Inflation is rising and in the UK CPI is expected to hit 4%, double the Bank of England's target. Even though the UK is about to go through government spending cuts at a time when the economy is looking decidedly dodgy, the Bank's credibility is being called into question as inflation has remained above target for five years now.
The concerns rattled through equity spread betting markets yesterday and the FTSE saw some profit taking. The index managed to find support around 6000, closing above it but this morning markets are not being enthused by Mubarak's refusal to step down.
Asian markets had a rough time of things last night as the decision not to hand over power is seen as a catalyst to further unrest within the region. The protesters refuse to leave Tahrir Square and now there's talk of demonstrations in Bahrain and plans for an anti-government demonstration in Iran next week.

The FTSE is suffering from a bout of profit taking, pulling us back to just below the 6000 level where for now we are just seeing a little bit of support.
A continuation of the sell off could see us test support at 5950 and below there the next support is seen on the figure at 5900. The upward trend line that we bounced off around 5800 at the end of Jan is now around the 5875 area.

The FTSE spreads market shrugged off the rate hike by China yesterday and mining stocks in particular recovered well from their lows. In fact the benchmark index finally broke free from its straight jacket and closed at its highest level for the year.
This morning there’s a little profit taking for the overall index as it drifts slightly into the red. Resistance for the index is seen at 6100 and, if we break above here, the 6140/50 region might prove to be stubborn, whilst to the downside 6050 and 6020/00 are support.

US markets continued their rally higher last night as investors there seem to be getting drunk on the prospect of better than expected growth in the world's biggest economy.
The good corporate earnings season there has attracted a new round of capital into the equity markets pushing the Dow and S&P to new two and a half year highs almost every day.
The FTSE 100 is still lagging other benchmarks, languishing below its 2011 highs as the prospect of a rate hike or two soon are just keeping its gains in check. We were calling the market to open a handful of points lower and now that trading is underway the FTSE its only a couple of handfuls in the red.
The earnings season in the UK is just starting to get underway with Randgold yesterday benefiting from record high gold prices and Xstrata this morning seeing profit rise a staggering seven times. Mining stocks may not yield much, but they never received a bailout during the financial crisis and they truly are riding the wave of the commodity bull market.

The effect on the financial spread betting markets is muted apart from crude prices which have seen a sharp correction to the downside. The FTSE is just struggling to make any ground as investors fret over this week’s BoE interest rate decision on Thursday where there’s a small chance that they could raise rates.
Sterling has appreciated in the last few days as expectations for a rate rise soon have increased, but this Thursday is too early. Nonetheless the threat is there and, as the copper spread betting market hits a new record high, inflation concerns are at the forefront of traders’ minds.
The UK index is hovering around 6000 and has recovered well from the retracement it saw in the latter part of January. However, it still is yet to break through to new highs and UK investors just seem to be sitting on their hands as they watch other major indices break their recent highs to new two and a half year ones. The Dax and Dow continue to grind higher and the Nikkei reached an eight month high on Friday.
Our spread betting account holders are still opposing the strength on the US indices and have been selling the FTSE this morning too. It looks like the higher we get the shorter clients become in the hope that there’ll be a decent follow through of any retracement, which as yet has not materialised.

Markets are slightly flat to positive this morning with the FTSE flirting with 6000 following comments from the Federal Reserve Chairman last night that lifted US stocks, albeit by just a small amount.
We may not see much action from the markets ahead of the US employment numbers due out at lunch time.
The NFP data is the major focus of the day and market expectations are for a figure of around 120-130k. It should come as no surprise to see the actual release better than this as yesterday saw good initial jobless claims and Wednesday’s ADP employment number surprised to the upside.
The unemployment rate will also be eyed closely as it’s expected to tick up from 9.4% to 9.5%, however this is following December’s large fall from 9.8%.
All in all it amounts to decent improvements within the US labour market, but these jobs creations have to be maintained for a substantial amount of time, if they’re not improved, in order to have any meaningful impact on the rate of unemployment. As the Fed Chairman mentioned last night, it’ll be several years before unemployment in the US is back to normal levels.

