Central Banks in Europe are just starting to become slightly more hawkish in their tone which is giving investors in equities a bit of provocation.
The FTSE still languishes around the 6000 level not seeming to garner the power to push on to new highs. With the prospect of interest rate hikes throughout 2011 this is the time when markets will factor in these higher rates and the possibility of lower equity returns.
The combination of stubbornly high inflation and a delicate economy makes the Bank’s job increasingly difficult. This is primarily because they continue to face pressure from politicians to keep interest rates low, so as not to threaten the recovery. However, at the same time their sole purpose is to keep inflation within the target range, which is currently way above wage inflation and thus eroding consumers’ spending power.
In emerging and Asian economies inflation is becoming a real problem. World food prices are soaring and the Central Banks in these areas are hiking interest rates to combat it. It’s only a matter of time before the BoE and ECB will have to follow suit.
Whereas in 2010 economists were pushing back the estimated time for the first rate hike by the BoE, in 2011 they are shifting their estimates closer.
At the end of last year the CBI forecast interest rates would start increasing before the summer, whereas many other forecasts suggest in the second half of this year. So don’t be surprised if we see a quarter percent rise sometime around Easter.
The FTSE is in profit taking mode and another indication that investors are shunning higher yielding stocks as interest rate expectations increase is the large declines we’ve seen in the utilities and telecoms sector.
These are actually seeing a little bounce today as the miners and banks drag us lower in early trade, testing the 6000 level. As a result of the sideways and range bound moves support and resistance remains unchanged and a key focus for bulls will be the 20 day moving average.
Our spread betting account holders have enjoyed the last few sessions that haven’t provided any breakout having sold the highs yesterday. They remain short of the major indices, no doubt expecting the retracement to continue.

The FTSE is taking a breather this morning around the 6050 level as Capital Spreads clients reflect on yesterday’s move higher and await the interest rate decisions from the BoE and ECB.
To the upside the FTSE should see resistance at 6070 and 6090 meanwhile support is seen at 5950 and 5920.
Just when we mentioned that the DAX 30 spread betting market was looking a little sluggish (yesterday) it then had a big jump higher following the bond auctions. The move took the DAX well above the 7000 level confirming the support of the 50 day moving average and almost recorded a new two and a half year high.
So all focus on the central banks and once again it’ll be what they say, rather than what they do, that will be closely watched. For the BoE things are looking OK-ish with manufacturing looking OK-ish and consumer spending remaining strong. However, therein lies the problem, as spending is stoking inflation which the BoE has started to take a more hawkish tone towards.
The ECB will be the focal point of the day and our spread betting account holders will want to see them confirm that they will continue to step up the purchases of peripheral government debt. At the same time President Trichet must stand firm as insist that these governments step up to the plate and sort out their mess.

So the US reporting season gets underway marked by the usual release of aluminium producer Alcoa’s number.
The update was good and is seen by spread betting account holders as an important trend setter for the rest of the season.
US markets continue to grind higher and are near 28 month highs, so expectations for corporate earnings are good. The next few weeks will be busy as traders assess how corporate America is set to be able to continue the recovery into 2011 and beyond.
Markets are benefitting once again from a strong Asian session with the FTSE 100 ticking higher in early trade and the increased appetite for risk is helping to lift metals and riskier currencies like the euro and sterling.
So the London market remains above the 6000 level but interestingly the DAX 30, which has been much stronger than the FTSE recently is below the 7000 level.
The Dax is finding the 20 day moving average, which it drifted below in late December, a bit of a challenge to get back above at the moment, so bulls are just a little concerned that this might be the precursor to a slightly bigger retracement.
The FTSE on the other hand is happily above its 20 day moving average having found good support from the level on Monday, so we’re seeing a small contraction in the FTSE/Dax differential which had widened significantly in the final quarter of 2010. An indication perhaps that investors are favouring UK stocks over German ones.
The only major piece of economic data out today is later on when the Fed’s Beige Book is released. Further evidence of improving economic conditions is expected as the majority of districts are due to report activity picking up.

The financial spread betting markets are perkier this morning after some strength from Asian markets overnight. We’re back above the 6000 level with the stocks that were hit hardest yesterday making back some of their losses.
Ironically, banks are much stronger this morning as concerns over European sovereign debt recede. This comes as far eastern countries like China and Japan have voiced their support for Europe saying they’ll continue to buy debt of many of the peripheral nations.
Economic data releases are thin on the ground today but things ramp up from tomorrow onwards with interest rate decisions from the BoE and ECB on Thursday and then US retail sales on Friday.

