Yesterday’s falls in the equity markets are being quickly wiped out this morning with the FTSE opening up at 5430 and shorts are looking a little nervously over their shoulders.
The last day of the year is either very, very, boring or wildly variable and we would probably only need the FTSE to climb to around 5450-60 to start some weak short covering in a thin market.
The DAX closed for the year yesterday at 13.00. It is not open today although Financial Spread are quoting an out-of-hours price. Tthe last few minutes saw a 30 point swing to the downside even though the FTSE, Dow and S&P were gently swinging higher at the time.
This is just a small example of some of the weird events that can occur as we get near to the closing bell on the last session of the year. Dealers with positions that they cannot hold over the year end are forced to trade and if there are too many trying to buy or sell they can shift the price alarmingly in the thin markets.

As speculated yesterday the 10570 region proved too be just too much for the Dow Jones.
In a quiet session with just 35 points covering the entire day, 10580 (or thereabouts) was the high. The late sell off in the last half hour, all of 25 points, has seen some minor follow-through overnight. However, at the moment, the bears seem to be as impotent as the bulls.
Support, as mentioned yesterday, is between 10470 and 10520 and has not really been tested either. We will probably be looking for some impetus from the last major US data release of the year at 14.45 with the Chicago PMI number.
The news that the high street stores had the best trading day of the year on Monday and that sales were overall up some 18% on last year might have been expected to give the retail sector a bit of a boost but such did not prove to be the case. The rally expired early on and the index eventually closed just 0.3% to the good. Most of this was from Tesco which represents 44% of the entire sector.
Banks also had a grim time of it being pretty much flat on the day and giving one of the worst performances of the entire 350. The whole rally over the last month or so has taken place with little help from the financial sector - which has actually fallen significantly.
For those who like history to repeat itself, this was actually the scenario in 2007 when the last rallies to the highs took place whilst the banking sector was falling. For those bears still out there this might be a crumb of comfort as, in reality, stock markets will find it increasingly difficult to rally in the face of a weak financial sector. Without strong lending economic expansion must take the form of organic growth and, sorry to say, it is difficult to see this helping much in the UK once the Bank of England stops printing money.
The FTSE 100 is holding steady above 5400 and in the short term the Bulls will be hoping for a year end dose of window dressing or at least a spike higher on the first trading day of 2010 (4 Jan).
It might seem strange but the first day of the year nearly always sees an up day even when the general trend is quite bearish. There is some support at 5415-5420 and then 5375 to 5400 (as you would expect).
To the up side the only obvious resistance is 5440 to 5445, as this proved to be the trading highs of yesterday. 5500 is a nice round number and proved to be a support and resistance level back in 2005/2006 so will probably prove to be a target/resistance level again but 5615 to 5640 is the next longer term target for the chartists.

Into the lull between Christmas and the New Year...and the Stock Index Markets are all sitting above resistance levels and in potential ‘new high’ clean air.
This having been said it must be admitted that there has been a limited reaction to all the indices finally breaking clear. Much of this might be a consequence of the time of year. It must also be admitted that buyers seem few and far between just now.
The Dow, oddly enough, is still actually below the intraday high of 10570 hit on 14 December when the resistance levels were mainly between 10470 and 10520. We are now above these but there is a little niggle in the brain. The big rally has not clicked in above 10570. This seems to be holding off any enthusiasm.
The Dow is now at 10560 and traders will be eying any attempt to get back under the aforementioned 10520 resistance (now support).
In the FTSE the 5400 barrier has definitely gone and initial action on the off this morning saw a spike in the FTSE futures pushing the index up to 5450 as weak shorts were squeezed. But, post this event, there has been precious little to excite us and dealers are, in the main, keeping their powder dry awaiting events.