Investors are just taking a little cream off the top of the FTSE this morning after the strong rally yesterday back to the 6000 level.
Crude oil spreads continue to climb higher, with Brent up another 70 cents in early trade, and as long as the unrest in Egypt continues it's hard to see crude prices softening. This, in turn, could keep equity prices in check for the time being.
The FTSE spread betting market continues to lag other global indices such as the Dax and the Dow which hit new two and a half year highs yesterday although they couldn't hold onto them. This is one of the main concerns for FTSE investors in that its failure to take out the highs is a technical warning that the rally since July is stalling.
The London index as had a good bounce off the upward trend line around 5800 following its retracement in the latter part of January and traders are eyeing up the near term resistance at 6020, 6045 and then the year's high of 6070/80. A break below 5915 could pave the way for 5850.

Bulls pushed US markets to new two and a half year highs and closed above key resistance levels with the Dow Jones ending above 12000 and the S&P above 1300.
This morning the London market is in the black around 5975 with the obvious resistance being 6000, the first test for the bulls, and then 6030. The reversal of the recent losses has been a strong one and indicates that the markets bullish up trend is still in tact.

The markets have brushed off the tensions in Egypt and another spike in oil prices to head higher once again.
It seems that the retracement in the FTSE, which commenced back in the middle of January, has attracted some buyers back to the spread betting markets.
Yesterday the index bounced neatly off its upward trend line around the 5800 level so this rising area of support is now seen around 5810.
A move below here would spell an end to this brief bounce and the problem that UK indices face at the moment is that they started their move to the downside earlier than the Dow and Dax. As a result, if these markets see any further weakness then the FTSE could be testing that support sooner rather than later.
With January now over we look back at a month that saw very strong US earnings and renewed optimism within the Eurozone, but a London market that ended up lower than where it started the month.
January has been always seen mixed blessings for the FTSE with the market recording just about the same amount of losses as it has gains and the same can almost be said for the month of February.
Since the FTSE formed there’s been 14 gains and 12 loses in February, with the gains also on average being just greater than the loses in percentage terms.
Looking at what our spread betting account holders are up to in the indices, it would seem that they think the bulls will reign supreme once again as overall they are buyers of the FTSE and sellers of the US indices.
They must feel that the strength of the Dow and S&P 500 stocks throughout the US earnings season is set to come to an end. So far the North American indices have only seen a one percentage decline from their highs compared to the FTSE’s three percent.

Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East are never a good thing for financial markets and last Friday we saw just how they can affect oil prices in particular.
The US crude oil spread betting market jumped from $85 to $89, at one point rallying over a Dollar in 10 minutes. This understandably brought the sellers out in equity markets so this morning we’re seeing further weakness for the FTSE, albeit slightly better than where we were calling the market to open overnight.
The unrest has been going on for days and will continue well into this week unless there is a change at the top of Egypt. For now the military haven’t got involved which has led to a swathe of lawlessness, but the fear is that if they do the death toll could be made even worse.
There’s no question that the demands of the people for regime change need to be met, but the fear that the result would be a less friendly “ally” of Israel could put further upward pressure on oil prices.
The higher oil prices are not having the usual effect on the FTSE which you would expect to actually gain, with the oil majors seeing buyers. In contrast, this time the rises are for different reasons so the sell off is a broad one with only the utility sector making a little bit of ground.
We had been calling the FTSE as low as 5800 first thing on Sunday evening, but we’re some 30 points better than that now, having been higher in earlier trade.
With the bullish trend still evident the temptation is to buy at these levels particularly since the declines have been as much as 4% so far. However, many financial spread betting investors will be happy to sit on the sidelines for as long as the Egypt issue plays out for fear of trying to catch a falling knife.
The FTSE has been knocked from its highs more than many other indices, such as the Dax and Dow, so there’s a fear that if these indices see similar weakness to the FTSE the London market’s declines may have further to go.
The 5800 level is crucial as it’s the upward trend line for the market ever since this rally commenced in July, so a break below here could spell further weakness to around 5520 or even 5400 over the medium term.