So markets are in profit taking mode with the FTSE 100 retreating from the 6000 level throughout the morning.
The weakness has been quite assertive as it’s not just the Eurozone sentiment that’s hitting the financial spread betting markets this morning. There are reports of a leak in a BP pipeline in Alaska and Brazil are seeming making unhelpful noises about trade wars.
BP’s shares are some 2% lower today and the retracement from the £5 mark confirms that last Thursday’s “shooting star” was an end to the recent strength. However, where we are now at 480p might see some support with the level having served previously as resistance.
For the FTSE 100 we’re back around 5950, just finding support for the time being at Friday’s lows. A break below here will open up 5900 and then 5860 is quite crucial meanwhile to the upside 6020, 6050 and the years high of 6090 are the challenges.
The worry for the bulls is that the index is testing the 20 day moving average which in the past has seen some a couple of nasty corrections to the downside following a close below it. We saw this is August and November last year, so the bulls are definitely nervous at the moment.

The profit taking in indices over the past few days is something to take note of. In particular there are a number of technical indications that we may see further weakness.
The FTSE 100 and a number of key constituents formed “shooting star” candlestick formations yesterday, which are often considered to be a sign that the buying momentum is over.
BP was the one that stood out in yesterday’s session and spent most of the day above £5, reaching a high of 510p. The shares then retraced aggressively in the afternoon to close below the £5 mark. This morning BP is holding it’s own around 495, but the warning signs are there.
Well the focus of today’s session is, needless to say, the non farm payroll number from the US at lunchtime.
Expectations for NFP are for a rise of around 150k but estimates range from as low as 90k to as high as 200k. The main thing spread betting account holders will be hoping for is not to see a repeat of December’s figure which was absolutely dire. Last month the numbers came in around 39k when three figures were expected. Of course this terrible number didn’t stop indices from recording substantial gains throughout the month.
This time round though the market wants to see a good number that really shows the US jobs market is on the mend. The unemployment rate is due to decline from 9.8% to 9.7%, which will be above the 9.5% for the 18th month in a row, but is a move in the right direction.
Certainly the trend in initial jobless claims indicates that jobs are being created and the ADP number earlier this week was very strong, so there are hopes being pinned on a good NFP today.

Risk assets bounced at the end of yesterday’s session with gold, oil and equities all rallying from their lows.
Markets started the day concerned about the spike in Portuguese bond yields following their sale however the sale was fully purchased. Later on the good US employment data, a mere prelude to tomorrow’s big NFP number, recovered the situation.
This morning the FTSE is flat with the pick of the bunch being BP shares once again and miners also seeing some interest after a bit of profit taking recently.
Despite the negative headlines about BP’s failure to avoid the Gulf spill (all stuff we already know), the share price has enjoyed an exceptional start to the year and is now back above £5, benefiting from firmer oil prices and bid speculation.
The economic data to focus on this morning is the UK’s PMI service number which is expected to remain flat at 53.0, above the 50.0 level suggesting expansion in the sector.
There is also the weekly US jobless claims numbers which have been improving in the last few months and even dipped below 400k. Today’s number is expected to be bang on that figure.

A bit of profit taking is creeping into markets this morning as buyers fail to keep up the momentum. January often follows the lead of December but in the past the FTSE 100 has seen almost an equal amount of declines for the month. It cannot me considered a bullish month like December or November generally are.
After the initial enthusiasm from investors it’s time to reflect and re-evaluate 2011 Q1 targets so as not to get ahead of oneself.
The FTSE 100 is back below the 6000 level but this area usually provides a bit of a battle ground between the bulls and the bears. It comes as little surprise to see this area behaving as a natural resistance level.
Whilst there’s profit taking in commodities and other risky assets, as we saw yesterday, there’ll be a similar reaction from the equity markets. An improvement in the dollar hasn’t helped either. So as we see oil and the industrial metals seeing some weakness today, naturally the indices are looking softer as well.

So the spread betting markets start 2011 with a jump in equity markets as the FTSE catches up with its European counterparts who saw strong gains yesterday whilst the London market was closed for the bank holiday.
Back above 6000, or at least testing that level at the time of writing this morning, the UK index is up over 100 points on the day. There is obvious resistance at such a psychological level and this will be added to by the fact that it has been around this figure for much of the holiday period (we have printed 5990/6000 in six of the last nine sessions).
Returns on equities are still good, but with bond yields rising the attraction is not quite what it was. A month ago the bulls might have been looking for a target in the high 6000s for 2011 as 10yr Gilt yields fell below 3%. Now the anticipation must be for something more stately around 6400/6500. The bears on the other hand still cling to the armoury of bad news (as above) as their protection.
Support is at 5965/75 and 5925/35 with stronger buying likely to emerge from 5910/20. Resistance is at 6000/6010. Back in 2007 the 6020/6040 range proved to be very resilient as three major bear moves failed (on the weekly charts) to hold below this mark.
