The positive news for the mining sector yesterday allowed markets to record modest gains after the FTSE looked like it might make further losses in the afternoon session.
The FTSE has moved sideways since Monday’s attempt at 5600 and the range of the last three days has only been some 90 points.
With lots of news that you’d expect to move the indices, nothing has materialised and the market is in a little period of consolidation.
Today looks to be much of the same although there’s some more US data that might excite. At 13:30 CPI numbers are expected to show a mild rise, mainly down to energy prices that have been creeping back up.
After that, industrial production and then probably the highlight of the afternoon is University of Michigan confidence, which is due to edge higher. Having said that, yesterday’s poor retail sales could lead to a bit of downward pressure.

For this morning however markets are shrugging off the news flow and price action of the last few days and enjoying a bounce. The FTSE is back above 5500 and the Dax around the 6000 level.
Last night the Dow Jones benefited from a decent Beige Book which continued to show an improving economy in the majority of US districts.
On top of this it mentioned unemployment will still rise and this did just enough to give investors the confidence that this are getting better, but not so much that interest rates will have to rush higher any time soon.

Markets continue to be influenced by news flow from the Far East and Asia. This morning weakness in Asian markets is affecting European indices on the open.
The rally that equities have been enjoying since March was always going to be tested at some point in 2010. It looks like a combination of tests is now challenging investors resolve.
Firstly, the earnings season in the US has got under way and started with a bit of a blip after Alcoa missed Wall Street estimates. Often in the past Alcoa’s earnings have set the precedent, so this is not a great start.
There are also some concerns about the performance of non-financial stocks which have been the focus ever since the credit crunch. This time around earnings for banks are due to rebound significantly, but outside of that sector many firms are still facing serious headwinds.
Secondly, the threat of rising interest rates will play the major part in any equity sell off. We cannot expect interest rate increases in Asian economies and in particular China to influence policy in Western economies. At the same time though, the markets will take note in any shift in the language and actions of central banks around the world.
So further weakness in the FTSE is expected this morning and we could test yesterday’s lows of around 5460 before too long.
Support for the FTSE is seen around previous resistance of 5450 and below there the well know 5380 level where the market struggled to get through back in November and December. If we retrace to that area good then support is expected.

Early attempts higher yesterday on the back of the Asian rally eventually came to nothing as the weight of ongoing problems in Europe and the US continue to worry investors.
The FTSE remains stuck in the range that has dominated since the turn of the year, 5500-5550, and frankly, with no data out today, it does not exactly look likely to make a break in either direction.
Constrained trading ranges after a rally have tending to be a presage of a small drop over the last five or six months and our clients appear to be of this opinion.
There is considerable selling in the indices this morning and quite a bit of lightening on the equity book as well, as mentioned last week.
While it is difficult to totally agree with such sentiment, it is also fair to say that equity holders have had a ‘jolly good run’ over the last eight months and no-one is going to blame investors for locking in a bit of profit at these levels.
As mentioned, there are no major releases today from the UK or the US and trading statements are few and far between as well from the corporate sector.
The markets might be forgiven for seeming to be a bit tired. With trading ranges continuing to dominate thinking, there is precious little incentive to get involved until support or resistance levels are threatened.
The FTSE is pretty much unchanged on the open at around 5535 and support at 5525 and 5495 will be the target buying areas for the bulls.
On the up side 5550 and the high yesterday, a rather neat 5600, will focus the sellers attention.
All the indices remain above the pre year end ranges so the bulls should still be the most optimistic. Nevertheless, a break and close below 5500 in the FTSE, 1030 in the S&P or 10580 for the Dow would be likely to concentrate minds somewhat.

