The reaction to the QE earlier in the week, and the large rally higher, has fizzled out and mining stocks that were higher in earlier trade are now about flat on the day.
HSBC is driving the banking stocks lower after their warning that emerging market growth is starting to slow.
Such a warning from one of the world’s biggest banks is not being received well by the equity markets as that’s the area that the global economy is relying on to fuel growth over the next couple of years.
Other stocks are suffering from profit taking with Man Group being one of the main decliners after a stellar performance in recent days.
The main event of the day is Non Farm Payroll out at 12:30 London time. We should now get more accurate readings of the data, without distortions from temporary census workers, so the main number is key.
Expectations are for a rise of 60k, but even this is still some way off the 100k required to prevent the unemployment rate in the US from rising further still. The rate has been above 9.5% for the longest period since 1948 and could even tick up to 9.7%.
Even if jobless claims have been showing signs of possible improvement, there’s a long way to go before that rate will start coming down meaningfully.
So for the time being our spread betting account holders are covering themselves ahead of the unemployment data in case of a bad number which could lead to further equity weakness. Now the euphoria of QE is over we can focus on the real fundamentals and state of the economy.
After NFP there’s some pending home sales data from the US as well.

So the market's worst kept secret is out and the Fed go down the route of printing another 600 billion Dollars.
It is not a normal course of action as QE is usually reserved for when an economy is in turmoil, not for an economy that is actually growing and has just recovered from the biggest property and credit bubble bursts of recent times.
By borrowing more to print more the US will feel the effects and pay for this policy in decades to come.
It's no wonder Obama suffered such huge loses in the mid-terms and this last throw of the dice is a desperate attempt to bring unemployment down from its longest consistent run above 9.5% since 1948 in his bid to get re-elected in 2012.
The reputation of the Federal Reserve Chairman is also on the line. To many outsiders it seems reckless to want to reignite a property market that has just seen a crash, especially when the people who buy the properties can't possibly begin to afford the mortgages that the banks won't give them.
As expected the decision caused hysteria within the market and it didn't help that the figures were released beyond the allotted 6.15pm. The Dow whizzed up and down between 100 points a couple of times before finally settling higher.
The volatility was too much for some of our financial spread betting clients and this is a classic example of the dangers of trading over such a crucial figure. For those who enjoyed last night's roller coaster they can hop on the Non Farm Payroll ride tomorrow.
So this morning European markets are swimming in the fresh liquidity of more QE and the FTSE is finally making an attempt at this year's highs.
Mining stocks are having a bumper day as whichever way you look at it, and whatever your view of QE II, it equals a weaker Dollar. As a result, investors are looking elsewhere for their returns, which means emerging markets, which means stronger mining stocks. Therefore, the danger of more bubbles being created increases.
The FTSE is taking on resistance levels and the bears are getting severely squeezed. Could this finally be the breakout from these narrow ranges of the past few weeks? Our spread betting account holders don't seem to think so as they continue to sell into this strength thinking that the 2010 highs will remain in tact.
This seems like a dangerous play since we're now just above these levels and the FTSE 250 has already been forging ahead since the beginning of October. For the time being it looks like the traditional end of year "Santa rally" may have already got underway.

We go up, we go down, we go up. Now guess the next bit.
The trading range of the FTSE over past few weeks has been all of 150 points and so far, for a week that’s supposed to get the market moving in one direction or another, we’ve been rather disappointed.
The results of the US Congressional elections had a muted effect on the financial spread betting markets and the FTSE is just slightly in the red this morning.
Resistance remains the 5800-45 area and if we breach the 2010 highs the bulls will next target the big 6000 level. To the downside 5540 is the major support, but before then we can expect 5630 to provide something.
We are in a generally bullish time of year for equity markets. Both November and December are historically positive for the FTSE and, as we’ve seen in the past three months, any retracements are rather short lived.
The economic data will be a key focus for today’s session and we kick things off with UK PMI services. This is expected to compliment the manufacturing PMI number on Monday with a small rise. The services aspect of the recent GDP data did surprise to the upside, but that doesn’t guarantee we will see strength in today’s number.
Later on from the US we get the ADP employment number, not as big as the Non Farm Payroll, the ISM non-manufacturing data and then of course the FOMC rate announcement which will include the big, or not so big, QE II number.
Estimates range from a few hundred billion Dollars of Treasury security purchases to a whopping trillion. So what we can draw from this is that no one knows, but what you can almost certainly bet on is that volatility is likely to get fierce later on this evening.

