Spread Betting on Indices, 8 May 2009
The markets are holding up well this morning following the sell off in the afternoon of yesterday’s session and the release of the US banking stress tests.
Yesterday offered a dose of reality as most banking stocks came in for some profit taking as the news of huge loan impairments poured water all over the banking sector rally.
So the FTSE is a little perky this morning and we’re back around the 4450 mark. The test for the market now is whether it has the momentum to keep going and breach the 4500 level and close above it recording a new 2009 high.
The recent rally has seen dips providing investors with buying opportunities and whilst it looks like yesterday’s late decline is tempting bulls back in, the recent highs could be an opportunity to bank some decent profits.
Whilst investors are breathing a sigh of relief following the results of the stress tests the focus for today will be on US employment data due out at 13h30. The big figure is expected to show a decline of -62k, better than the previous month of -663k. The headline rate of unemployment is due to come in at 8.9%, a rise from 8.6% last month.
A poor figure could lead to further profit taking as investors shift their focus from banks to the outlook for the wider economy. At the time of writing we are calling the Dow Jones to open up as much as 90 points up 8500 and the S&P 500 up 11 points at 918.
Spread Betting on Indices, 7 May 2009
Resistance levels seem to be of no concern to the markets at the moment as the FTSE 100 looks to make another advance on the open this morning. We are calling the market to open a healthy 40 points higher at 4436, above the resistance level 4415 indicating that the bulls are still firmly in control of proceedings.
It is a big day for the markets today with interest rate decisions from the UK and EU and then the all important results of the US bank stress tests. Having said that, it is difficult to see what the results can tell us that we don’t already know.
The day has already got off to a good start with Barclays announcing a rise in first quarter profit. There were also some encouraging noises coming from the CEO about not only their capital adequacy, but their profit generation from their Lehman purchase.
Spread Betting on Indices, 6 May 2009
Despite a little move higher in Asia the FTSE is taking a small breather this morning and some profit taking is creeping in. The market is expected to fall sixteen points on the open to 4320 and this after it rejected yesterday’s highs and failed to test 4400.
Resistance is expected around the 4415 level, but in the absence of reaching that level the market may have run out of steam as investors tread cautiously ahead of the tomorrow’s US stress test results.
Recently the market seems to have been taking the bad news in its stride and any good pieces of economic data have helped boost us higher, the hallmarks of a bullish market. Having said that, this morning the FTSE 100 has struggled to take cheer from much better than expected consumer confidence figures.
Despite us still being in the middle of a deep recession and the recovery being a long way off, the risks of us remaining in a depression have abated somewhat and recently little glimmers of hope have appeared.
House prices show signs that their falls are slowing, the stock market has posted a tremendous gain in April and the banks seem to be getting their act together. On top of this the weather has been good to us and the tumble weeds blowing across the high streets seem to have disappeared. It does not come as too much of a surprise that we all feel a little better about the outlook. The Nationwide data rose the most in nearly two years, but still the reluctance of more bulls joining in the party shows great apprehension ahead of tomorrow.
It is hard to see today’s session being one to remember from a volatile point of view, with economic releases being very thin on the ground. Whilst our spread betting clients remain very short the FTSE, having sold into the recent strength, many other investors are most likely going to sit on their hands and wait for the Barclays trading statement tomorrow, then the BOE and ECB interest rate decisions followed by the results of the stress tests before committing anything more to the market.
Spread Betting on Indices, 5 May 2009
The FTSE is playing catch up this morning after the UK Bank holiday and a rally from US indices saw the S&P 500 and Dow Jones recover to levels just below where they commenced the year.
Investors were enthusiastic about banking stocks with big gains made by the likes of Bank of America, Citigroup, Wells Fargo and JP Morgan. On top of this US housing data and EU manufacturing data surprised to the upside. Most significantly, the S&P breached the 900 point mark which has not been seen since the beginning of January.
So the FTSE missed out on the party yesterday, but is expected to join in today as we are calling it to open up 100 points at 4340.

