How to Spread Bet on Imagination Technologies? |
If you want to speculate on companies like Imagination Technologies then one possibility could be to place a spread bet on the Imagination Technologies share price.
Looking at a spread betting site like Capital Spreads, we can see that they are currently valuing the Imagination Technologies Rolling Daily market at 462.7p - 464.7p. This means an investor could spread trade on the Imagination Technologies shares:
Increasing above 464.7p, or
Decreasing below 462.7p
When financial spread trading on FTSE 350 equities you trade in £x per penny. Therefore, should you choose to risk £3 per penny and the Imagination Technologies share price moves 26p then that would make a difference to your bottom line of £78. £3 per penny x 26p = £78.
Rolling Daily Shares Markets
You should note that this is a Rolling Daily Market which means that there is no preset closing date for this market. If you leave your position open at the end of the day, it just rolls over into the next day.
If your spread bet does roll over and you are speculating on the market to:
Increase - then you will often be charged a small financing fee, or
Decrease - then you'll normally receive a small credit to your account
You can learn more in our feature Rolling Daily Spread Betting.
Imagination Technologies Rolling Daily - Equities Spread Betting Example |
If we think about the above spread of 462.7p - 464.7p and assume:
- You've done your equities analysis, and
- Your analysis suggests the Imagination Technologies shares look like they will increase and go higher than 464.7p
Then you may buy a spread bet at 464.7p for a stake of, for the sake of argument, £15 per penny.
This means that you win £15 for every penny that the Imagination Technologies shares move above 464.7p. However, you will lose £15 for every penny that the Imagination Technologies market decreases lower than 464.7p.
Looked at another way, if you buy a spread bet then your profits (or losses) are found by taking the difference between the closing price of the market and the initial price you bought the market at. You then multiply that difference in price by the stake.
With this in mind, if after a few days the share price rose then you might want to close your position to lock in your profit.
So if the market moved up then the spread, set by the spread trading firm, might move up to 477.4p - 479.4p. In order to close/settle your position you would sell at 477.4p. Accordingly, with the same £15 stake you would calculate your profit as:
Profits (or losses) = (Final Level - Initial Level) x stake
Profits (or losses) = (477.4p - 464.7p) x £15 per penny stake
Profits (or losses) = 12.7p x £15 per penny stake
Profits (or losses) = £190.50 profit
Speculating on equities, by spread trading or otherwise, can work against you. In this example, you wanted the share price to go up. Of course, the share price could fall.
If the Imagination Technologies stock decreased, contrary to your expectations, then you could choose to close your position in order to restrict your losses.
So if the spread dropped to 453.1p - 455.1p then you would close your position by selling at 453.1p. That would mean you would lose:
Profits (or losses) = (Final Level - Initial Level) x stake
Profits (or losses) = (453.1p - 464.7p) x £15 per penny stake
Profits (or losses) = -11.6p x £15 per penny stake
Profits (or losses) = -£174.00 loss
Note - Imagination Technologies Rolling Daily spread betting market correct as of 31-Oct-12.
