morning. There was some slightly disappointing German GDP data earlier that came out at 0.4% when 0.5% was expected, a decline from 0.7%.

So around the 6050 level to the upside resistance is at the year's high of 6090 and then if we get above here the next target is 6140/50. To the downside the 6000/5980 area is quite an important support area.

Index Spreads, 14 Feb 2011

The FTSE has commenced the week on a relatively cautious footing just below its recent highs having made an attempt at getting above the 2011 high at 6091 but falling back.

Signs of political contagion in the Middle East are being watched carefully by investors as Bahrain, Algeria and Yemen continue to see the rumblings of social unrest.
