There is little that can explain the recent declines in indices so far this week apart from an aggressive sell off in risk assets across the commodities spread betting markets.
The increase in silver margin requirements by the CME exchange has had a knock effect across other metals and commodities as many traders either hit the big red sell button or have shorted the market to cover themselves.
This has caused a mild bit of panic selling across the indices and as mentioned there's nothing that one can really pin the blame on for the falls, such as a major geopolitical catastrophe or financial crisis.
Okay so the data out this week so far hasn't exactly covered itself in glory, with disappointing PMI numbers across the board, but again this is hardly enough to warrant such a retracement.
So this morning equity markets are seeing little interest from the bargain hunters as they commence the day on a flat footing with the FTSE around 5910. Our spread betting account holders have been tentatively buying into the FTSE but not to the same extent that we've seen in the past following similar falls, so maybe this time round they think things have further to go.

Risky assets are just taking a rain check this morning and the failure once again by the FTSE to meaningfully take out its 2011 highs is a concern for the bulls.
Our financial spread betting clients have been right to short the FTSE around the 6100-6080 area as this morning’s weakness brings us down to around 6030.
The FTSE continues to struggle around 6100/30 and looks dangerously to have formed a double or even triple top around the level, having attempted to break above in January, then February and again in May.
May is historically a funny month for the FTSE as there have been almost just as many negative months as there have been positive months over the past twenty seven years. The declines just have it too being slightly greater on average than the rises.
The old adage “sell in May, go away” is doing the rounds and is playing out so far this month, but of course it’s early days. Markets don’t go up in straight lines and with so much uncertainty within the market place at the moment whenever we look like heading to fresh higher ground investors get cold feet.
Once again it’s the mining and energy sectors which are to blame for the sell off as China has released some soft manufacturing data.
Yesterday’s worse than expected PMI numbers for manufactures was also unwelcome and today we get the release of PMI construction data which is also expected to drift lower.
At the same time UK money supply is released along with mortgage approvals. We’ve already seen Nationwide show that house prices fell in April, which was not expected and goes further to indicate that anything outside central London is stagnating or falling in price.

When the first African American President of the United States was elected a few years ago the "Obama bounce" took the financial spread betting markets higher in a wave of optimism and euphoria.
However, the gains were ultimately very short lived during a time when the banking crisis was at its peak and the bear market was just about at its lowest level.
This time round after "Obama got Osama" we've seen the "Osama bounce" be equally as short lived and some people are asking the question as to whether this marks an end point to these rallying markets.
Our spread betting account holders have been selling into the recent strength and are shorting the FTSE this morning even more.
Often a momentous occasion marks a turning point for financial markets and yesterday's reversal by many of the indices will be seen as quite bearish as the daily candlestick pattern has formed a shooting star.
This momentous occasion though has not only come as great relief to many around the world, but also acts as a sharp reminder that the threat of global terrorism is very much real.
Having taken ten years to find and eliminate Al-Qaeda's ideological leader, in that time the seed of its beliefs has spawned many more followers which will continue to be a problem for years to come.
The FTSE is catching up with the other indices this morning which have seen decent gains whilst the UK has been celebrating the Royal wedding. The extended weekend for many will have given an exceptionally welcome shot in the arm.
Many UK retailers in particular will have experienced trading that would equal the Christmas period and we are seeing supermarket stocks in demand today.
Earnings have remained robust and yet, whilst the US markets have burst through to new 2011 highs, European markets, in particular the FTSE, continue to lag a little.
The 6100 level remains a struggle for the London market which is most likely the reason we're seeing clients continue to sell at these levels. The 6135-50 area is quite major resistance above and meanwhile 6050to the downside and the trusty old 6000 level should act as support.
This morning's economic data comes in the form of PMI manufacturing data from the UK which is expected to remain stable around the 57.5 level, a small increase on last month, and will go to show the manufacturing sector still expanding.

Well, the indices spread betting markets certainly seem to have taken a shine to Mr Bernanke after his inaugural press conference as Fed Chairman caused a 100 point rally in the Dow Index, and a 10 year high in the Nasdaq Composite Index.
Closer to home, after a fairly lacklustre day yesterday, the FTSE seems to be maintaining its steady march towards the 6100 level and possibly beyond to new highs for the past 3 years, currently at 6110.

Attention will be on Bernanke's press conference to be held later this evening where he is expected to confirm the Fed’s dovish demeanour.
On the earnings front, Barclays is over 4% lower on the back of a 33% drop in pre-tax profit, tempering bullish sentiment on the benchmark index.
Banks and Resource stocks are having the largest negative impact and Energy and pharmaceuticals pushing higher.

One would be forgiven for expecting the FTSE to take a small breather from last week’s rally.
There are just 3 trading sessions this week in London, major earnings announcements on Wednesday and Thursday from Barclays, BP, AstraZeneca and GlaxoSmithKline and Asian shares have retreated from their recent 3-year peaks this weekend.
Despite opening 15 points lower, by mid morning the markets are some 30 points higher on the day at 6050, only a hop and skip from the year's highs at 6110.
On the other side of the pond, we are still in the midst of Earning Season, coupled with the latest Federal Reserve Open Market Committee meeting on Wednesday, with a decision on US interest rates due at 19.15 UK time.
So despite some fairly thin volumes over here in the UK, spread betting markets certainly have the potential to move to new highs with some help from any of the above economic releases.
