How to Spread Bet on ICI Shares?
At the moment the ICI (December) market is priced at around 647.3p - 649.7p with some of the spread betting companies. (Prices quoted at 10 Sep 07)
As with many markets, investors can spread bet on the future value of shares. That is to say that, you can financial spread trade on shares to go up or down.
So looking at an example, let's say you see the live ICI spread on an online spread trading service like FinancialSpreads.com and it states a spread of 647.3p - 649.7p. Let’s say that after your market analysis, you feel that the ICI share price will increase to more than 649.7p per share on the expiry date of 18-Dec-07.
Therefore you buy at 649.7p for a stake of, for example, £25 per penny. ie betting £25 for every penny that the shares increase in value.
If on the expiry date (18-Dec-07) the ICI shares close at 654.7p you will have made a profit. Your profit / loss is calculated by taking the difference between the closing level of the trade, 654.7p and the price you bought at, 649.7p.
P&L = (654.7p - 649.7p) x £25 per penny stake.
= 5p x £25 per penny
= £125 profit.
But if the market didn't work as expected and had the ICI value gone against you and closed down at, let’s say, 646.9p then you would have made a loss.
Loss = (646.9p - 649.7p) x £25 per penny stake.
= -2.8p x £25 per penny stake.
= -£70 loss.
Where can I Find Live Prices on ICI?
If you want to access live spread betting markets then you generally need to open an account with a spread betting company. Note that accounts are subject to status.

Where can I Find Candlestick Charts for ICI?
Like live prices, if you want to access to candlestick charts then you generally need to open an account with a spread betting company. Note that accounts are subject to status.
If your application is approved then you can log on to their website and access their candlestick charts.
You can often alter the charts to see market data by the minute, by the hour, by the week etc. There are also other settings that you can easily add such as Bollinger Bands and Moving Averages.
As you can see the charts show how the market's are not perfect and how you can expect the prices to "gap".
