How to Spread Bet on Hunting

How to Spread Bet on Hunting?

Should an investor decide to invest in companies like Hunting then one possibility could be spread trading on the Hunting share price.

Looking at a spread betting platform like FinancialSpreads.com, you can see that they have priced the Hunting Rolling Daily market at 750.5p - 753.5p. As a result, you can put a spread bet on the Hunting shares:

Hunting Spread Betting Example Moving higher than 753.5p, or
Hunting Spread Trading Example Moving lower than 750.5p

When making a spread bet on FTSE 350 shares you trade in £x per penny. As a result, should you decide to risk £3 per penny and the Hunting share price moves 34p then that would change your profit/loss by £102. £3 per penny x 34p = £102.

Rolling Daily Equities Markets

It is important to note that this is a Rolling Daily Market and so there is no settlement date for this market. You do not have to close your trade, should it still be open at the end of the trading day, it will roll over to the next trading day.

If you do let your trade roll over into the next day and are spread betting on the market to:

Hunting Spread Trading Example Go higher - then you are charged a small overnight financing fee, or
Hunting Spread Trading Example Go lower - then a small payment will usually be credited to your account

To find out more about Rolling Daily Markets read our feature Rolling Daily Spread Betting.

Hunting Rolling Daily - Shares Spread Trading Example

If we consider the spread of 750.5p - 753.5p and assume:
  • You've analysed the stock markets, and
  • You think that the Hunting shares will increase and go higher than 753.5p
Then you could decide to buy at 753.5p for a stake of £4 per penny.

So, you gain £4 for every penny that the Hunting shares rise above 753.5p. Having said that, you will make a loss of £4 for every penny that the Hunting market decreases below 753.5p.

Thinking of this in a slightly different way, if you were to buy a spread bet then your P&L is found by taking the difference between the closing price of the market and the initial price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that price difference by your stake.

With this in mind, if after a few sessions the stock started to increase then you might want to close your trade in order to lock in your profit. Taking this a step further, if the market did go up then the spread, set by the spread trading firm, might move up to 777.2p - 780.2p. You would settle your position by selling at 777.2p. So, with the same £4 stake your profit would be:

Your profit / loss = (Closing Level - Opening Level) x stake
Your profit / loss = (777.2p - 753.5p) x £4 per penny stake
Your profit / loss = 23.7p x £4 per penny stake
Your profit / loss = £94.80 profit

Spread betting on shares is not always simple. With this example, you had bet that the share price would increase. Nevertheless, it can also go down.

If the Hunting shares began to drop then you could choose to close your position to stop any further losses.

Should the market pull back to 725.2p - 728.2p then this means you would settle your spread bet by selling at 725.2p. Therefore, you would make a loss of:

Your profit / loss = (Closing Level - Opening Level) x stake
Your profit / loss = (725.2p - 753.5p) x £4 per penny stake
Your profit / loss = -28.3p x £4 per penny stake
Your profit / loss = -£113.20 loss

Note - Hunting Rolling Daily spread betting price taken as of 31-Oct-12.
