A little bit of fear ran through the markets yesterday as it suddenly dawned on investors that the free ride the markets have been enjoying could come to an abrupt end in 2010.
Once the tap is turned off then we’re on our own. It’s the sustainability of the recovery that’s in doubt, so for now resistance levels have won the day and the bulls seem to have lost the upper hand.
There are two realities of the rally since March with the first being that it has been driven primarily by low interest rates and the printing of money.
The second is that the rally is a retracement of the stupendous declines from the highs of 2007 to the March low this year.
This retracement has reached some technical levels which are all too well known with the likes of the Dow, S&P and FTSE all failing to mark new highs for 2009.
Since commencing the rally from the lows the market hasn’t really suffered any sort of correction and as we continue to drift sideways the likelihood of a move to the downside increases.
This morning sees the FTSE opening around where it closed last night. In fact it is maybe just in the black and some 30 points above the lows that it hit last night when the price actually dipped below the 5200 level.
Often a big decline like the one we saw yesterday is followed by another decline that tries to shake out the bulls completely, so we’ll see this morning if there’s any continuation of the selling.
Economic data is very thin on the ground today so often in its absence the markets continue their current trend. However, after the recent moves it’s hard to tell whether that’ll be in the direction of the overall uptrend or the recent declines.

The weakness in the Euro has given the Dax a bit of a boost. Whilst the FTSE and US markets struggled to hold onto yesterday’s gains, the Dax had no such problems reaching a new traded high for the year.
This morning the Euro markets have pulled back slightly but it must be said that that they seem, only seem mind you, happier at these levels than the other Western Indices.
Once again the FTSE gave up the ghost in the mid 5300’s reaching around 5340 before selling off.
This region around 5350 has proved rich pickings for our clients as they continue to sell on any attempt at the level.
To date this has been the wise move but traders must beware a break out especially as we approach the year end window dressing season.
We are currently at 5285 with weakness being more apparent but clients will be eying the 5250/60 level which has proved supportive very recently.
Below here 5175 to 5200 is the major price level to watch. Since September this has proved to be either a strong barrier or strong support. When breached, in either direction, it has seen quite large movements only for the markets to eventually drift back to the price.

A serious move to the upside right from the open has caught a few people off guard this morning.
The move has been opposed most of the way up by clients who continue to sell into the strength displayed by the FTSE.
The move has been complimented by other European indices and US futures but with little explanation as to why for now.

Indices are opening unchanged on the off with the FTSE showing signs that today might be a rerun of yesterday’s abysmal trading range.
The Dubai announcement in the small hours of Monday effectively blew the FTSE’s powder whilst it was still asleep. Once the market had actually opened the trading range was covered for the whole day by a miserly 30 points.
Traders will probably be looking to sell above 5350, as they have done successfully in the past, and buy at around 5300 which is the first support level.
The rising trend line for the long term rally is now at approximately 5230 and this rising line has held steady for two attempts last week. Punters are short the indices in general but, admittedly, not aggressively so. It is possible that the pressure from year end redemptions will keep a cap on window dressing buying for the time being.

Overnight we were calling the FTSE to open pretty flat until the Abu Dhabi news came out and we put on some 50 points and now seem to the sitting comfortably above 5300.
The 5325-30 area has provided some near-term resistance and we’ve now broken out of last week’s bearish trend so the next big test will be the 5380 area where we’ve failed on several occasions in the past few weeks.
Ever since the beginning of November we have been consolidating somewhat. This seems similar to the sideways move we saw in May and June before the market took its next leg upwards.
May and June’s consolidation lasted about 8 to 10 weeks so we’re nearing the end of this period if we repeat within a similar time frame.
That could mean an aggressive move in either direction around Christmas or just after. As a result, since it’s that time of year when markets tend to rally, clients have been buying into the FTSE index recently expecting the gains to continue.
In the absence of any major economic data for the rest of the day trading ranges could remain narrow. Nevertheless, things pick up tomorrow with inflationary and unemployment data on Tuesday and retail sales on Thursday before tailing off again at the end of the week.

The FTSE is holding steady in the mid 5200’s and things look good for a quiet year end. The FTSE index seems to be trading in two separate bands of, roughly, 5180 to 5275 and 5285 to 5380.
At the moment we are at the top of the lower band, 5270, and dealers will be hoping that we can push higher today to give the week a reasonable ending.
The Dow and S&P returned to the 10400 and 1100 levels respectively which, as mentioned a few time recently, seem to be exerting an almost gravitational pull.
Markets look very comfortable indeed today and in the absence of any real economic news due out until 15.00 this afternoon the bears may be the ones under pressure in early action.

The markets all had a series of looks at support levels throughout the session yesterday before deciding that the current trading ranges were ok after all.
We spent much of last week looking at the top of the range and this week seems to be turn of the bottom. This follows the series of market activity in place for the last month or so.
Dealers will be watching the supports in the FTSE at around 5165/80 for any breach and, while the supports did all hold yesterday, it must be mentioned that from a technical point of view there is quite a bit riding on the markets staying above 5165.
Volume, price and trend support is all critical at this level and a breach may well see a quick bail-out from some of the shorter term buyers.
The Dow and S&P 500 are still within striking distance of 10400 and 1100 which is where we seemed to have been oscillating around for some time now. But punters, having been keen to pick up long bets on weakness in the past, now seem to be slightly more wary.

This morning sees markets weakening towards yesterdays lows bang on the bottom of the recent trading ranges. Having said that, the supports have not yet been broken in either the Dax, the FTSE or the US markets, although it is a close thing.
The Dax has price support at around 5625 and trend support at 5630 so the opening call at 5650 as I write is flirting with it.
The FTSE has very strong price support between 5170 and 5200 but trend support is considerably lower, underneath 5000.
The weakness in the Pound is proving something of a bolster to the senior index but the FTSE 250 is looking a tad more nervous with long term trend lines rising to 8900 today combining with price support at around the same level.
The close yesterday at 9030 is well away from here but early weakness in the pre market action might make for an attack on this when we open at 08.00.

Markets yet again failed to follow through on moves with the Equity markets almost moribund throughout yesterday’s session.
The FTSE looked to be on the ropes early in the session. However, the selling at the open was quickly quenched as buyers came in to move the markets back up to the 5300 level, where we remain this morning.
This morning sees slight weakness across the board but nothing too alarming. The FTSE is called down about 20 points on the open at 5290 and the Dax and Dow Jones similarly slipping slightly.
We remain well and truly stuck in the middle of the current trading ranges for the indices. The FTSE is continuing to oscillate around 5250 to 5350 with the odd attempt 50 points to either side of this.
The Dax is similarly stuck below 5860 and above 5600 and the S&P and Dow are seemingly wedded to 1100 and 10400 respectively.
Day Traders continue to make hay in the sun as all attempts to break out seem to eventually come to nothing.