China is still playing a major role in the global economy and any data to suggest further growth in the world's fastest growing economy helps the equity spread betting market.
However, anything to suggest it might come off the boil, whether it’s by increasing their banks' capital requirements or raising interest rates, is enough to see weakness in equity markets.
Yesterday was a day that saw a surprise jump in Chinese manufacturing and so markets obliged by rallying, with mining stocks doing particularly well.
The biggest threat to Chinese growth is the bubble bursting. The economy is in danger of experiencing a similar property price bubble to the US, maybe not now, but sometime down the line.
If the rate at which they are building their cities and airports etc suddenly stalls then mining stocks could repeat a similar crash to the one we saw in 2008.
The FTSE is flat to just in the black on the open having fluctuated very little overnight after a moderate Asian session.
Economic data is rather thin on the ground today so the focus is on earnings from some UK heavyweights such as BP, BG, Lloyds and Aviva. BP is the main corporate story of the morning as it announces its return to profit, but the costs of the Mexico spill have mounted. The key question for the long suffering investors is when they'll see a resumption of the dividend, but they shouldn't hold their breath.

This is a big week for the financial markets whichever way you look at it.
Mid-term elections in the US tomorrow, then the FOMC rate announcement, Bank of Japan will follow as well as the Bank of England and European Central Bank. If that wasn’t enough we end the week with US employment data, the data release of all data releases.
The markets are starting the week on a positive bias as manufacturing data from China has given the FTSE a boost. Mining stocks in particular are leading the way and these early gains are quite widespread.
The FTSE still remains apprehensive around the 5800-5700 area and there’s been a lack of any concerted push higher. Volatility could really pick up this week with so much important economic data to be released and the European earning season getting into full swing.
Our financial spread betting clients seem to be just sitting on the sidelines for now. Investors seem to be unsure of whether the recent retracement in equities is offering up a good buying opportunity or whether there maybe a better buying opportunity in a week’s time.

Indices spread betting markets have come under pressure in recent days since it became apparent that the second round of QE from the US is not going to be as much as the market had hoped.
In fact it is certainly going to be nowhere near the trillions that were pumped into the system first time round. On top of this it’s highly unlikely that the UK will increase QE as was expected next week and if there is another round it’ll be well into next year.
The eclectic mix of economic data, which has sometimes been good and sometimes been bad, has done little to help investors form a clear view of how things will be six months down the line. This is what stock markets do. They look ahead and see how things are going to be in the months ahead.
While corporate earnings remain strong and some of the GDP data has surprised to the upside, the threat of a sovereign debt default in Europe is real and ever increasing as economies struggle to get to grips with their fiscal problems.
Plus on top of this we have the bizarre situation where good economic numbers are being received badly by the spread betting markets. All this is enough to cause indecision and as a result the markets are heading lower.
The FTSE is some 30 points in the red this morning and the few gainers that make up the leader board are mostly defensive utility stocks. There’s certainly been a flight to less risky stocks in recent days as utilities have risen whereas miners have fallen. At 5650 now the FTSE is looking vulnerable to further weakness particularly if it takes out Wednesday’s low around 5625.
Next week is huge for economic data releases with FOMC, BoE, ECB and then the Non Farm payrolls. However, today is also big as later on we get US GDP followed by Chicago PMI and then finish with University of Michigan confidence.
US GDP numbers around lunchtime are not expected to reveal anything too exciting and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see that the markets react more to the Chicago PMI and Michigan confidence data afterwards.
The Chicago number should show a decline, but mainly because it lags other PMI data and the confidence might post a small rise, however judging by how things have gone so far this week it wouldn’t be a shock to see this fall.

