Spread Betting on Indices, 5 Dec 08
Markets look reasonably happy this morning albeit likely to open at lower levels than the close at 16.30 yesterday.
The US looked at one point in the evening session that it was going to go into melt down once again with a three hundred and fifty point fall in just one hour in the Dow but eventually it pulled out of the crash dive and is now just 150 down on Wednesday’s close. The markets are now struggling to put in place more than two down days in a row and the consequence is that we are still pretty much at the same level as at the end of the sell off in October. Not only this but the oscillations appear to be dying down a little as well which might tempt some further evidence of tentative longer term buying.
The call on the FTSE is at 4115 down around 50 points but this is actually quite good as at one point last night the FTSE Futures were indicating a price 100 points lower than this.
Traders continue to try to buy on weakness and Financial Spreads account holders certainly got heavily involved yesterday evening and seem to be happy to hold on into this morning’s session.
Rather like yesterday where early business was constrained by the interest rate decisions, today all eyes will be on the Non Farm Payroll number out of the States at 13.30. This may well lead to a period of very low trading activity after the initial opening flurry. Expectations are for the NFP to be down by 333K which would take unemployment up to around 6.8% from the current 6.5%.

Markets continue to jump around all over the place but the total effect seems to be very little. After the close at 16.30 yesterday the FTSE futures market initially traded almost 100 points lower before turning around and moving 130 higher, only for the open this morning to be called at around the closing level after all.
This type of activity is not exactly conducive to sensible/long term decision taking and traders seem to be getting ever more short term in their activities. We are seeing only around 1 in 10 opening trades remaining on the books at the close of business. There used to be a solid base of long term equity traders (buy and hold) over the past year or so. The extremely poor market performance has slowly beaten them into submission.

Markets appear to be a tad nervous on the open after the US took us through the mill last night. The Dow managed several 250/300 point moves in the afternoon/evening session including a 180 point five minute move at around the close.
Difficult to get too excited this morning the FTSE is off some 35 points from the good close yesterday. However there is little to read into the activity in early action. The recent rally of last week struggled to make headway above 4350 and below here 4160 seems a tough nut as well. To the downside there is still strong interest below the 4000 level so the current price FTSE 100 spread of 4084-4085 would appear to be pretty much mid market.

Markets today are, surprise, surprise being called well down on yesterday’s close at around the 3990 level. The optimism that we might have been about to get clear of the woods is draining away.
The falls yesterday were pretty much across the board with every sector of the index struggling. On the open at least it is difficult to pick a winner to get your teeth into. Tesco may well add to the gloom with its worst period of growth for...well, ever. But do not be too dismissive, it will still be growth for the biggest beast on the high street. A few years ago Tesco were said to take one in eighth of every pound spent, if they are holding steady, and can continue to do so, then there is some hope.

Spread Betting on Indices, 28 Nov 08
A little bit of Thanksgiving cheer is helping lift European indices this morning with glimmers of hope from a couple of pieces of economic data. Gfk Consumer Confidence released overnight came in mildly better than expected so maybe this Christmas won’t be so gloomy after all. House prices also indicated signs of slowing with the smallest monthly drop since prices started falling a year ago.
Are we out of the woods I hear you ask? Unlikely I’m afraid. Forecasts into 2009 are still very dreary and people are split about just how long the recession will last. It’s amazing just how contrarian the market has been over the last few days when headlines couldn’t be gloomier the equity market seems to be completely ignoring this frenzy of pessimism.
This may not be just a head in the sand phenomenon as Thanksgiving and the run up to Christmas is historically a good period for equities and FTSE 100’s double bottom looks to be taking shape.
Of course there’s always the flip side to the coin and despite some indices marking their best weekly gain since 2001, volumes are wearing a little thin and the recent rally from 3600 might be running out of steam. 4280 is the near term hurdle with resistance seen at 4345 and 4425 meanwhile support is expected around 4050.
With the Americans on holiday it is very quiet on the trading floor this morning so in the absence of any major data due today (the highlight is EMU unemployment at 10am) ranges should remain relatively narrow.
This morning’s little rise so far is rather under false pretences as there are more fallers than risers at the time of writing. However BHP Billiton is the beneficiary of bullish note from Merrill Lynch overnight. The stock posted a 7.6% rise in Australia overnight and is 2.5% to the good in the UK capping a remarkable week for the stock as it looks set to rise 50% just this week alone.
Spread Betting on Indices, 27 Nov 08
Last night the Dow put on 250 points which helped to bolster the FTSE after a bit of a nervous day. The senior UK index was heavily down twice during the session and quite nicely up twice. It then followed the US in late action after the official close.
Whilst it is easy to be negative it must be said that the index has now bounced off the 3675 lows twice, (Oct 21 and Nov 20), and quite healthily both times. It is tempting to wonder if we might have reached a plateau for the time being.
Many commentators have mentioned over the last few months that there are stocks out there with low, or no, debt, healthy dividend cover and solid business models (even in a recession). Picking a bottom for anything is a mugs game but small investment decisions can be made even in the grimmest of times.
Opening quotes are for the market to open up around 40 points at 4190 and this is good but not has nice as the estimate late last night where we were calling for 4250 this morning.
Trading remains very busy across all our platforms and there does seem to be a more confident air around. If people stop going shopping they will, presumably, be saving. Some of those savings may well find their way into the stock markets (you never know).
This is probably the most optimistic note I have written for many, many months. While the actual economy is likely to continue to contract and the headlines will get a lot, lot, worse this does not necessarily mean continued weakness in the equity markets.
Having said it is not a time for leaping in with both feet.
Spread Betting on Indices, 26 Nov 08
So we start another morning in the black as Monday’s 10% gain is slowly eroded away. Whilst a degree of optimism seems to be creeping back into indices, particular the US markets ahead of Thanksgiving, each pull back is a sharp reminder that the bulk of investors remain cautious.
Confidence wasn’t helped yesterday when BHP surprised the market by pulling out of its bid for Rio, causing Rio’s shares to tumble nearly 40%.
A wise move in retrospect as BHP’s CEO would have had the board’s full backing since none of the directors would have wanted to see their share price “do an ABN Amro/RBS”. Rio’s shares had a little dead cat bounce half way through yesterday and are lower again this morning as the company becomes a direct competitor of BHP once again rather than a partner.
Looking at the FTSE’s daily chart this morning any technical analyst would see that a “double bottom” has formed pinning in support around the 3700 level. This formation is considered to signal a turn in the market and so far we’ve had one but will we rally into Christmas as indices historically tend to do?
Thanksgiving is often a bullish time of year for equity markets and in the past it has marked the beginning of the Christmas rally, but as we keep on hearing “this time is different”.
Only a couple of week’s ago bulls of US indices were getting excited as the S+P 500 looked like it was forming a double bottom, indicating a rally from around the 850 level. That was then smashed as the support level was taken out and we saw mass selling driving the market down to 750 – technically not a good sign.
On top of this we are going into the festive season against considerable headwinds and one would be forgiven for thinking that Father Christmas is going to stay cooped up in Lapland this year.

The FTSE is called virtually unchanged as traders try to get a handle on Chancellor Darling’s stimulus package but the reality is that our markets are being buffeted by the winds from overseas.
Yes the FTSE rallied by 370 points (9.7%) yesterday but the DAX put on 430 (10.3%), the CAC 290 (10.1%) and I am pretty sure that Captain Darlings time at the despatch box was not exactly the reason for their moves. Since the close of business, UK time, last Friday the S&P and Dow are both up over 12.5 % so the bounce in the UK indices, whilst welcome, is not exactly world beating.
