Spread Betting on Indices, 10 Oct 08
My comments yesterday that the rally in the morning session was most likely a bear market bounce fell on deaf ears as our clients continued to buy throughout the day. The huge falls in the indices in late trading demonstrate the lack of confidence coming into the close of business every day. Now that people cannot short a huge swathe of stocks there is not even the buoyancy afforded by potential squeezes on those holding shorts.
Banks are still not lending to each other and the news throughout the night session with the Nikkei and the Far East trading some 10% lower is unlikely to encourage them to do so. There were some tentative rumours that the G8 might be about to guarantee all interbank dealing between their banks but this would be a huge risk and would presumably doom any units outside of the protected umbrella.
Today looks to be starting off as a complete bloodbath. The FTSE 100 is being called an astonishing 300 points lower on the open which will mean a massive 7% off yesterday’s close. The news that GM might be close to administration has sent shivers throughout the world. A company the size of GM has not just hundreds of thousands of employees but, if you look down the supply chain, millions who work for suppliers. Chapter 11 is a technical level of administration but it is difficult to see who would fund the administration in the current environment. The company has been losing billions of dollars every year so who would want to buy it. The motor industry is massively over supplied even in good times. Even if we were in a growth scenario you would struggle to get a bank to lend to a possible purchaser. But now? Absolutely no chance. The US government might come under extreme pressure (having saved all those high flyers on Wall Street) to now come up with the money to prop up an ailing car company. Politicians who glibly talk about ‘Moral Hazard’ might now have their words thrown back at them.

I have been commenting time and again over the last few months that markets have been overvalued for the coming storm and that investors should be sitting on their hands. I am afraid that the advice is still the same now. Whilst I hope that the Government’s bolstering of the financial system will work its magic, I fear that the bear market is not going to loosen its grip just yet. We have had a series of very good bounces from sell offs since the turn of the year in the FTSE 100, no less than six 500 point or more moves higher from the various low points (two of these were 900 and 1000 point rallies) but still we are now 2000 points off the start of the year.
At this moment I would guess that we are going to get the same bear market rally event now and clients have been buying heavily into the fall late last night and the move higher this morning. Clients and readers should be very wary of the current situation though and be prepared to cut out quickly if the momentum starts to move into unfavourable territory.
The FTSE is currently trading 100 points to the good this morning at around 4465 (this could be 50 points wrong by the time I finish) but yesterdays lows saw us pressing on the 2004 support levels at around 4280, we did in fact bash through it for around 5 minutes as Alistair Darling was speaking but as soon as he sat down traders took comfort. It is slightly worrying that the last two times the Chancellor of the Exchequer has got to his feet to make a statement the markets have lost over 100 points in just a few minutes. This does not bode well for the confidence in our lords and masters.

Spread Betting on Indices, 07 Oct 08
With any luck we will have a bit of a relief rally this morning after the US managed to recover from the extreme lows during yesterday’s session. The Dow Jones hit a base of 9518 in the evening session and this morning is being called back over 10000 at something like 10065. I say ‘something like’ because by the time I commit this copy the price will probably be another 100 or 200 points different.
This morning sees the FTSE 100 called some 80 points higher at 4665 still very weak but nowhere near the lows being quoted at 19.30 last night when we hit 4435. The danger is now that we all get caught in a ‘dead cat bounce’ (again) of which we have had two huge ones in the last few weeks (Paulson Plan/short selling ban and the Aftermath of the House of Representatives voting down of the plan).
I would also like to point out that, contrary to popular opinion, short selling bans seem to have had exactly the reverse impact to that expected. With no ability to balance books market makers are now forced into position neutralisation all the time and the effect has been to magnify stock price moves. Since the ban Barclay’s stock has ‘averaged’ a 13.5% trading range every day. The equivalent of 650 points each and every day in the FTSE 100. And this is one of the more stable bank stocks.

Spread Betting on Indices, 03 Oct 08
The late sell off in the FTSE yesterday will not have come as much of a surprise to those who read my comment as the risk of running trading positions through today’s session look not worth taking. Even if the House of Representatives pass the bill (and this time it would be truly stunning if it were rejected) it is not actually clear whether this will actually make much difference. For quite some time most banks will probably try to avoid going to TARP as the admission of weakness might not be taken well by the markets. Anyway, much of the dodgy stuff has been written down already to levels well below fair value as auditors have insisted on ‘Marked to Market’ so Banks will probably not wish to offload to the Government on such unfavourable terms.
The FTSE is opening up about 20 points this morning at just under 4900 and we can expect a quiet morning session as most weakly held positions have already been closed out. The resistance level mentioned in yesterdays comment at 5060 held rather nicely in morning trade and we slipped all the way back to lows around 4860. It is difficult to see these being tested again before the NFP this afternoon and in truth probably not until the aftermath of the vote this evening.
The Dow Jones slipped to test the low range of the past month. The market seems to be building up support between 10400 and 10450 but it would be a brave man to risk too much on this levels holding just yet. We will probably need another failed attempt to start getting excited about a possible platform being put in place.

Spread Betting on Indices, 02 Oct 08
As mentioned the FTSE 100 is due to open unchanged this morning at around 4960 and we can expect some nervous action in the run up to this evenings vote. It is a bit difficult to pick any support or resistance levels at the moment but 4910 to 4890 might be difficult to get through on the way down and 5060 looks like a similarly arduous task to the up side.

Three cheers for the FTSE (and other global indices) which managed to post respectable gains, albeit small ones, after originally being called to open 5% lower. In just a day, over half of the losses incurred on Monday have been recouped. Concern still remains about the overall outlook for the equity market and with a bearish trend still in tact many Technical Analysts are saying that there needs to be a substantial move higher to levels above and beyond targets like 6000 for the bulls to start to get interested again. The equity market is staring into the eye of the storm and that storm could turn really nasty if many big institutions have to readjust their exposure to equities and make big reductions in positions, meaning more selling.
The positive move of yesterday is rubbing off on the FTSE 100 this morning as well and we’re expecting an open of as much as 60 points higher points higher and last night the futures even indicated a move back above the 5000 level.

The markets have taken a pounding these last few days and investors are running for cover. After the rejection by the US House of Representatives of the Treasury’s bail out the Dow Jones saw an all mighty fall in unprecedented scenes recording a 300 point move lower in under 5 minutes. The failure to pass the proposal is another nail in the coffin for banking stocks as Paulson and Bernancke go back to the drawing board, that is, if either of them holds onto their jobs.
With FTSE opening some 200 points lower from where it closed yesterday it will no doubt be yet another roller coaster of a day. Economic data and corporate results are being completely ignored by the frenzy of selling taking place in equity markets. We could be very near the point whereby large pension funds and other institutions (or at least those who have not already sold mass holdings in equities) have to sell substantial portfolios for fear of them losing any more of their value. With the price of precious metals and mining stocks also correcting the selling is broad based with almost all constituents getting hammered.