A little bounce this morning from the 5650 area and once again the recent declines could present a buying opportunity for investors.
The market’s rally since July has seen equities gain nearly 20%, but along the way we’ve seen our fair share of wobbles. Each wobble has been caused by the European issue and even though the threat of a sovereign debt default is looming large somewhere within the Eurozone, the declines in equities have been relatively short lived.
Since September the FTSE 100 has slowly ground higher, day by day and we are yet to see any significant sell off so, unless circumstances change, bulls seem happy to by into dips.
Circumstances may change in the coming days. Next week is huge for the markets with a plethora of economic data releases. Firstly there’s the FOMC in the US where QE II is expected to make her maiden voyage.
This will be followed by the BoE and ECB rate decisions, where the UK’s QE II is expected to remain firmly docked, and then we end the week with Non Farm payrolls. If ever there was a week of excitement in store for the financial spread betting markets it’s next week.
But for today at least the FTSE seems to have got over the hang over of the last couple of days. The sell off can be contributed to the fact that expectations of large amounts of blue and green paper being printed have been crushed. This is mostly because the economic data has made it apparent that the economy in its current state doesn’t need as much as the first round of quantitative easing.
The FTSE has broken above the upper downward trend line of the last few days so this morning the bulls are in control. Support is the recent low around 5630 and then below there at 5590, but any drive lower may not see further support until 5350. To the upside it’s the usual suspecting levels around the 5800-45 area, but before there at least 5695-5715 may provide a hurdle.

Markets look to be on the wane this morning after a poor showing in the Far East followed on from the session in Europe and the US.
This said the fall of just 45 points in the FTSE was the worst since August which demonstrates how boring the index markets have become.
The FTSE is called to come in at around 5685 but there seems to be currently no real appetite below 5670 or so. Support remains at this level and down to 5655 but chart watchers will not be happy if we record a close underneath 5640 as this would put us back into Septembers trading range.
The US markets remain reasonably solid but as with the FTSE sentiment might be fragile towards a sea change to the downside if support levels are broken. We would not want to close below 11110/20 in the Dow or 1176/78 in the S&P.

There is weakness on the spread trading markets at the start of the day with the economy moving to centre ground for many of the broadsheets.
The FTSE is back down at 5710 and sitting neatly on the 5705/10 support level. Below here the bears would be looking for 5660/65. On the up side 5740/45 looks a weak resistance and above there any level above 5770-5790 seems a tough nut to crack.
The Dow and S&P on the other hand are slowly climbing the mountain with the occasional pull back giving investors small ledges to buy at.
There may be a bit of nervousness as we approach the 29th Oct as this is seen as the date of the Wall Street crash. As it corresponds with a Friday at the end of the month traders may well decide that discretion is the better part of valour and start to lighten up on longs.

The FTSE is back up at the recent highs as mentioned following the time trodden reaction to Dollar weakness. We are now just 50 points from the highs of the year marked out in April at 5839.
As mentioned a few weeks ago, when we were a hundred and fifty points lower, it would seem rude to come so far and not have a bit of a pop at the high.
This said, there is solid resistance at the 5800 level which proved too much on many sessions back in the spring and the one time we did get above the mark it proved to be a very temporary attempt. On the support side 5740/45 may prove to be good resistance and below here 5680/85.
The US markets are reacting higher as well with an early morning move pushing us above 11200 in the Dow Jones almost reaching the 2010 high of 11255. Markets are now back up at the high range of 1999-2001 where the FTSE spent three years battling with the major psychological level of 6000.