The numbers from China showed a huge boost both in exports and imports and the immediate effect has been to push virtually every index to new highs. The FTSE is looking to open at 5560 and the Dow, finally, is shaking clear of 10600 and now being quoted at 10649-10652 in early action.
This week is particularly weak on the UK economic update front with just a few numbers on Tuesday and Wednesday to excite.
Today sees nothing from either the UK or the US so, as with most days like this, the speculation will turn towards a continuation of the underlying trend, in this case upwards.
When there is little to go on markets have a habit of just following the most recent direction and with the indices at new 15 month highs the bulls definitely have the bit between their teeth.
Traders will be eyeing the 5560/70 minor resistance level but as mentioned last week the target for the up side is the major 5650 level which proved decisive back in Sept ’08.
On the downside, the last four sessions having inhabited the rather constricted region between, approximately, 5500 and 5550. Accordingly, it does not take a genius to conclude that 5490/5500 might prove crucial to the bulls hopes for a continuation of the rally.

Manoeuvrings within trading ranges appears to be the modus operandum at the moment.
The banking and mining sectors continue to bolster the FTSE. However, with the domestic weather situation likely to damage revenues, on top of the warnings for prospects later in 2010, the retail sector, outside supermarkets, is struggling to maintain the highs of the year end.
The FTSE hit 5550 this morning in pre-market action and is still pretty much at the highs for the moment at 5530.
Trading ranges for the senior UK index have been very constrained since day one 2010 with just 70 points covering the four sessions since then.
It is easy to speculate on the same thing happening today, especially with many minds concentrating on the weather.
Resistance is at 5545/5550 and then above here at 5575 and 5650, support is at 5500, naturally, and 5475 with more major support at 5340.
While the FTSE continues to pressure the highs, the Dow, Dax and S&P seem to have also run into treacle. Just 100 points have covered the Dow Jones in the same 4 day period and likewise for the Dax and S&P.
All the indices seem to be struggling to make new highs stick and dealers are watching to play the ranges but also to keep a keen eye out for a break higher.
If one of the major indices goes for it then the others are in a prime position to follow suit.

Things are a tad dull in FTSE land, with tiny trading ranges yesterday for the index and today is not exactly gearing up to be much different.
The continued weakness in Sterling coupled with strength in Commodities is helping the index versus the Dax and the US markets. However, with both these markets struggling at the new highs, we are seeing continued selling from clients.
For the first time in over six months our clients are no longer at our company’s maximum permitted long level in UK equities. This may indicate that, for many, the markets have rallied enough and profits are being quietly snaffled away.
Our client equity traders have seemingly played a masterful hand since March ’09 and I, for one, am not about to say that they are wrong this time.
While there is significant room for a bear squeeze to the upside it must be recognised that the possibilities for a pull back are getting stronger.
The FTSE was a tail of Banking, Oil and Mining versus the rest. Anything exposed to the UK economy looks fragile especially after the December consumer confidence numbers from Nationwide took such a pounding.

The FTSE 100 remains above 5500 this morning but we are still struggling to get any follow through from the rally to the new highs on the first session of the year.
Not only this but the Dow Jones, DAX 30 and S&P 500, having joined in initially, are now sitting rather uncomfortably just above support.
While the best bet at the moment is possibly to the upside, as we are still above the old resistance levels, a close weather eye should be kept on the possibility of a disappointing fall back into the ranges.

As speculated yesterday, the first trading day of the year was its usual roaring success for the markets.
Investors must now hope that this is not just a repeat of 2007/08 and 09 where good starts were quickly reversed.
The FTSE is now at 5500, a nice round number for everyone to get excited about and the Dax is at 6050, also close to a big psychological figure.

Stock markets are quite well valued at the moment but equities continue to give better returns than virtually any other asset class, although this might not, of course, mean very much. However, the recent weakness in the Gilt markets is starting to place more attraction towards bonds.
Today sees the markets on the up and, as mentioned last week, this is not exactly surprising. The first day of virtually every year seems to be positive as funds look to place at least a bit of their cash pot, if only to avoid the accusation in December 2010 of missing out on a huge year long rally in its entirety.
All the equity markets are still well within their year end ranges and it is tempting to speculate that little will change in the first part of this year to break this trend.
Punters have been quick to counter any weakness or strength and we can possibly expect a continuation of this style of trading activity for the time being.