Once again the FTSE made an attempt of pushing through the resistance levels and once again it failed.
Sometimes thin volumes can push markets beyond these levels but the FTSE 100 remains stubborn compared to other indices. The DAX and US indices marked new highs for 2009 yesterday but the FTSE cannot seem to jump the 5375-5385 hurdle just yet.
Already this morning the market has rejected 5385. We were calling the index to open around those levels. All-in-all we are up some lose change and still flirting with the idea of marking a new high for 2009.
With half a day’s trading before the FTSE closes for Christmas volumes will be pitiful as very few people are at their desks. But those who are in the office are clearly bulls as yesterday’s price action showed support for the market after the poor US home sales number.
The rest of today’s session will most likely remain exceptionally quiet as London closes before the US opens and a couple of bits of economic data, in the shape of durable goods and initial jobless claims, might offer a bit of after hours movement. Both numbers are expected to be good with jobless claims probably being the most interesting as it should indicate the US labour market is still improving gradually.
The technicals look positive for indices spreads on the whole as they mark new highs. If this afternoon’s US numbers are good then the FTSE might be closed before it can enjoy pushing on through resistance. If it eventually does get through this 5385 area then the next near term test will be 5420-25.

The CAC, DAX and S&P have all held onto the new ground this morning leaving the FTSE and Dow still just under the highs of last month.
With yearend buying looking more likely bears are getting slightly more circumspect. However we are still seeing general selling above 5350 in the FTSE as we have done every time we have reached this level over the past two months.
It is actually quite difficult to disagree with this activity as, until a break is actually achieved, selling at the range highs has proved very successful over the past couple of months. The same is true of buying below 5200 for that matter.
Major Resistance remains at 5375 to 5400 and minor support is now at 5335 and 5300. This having been said sellers must beware. With volumes likely to fade away for the rest of the year a sudden shift in one direction or the other is easier to achieve. And with the pressure currently to the upside this might be seen as the easier option for an assault as weak shorts may come under pressure to cover on a rally.
The FTSE has come in 20 points higher at 5348 reflecting the activity over night and in late evening trading yesterday. The Dow, at 10485, is holding on to the steady grinding rally. At the same time it also faded when attempting 10500 in early morning action today.
While the Dow has managed several intraday breaks of the 10500 level it has consistently failed to hold on above this mark. As with the FTSE, we tend to see selling pressure at these levels and, so far, the bears have had the upper hand at the highs.

Markets continue to be range bound after a rather half hearted attempt at the downside on Friday was easily defeated yesterday.
The FTSE has reconfirmed the support at 5180 and this morning has hit 5333 which has been the restrictive high for the last few weeks. The range at 5375 to 5400 being the higher barrier. Sentiment seems to oscillate backwards and forwards as the end of year dynamics start to enter the equation.
Yearend window-dressing is a well recognised event. It has caused many a blip higher in the last week or so and investors may be waiting on the possibility of this happening again.
The S&P 500 is also within striking distance of the highs with the current price at 1116.5 just 3 points off the peak. The DAX 30 is probing into new territory having cleared 5900 yesterday. All the signs are in place for a break out to the upside...the problem is that we have been here before several times and have failed on each occasion.
Traders are selling at these levels looking for a repeat of previous failures but a break above 5400 in the FTSE, 1120 in the S&P or 10520 in the Dow Jones might see some solid covering buying.

We are just about holding onto the support levels with the FTSE 100 bouncing off the 5200 level once again.
Investors seem reluctant to extend the rally further after the substantial gains we have seen since March. It also looks like most have shut up shop for this week ahead of the Christmas break.
The CBI’s revisions to UK growth next year is the main cause of the modest gains this morning. There is a little appetite for risk with a scattering of banks, energy and mining stocks leading us higher. Growth will be the highlight of this week as the final readings for UK and US Q3 GDP are released. The remainder of the week economic data is desperately thin on the ground.
The final Q3 GDP reading tomorrow is due to be revised from -0.3% to -0.1%, bringing the year of year down from -5.1% to -4.9%, so a slight improvement. However, once again, it confirms that the UK is still in a recession whilst other economies returned to growth in the third quarter.
The UK has now experienced its longest run of negative growth on record with three quarters of contraction making this a worse recession than the past four in the last century. The road to recovery is still a long and winding one. It’ll be even longer before we return to the sort of growth levels of the peak pre-crisis.
So the momentum for indices has come to an end for now as investors bank hefty gains and take some time to foresee what 2010 holds. My crystal ball tells me that next year won’t see a repeat of the sort gains we have seen for shares in 2009. I won’t be surprised if the FTSE 100 ends the year near to where it commences it.
While European indices attempt to make some ground this morning the dollar continues to find strength. This is a further indication that the dollar weakness/equity strength correlation is breaking down.
