How to Spread Bet on Equities - IG Group Shares?
At the time of writing the IG Group (June) market is 341.3p - 343.8p with Financial Spreads. This ‘June’ market expires on 17-Jun-08.
Like many markets, you can spread bet on the future price of shares, like IG Group shares, rising or falling.
Therefore you can financial spread bet on IG Group shares settling:
- Higher than 343.8p, or
- Lower than 341.3p
On the expiry date for this market, 17-Jun-08.
When spread betting on UK equities, you trade in £x per penny, where a penny in this case, is 1p of IG Group share price movement.
Eg if your stake was £6 per penny and the IG Group shares move 4p then that would be a £24 difference to your profit/loss.
Financial Spread Betting Example - IG Group
So let's say, taking the above spread of 341.3p - 343.8p, that after your market research, you feel that the IG Group shares will be higher than 343.8p on 17-Jun-08.
Therefore you buy at 343.8p for a stake of, let's say, £3 per penny.
When ‘Buying’ a spread bet, your profit / loss is found by taking the difference between the final value of the market and the value you bought the spread bet at, ie 343.8p and then multiplying that by the stake per penny of share price movement.
If, by the closing date of the market, it closes at 365p, then:
Your P&L = (365.0p - 343.8p) x £3 per penny stake.
Your P&L = 21.2p x £3 per penny stake.
= £63.60 profit.
But if the market didn't move as you originally forecast and had the IG Group shares fallen with the market closing lower at 320p, then you would have lost on this spread trade.
Your P&L = (320.0p - 343.8p) x £3 per penny stake.
Your P&L = -23.8p x £3 per penny stake.
= -£71.40 loss.

Where can I Find Free IG Group Charts?