Spread Betting on Indices, 1 May 2009
Despite a last minute sell off in the FTSE 100 before the close yesterday, it was another stellar performance as the market even flirted with 4300 at one point.
Claims that we’re in the next bull run have been doing the rounds. It seems reasonable to be a least a little more optimistic about the prospect for equities given that half way through the current earnings season, the majority of forecasts have been beaten.
There is still good reason to be cautious though. Also, if there’s a mad rush of retail and private investors who start to jump into the markets, that’s usually a good indication that the best of this move from the lows is already over. Just when the markets were plummeting at the end of last year and the beginning of this one, too often I heard of stories of large amounts of private money going into the stock market, only for things to get a great deal cheaper.
This morning the FTSE is being called down 30 points to 4215 pretty much wiping out yesterday’s gains following a sell off in the US last night. Most European markets are closed for the European May Bank Holiday so trading is expected to be quiet and then of course the UK shuts up shop on Monday.

Banking stocks rose strongly yesterday and are higher again this morning, Royal Bank of Scotland in particular being one of the top risers in the FTSE 100. There has been a raft of analyst upgrades to banking stocks recently, with many claims that any threats of further recapitalisation are gone.
With the tax payer owning so much of RBS and Lloyds banks now, sentiment towards them has completely changed and new price targets have been set some 40 to 50% higher than where they are now.
It makes you wonder why it has taken these analysts so long to come to their conclusions. Most of the clever money has already gone into these stocks with Barclays, Lloyds and RBS having risen 400%, 170% and 100% respectively since the beginning of March.
Spread Betting on Indices, 29 Apr 2009
This morning the FTSE 100 can’t seem to make its mind up having been negative, flat, positive and now flat again. It seems strange that with so much going on in the markets from earnings to global geopolitical issues that the movements have remained so subdued.
Overall earnings so far have been good. Of the S&P 500 companies that have reported some 67% have beaten expectations. Although this does have to be taken with a slight pinch of salt as analyst estimates overall have been so depressed. When reporting wraps up for Q1 we will have seen the seventh decline in US corporate profits in a row, something not achieved since 1930.

Despite making a valiant effort to mark a two month high the FTSE is retreating once again this morning having also gapped lower quite significantly on the open.
So we’re now below the 4100 having had a surge towards the end of trading yesterday. However US indices suffered a late bout of profit taking after news that some of the big banks would not pass the all important stress tests set by the US Treasury.
Concerns over further capital required to shore up banks and the recession being deeper than expected are being compounded by the outbreak of swine flu.
As I write the selling does not seem to be abating as we mark new lows for this morning and there could easily be a move back down to support around 3900 if the outbreaks of flu spread further.
In the last two and a half months we haven’t seen more than three daily gains in a row for the FTSE which goes to show that the rally from the beginning of March has been a case of two steps forwards and one step back. In the last couple of weeks we seem to have reached stalemate.
The last thing that equity markets need is a flu outbreak, especially when signs of a recovery for equities looked to be holding true. Whilst the FTSE had broken back above the bear market trend line, other indices such as the Dax and in particular, US indices are languishing. It’s still too early to say that the bear market is over.
Spread Betting on Indices, 27 Apr 2009
Markets are well off from the highs of Friday night where the FTSE closed at 4155, still just under the 4160-4175 major resistance/support level built up over the last seven months.
We are still above the 1 year down trend line which was breached on Friday at around 4070 but a move back below this point would give investors real fears that the rally since early March was under pressure. Not only this but we are about to enter May and the old saying of ‘Sell in May and go away’ still has a remarkable number of followers.
Clients closed out on Friday evening heavily short of all indices and have been reaping a nice little windfall this morning as the policy of opposing all moves pays off once again.
Monday reversals of Friday moves are almost becoming rote these days especially if the Friday move is a low or high. Traders have begun to take light positions over weekends taking this into consideration and these have paid off many more times than not over the last few months.
This week is likely to be dominated by news from Mexico but the current situation in Pakistan should also be of concern. The Government is looking shaky in the face of Taliban insurgency and the US may find it difficult to influence events.
