How to Spread Bet on US Shares - IBM Rolling Daily
If an investor wants to speculate on US companies such as IBM then one option is to spread bet on the IBM share price.
If you were to look at the capital spreads spread trading site, they are currently valuing the IBM Rolling Daily market at $129.83 - $130.00. This means an investor could spread bet on the IBM shares:
- Moving higher than $130.00, or
- Moving lower than $129.83
When making a spread bet on US shares you trade in £x per cent. Therefore, if you risked £2 per cent and the IBM share price moves $0.05 then there would be a difference to your profits (or losses) of £10. £2 per cent x $0.05 = £10.
Note that you can also trade this market in Euros or Dollars, e.g. $x per cent.
Rolling Daily Equities Markets
Be aware that this is a Rolling Daily Market and so unlike a futures market, there is no closing date. If your position is still open at the end of the day, it will simply roll over to the next session.
If your spread bet does roll over and you are speculating on the market to:
- Move up - then you usually pay a small overnight financing fee, or
- Move down - then you will often receive a small payment to your account

IBM Rolling Daily - US Shares Spread Betting Example
If you consider the spread of $129.83 - $130.00 and assume that:
- you have done your market analysis, and
- it leads you to think that the IBM share price will increase and move above $130.00
then you may decide to buy a spread bet at $130.00 and invest, for example, £1 per cent.
This means that you make a profit of £1 for every cent that the IBM shares push higher than $130.00. On the other hand, it also means you will make a loss of £1 for every cent that the IBM market falls below $130.00.
Looked at another way, if you were to buy a spread bet then your P&L is worked out by taking the difference between the final price of the market and the price you bought the market at. You then multiply that price difference by the stake.
As a result, if after a few sessions the shares moved higher then you could consider closing your trade and therefore guarantee your profits.
Taking this a step further, if the market rose then the spread, set by the spread trading firm, might move up to $131.95 - $132.12. In order to close/settle your position you would sell at $131.95. As a result, with the same £1 stake this trade would make you a profit of:
Your profit = (Final Level - Initial Level) x stake
Your profit = ($131.95 - $130.00) x £1 per cent stake
Your profit = $1.95 x £1 per cent stake
Your profit = 195¢ x £1 per cent stake
Your profit = £195 profit
Speculating on equities, whether by spread betting or otherwise, is not straightforward. In the above example, you had bet that the share price would rise. However, it could fall.
If the IBM stock dropped then you might decide to settle/close your trade in order to restrict your losses.
Should the spread drop to $128.25 - $128.42 you would close your spread bet by selling at $128.25. That would mean you would make a loss of:
Your loss = (Final Level - Initial Level) x stake
Your loss = ($128.25 - $130.00) x £1 per cent stake
Your loss = -$1.75 x £1 per cent stake
Your loss = -175¢ x £1 per cent stake
Your loss = -£175 loss

Where can I Find Candlestick Charts for IBM?
Like live prices, if you want to access candlestick charts for US shares then you generally need to open an account with a spread betting company that offers US shares. Note that accounts are subject to status.
If your application is approved then you can log on to their website and access their candlestick charts.
You can usually alter the charts to see market data by the tick, by the minute, by the hour, by the week etc. There are also other options that allow you to easily add analysis such as Bollinger Bands and Moving Averages.
As you can see the charts show how US share prices, as with most financial spread betting markets, are not perfect and how you can expect the prices to "gap".
