How to Spread Bet on US Shares - Hewlett Packard Rolling Daily
If an investor wants to invest in US companies like Hewlett Packard then one solution could be spread trading on the Hewlett Packard share price.
If an investor was to look at the Financial Spreads trading site, they are giving the Hewlett Packard Rolling Daily market at $46.45 - $46.52. This means you could spread bet on the Hewlett Packard share price:
- Going higher than $46.52, or
- Going lower than $46.45
When spread betting on S&P 500 shares you trade in £x per cent. So, if you decide to invest £4 per cent and the Hewlett Packard shares move $0.05 then that would make a difference to your profits (or losses) of £20. £4 per cent x $0.05 = £20.

Rolling Daily Equities Markets
One important thing to note is that this is a 'Rolling Daily Market' and therefore there is no closing date for this market. As a result, if your trade is still open at the end of the trading day, it will just roll over into the next day.
Should your bet roll over, if you are speculating that the market will:
- Move higher - then you would normally pay a small financing fee, or
- Move lower - then a small payment is often credited to your account

Hewlett Packard Rolling Daily - US Equities Spread Betting Example
Now, if you think about the above spread of $46.45 - $46.52 and assume that:
- you have done your analysis of the markets, and
- it leads you to think that the Hewlett Packard share price looks like it will push higher than $46.52
then you could buy a spread bet at $46.52 and risk, let’s say, £2 per cent.
Therefore, you make a profit of £2 for every cent that the Hewlett Packard shares move above $46.52. However, such a bet also means that you will make a loss of £2 for every cent that the Hewlett Packard market moves lower than $46.52.
Looking at this from another angle, if you ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your P&L is worked out by taking the difference between the settlement price of the market and the initial price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that price difference by the stake.
As a result, if after a few hours the share price rose then you might want to close your spread bet and therefore lock in your profits.
As an example, should the market rise, the spread, determined by the spread betting company, could be adjusted to $47.22 - $47.29. In order to close your position you would sell at $47.22. Accordingly, with the same £2 stake your profit would be:
Profit / loss = (Closing Price - Initial Price) x stake
Profit / loss = ($47.22 - $46.52) x £2 per cent stake
Profit / loss = $0.70 x £2 per cent stake
Profit / loss = 70¢ x £2 per cent stake
Profit / loss = £140 profit
Trading equities, by spread betting or otherwise, is not always straightforward. In this case, you had bet that the share price would go up. Of course, it can also decrease.
If the Hewlett Packard stock had fallen then you might decide to close/settle your trade in order to limit your losses.
If the spread dropped to $45.89 - $45.96 you would close your position by selling at $45.89. If so, this would result in a loss of:
Profit / loss = (Closing Price - Initial Price) x stake
Profit / loss = ($45.89 - $46.52) x £2 per cent stake
Profit / loss = -$0.63 x £2 per cent stake
Profit / loss = -63¢ x £2 per cent stake
Profit / loss = -£126 loss
