Spread Betting on Indices, 4 Jul 08
The market is down this morning but hasn't given up yesterday's gains and with a quiet day ahead the market will be doing well to finish in positive territory. The danger of jumping in now of course is that it could well be a little too early Though the temptation must be great considering the market the FTSE has fallen some 900 points (14%) in the last 6 weeks, the old adage "catching a falling knife" springs to mind. Certainly the Capital Spreads account holders seem to think that the knife still has some way to fall as they've been selling before the open this morning and as a whole remain short the FTSE. 5370 looks like a key level for the FTSE 100 with many believing a break below this level will lead to 5290 before long.
With the North Americans on holiday today volumes are expected to be thin, but with the way the markets have been moving recently it remains unlikely that things will be any less volatile. Some TA boffins have mentioned that in the next few days a "big turn" is expected in indices, but you'll be forgiven to think that that turn may be 360 degrees as we continue in the same direction.

Spread Betting on Indices, 3 Jul 08
And the pain continues. M&S and Taylor Wimpey produced a real shocker yesterday morning but initially, somehow, the FTSE actually managed to shrug off the disastrous news and at one point was trading 80 points up on Tuesday’s close. It was not until the US joined the fray that a bit of sense seemed to drift into proceedings and down we came once more to close 53 lower. This morning the opening level is forecast to be another 30 points lower at around 5390 having been as low as 5365 in late Futures trading last night.
The markets are expected to drift again today on the open and, to be honest, it is difficult to see a major turnaround any time soon.
Spread Betting on Indices, 2 Jul 08
Markets this morning are likely to be slightly more positive (at least on the open) but it will take quite a lot to turn the general negative sentiment into a serious rally. The ECB is due to raise rates tomorrow which might be something of a sell the rumour buy the fact moment. If they actually do not raise rates now the effect might be the reverse as market watchers wonder what it is that they have seen that changed their minds.
At one point in after hours dealing the FTSE was being called 200 points down on the day but a late rally in the States last night means that this morning we are likely to open on the side of the angels with the early call being for a 20 point move to the upside on the open. The Dow turned a near 200 point fall into a 30 point rally after the Europeans had done their worst, shut off their screens and gone down the pub for a pint.
Spread Betting on Indices, 1 Jul 08
Markets this morning are looking to be pretty much moribund with the FTSE giving up 25 points from yesterday’s close and expected to open around the 5600 level. Nationwide have released their latest house price indicator which shows prices some 6.3% off from last year. The problem with the current house price indicator is that it is distorted by factors from both the buy and sell side. Few mortgages are available to buyers but few owners are being forced to sell (and thus accept a ruinous price). If one or the other factor is first to change then we could see either (at best) stability or (at worst) crash.

Last week’s Indices: US equities led the way down, stopping just short of a 20% fall from their peak. The Dow fell by 4.2%, the S&P by 3%.
Indices in Europe and the Far East were not much better off. The Dax fell 2.4% and the FTSE 100 dropped anther 1.6%. The Nikkei 225 as also fell, it closed down 2.9

Spread Betting on Indices, 26 Jun 08
Markets are likely to open slightly weaker after the States decided in late trade that the Feds ‘hold’ decision and ‘inflation watch’ stance was not as good as was hoped. The market initially rallied on the news but late selling drove the Dow Jones into negative territory late on.
The FTSE is likely to come in some 25 points lower at around 5635 as we continue to bumble around at the lower end of the recent trading range. There is heavy support at just below 5600 which we have had a couple of goes at in recent days and which will probably take some piece of bad news to breach. To the upside there seems to be a reluctance to get involved above 5690. So at the moment so we remain stuck in this range.

Nice to see that Barclays are just giving investors one day to decide on rights take up thus negating much of the ability for ‘short sellers’ to get involved. This approach has presumably been forced on them by the experience of HBOS and RBS over their long drawn out episodes but it may well become a market norm for future issues. This route is a far better solution to the problems over short selling before ex-right dates than the FSA’s 0.25% disclosure rule.
Overall the markets still seem to be stuck in the same trading range that has dominated over the past three months as the FTSE oscillates between 5600 and 6100
However the FTSE 100 has dropped a good 400 points in June.
Spread Betting on Indices, 23 Jun 08
Last week’s Indices:
US and European equities fell to their lowest levels since March. All of all the major indices fell by around 3% although the Dow Jones fared slightly worse at -3.8%.
The Nikkei 225 was the exception. It was buoyed by the weaker yen and benefited from China's end of week rally.
