Gold Spreads, 18 Dec 2009
The strength in the Dollar caused gold’s correction to continue and quite aggressively too.
After its steep spike above $1200 the elastic band has well and truly snapped, but as yet the move to the downside hasn’t broken the uptrend.
$1100 has been mooted as a major support level for gold and this morning we see that support playing out somewhat. In truth gold has bounced back above $1100 to $1107 at the time of writing.
But a move below yesterday’s lows will open up $1050 which is where the upward trend line currently sits.

With the Dollar looking a bit stronger, Gold continues to struggle to regain momentum. The $1140 to $1150 level is proving something of an obstacle to the upside and weakness seems never far away.
Traders do not appear keen to attack anything below $1110 either so punters will be hoping for a range trade environment to make their plays.
The sharply rising short term trend line is currently at the $1110 level with the much longer one year trend support significantly lower at around $1040.
This is to emphasise that while we have seen a 100 Dollar pull back this has not, yet, impacted the bullish momentum.

Gold is making a bit of ground and crude is also on the bid. However, later could provide big swings not only from the FOMC minutes, but oil inventories this afternoon, so things could continue to remain heated throughout the day.

Gold Spreads, 15 Dec 2009
Gold almost reached a 10% retracement from the highs. Falling to $1109 from $1227.
Much of this can be attributed to the minor strength shown recently in the Dollar and this must be of some worry to the Gold Bugs.
As mentioned several times in recent comments, gold relies for its sky high valuation on four things. A weak Dollar, low interest rates, fears over future inflation and fears for financial stability.
If these pillars start to crumble then the way down could be very painful indeed.
Rallies are getting harder, as with Oil, and we are getting nowhere near retracing immediate recent falls.
If bearishness resurfaces there will probably be a bit of a battle over $1110 to $1100 but there is little volume support below here until $1045 to $1060.
Gold Spreads, 14 Dec 2009
Gold is a little better this morning seeing its first bounce after a couple of weeks of correction.
There are people still expecting the sell off to continue and possibly test $1100, but just for now the precious metal has found support at its 50 moving average.
$1110 remains support for now and there’s resistance around Friday’s high of $1140.
For the medium term the overall trend is still very much upward with the trend line support coming in around $1100 and below there is the past resistance of $1070 that could offer support if we get there.
So bulls of gold remain cautious for now, but might easily get back in or buy more on further weakness.

Gold has recovered some support, failing to break the support mentioned yesterday at $1120/25 reaching a low of $1121. Resistance remains at $1145/50 and punters will happily play the range until one or the other is broken.

Gold rather pleased me yesterday in managing to rally to exactly our resistance level at $1145-1150 before slumping back down again.
The Yellow metal is displaying some unnerving weakness at the moment, making heavy weather of any rallies whilst shifting into reverse with alarming rapidity. Of course, the bull momentum is still the overall motor to the market but we are just starting to hear a few misfires.
Support is at $1120/25 which the market might find it difficult to break this morning. Still, if this goes then we might well have a quick look at $1100, just to see how strong the support is.
As everyone knows there are some truly monumental longs in ‘hedgefund land’ out there and if these start to get twitchy things could get a tad messy.
Gold Spreads, 9 Dec 2009
As feared in yesterday’s comment the strength in the Dollar does seem to be taking the shine off of Gold.
We are now at $1130, the support level mentioned on Monday, having pipped down to $1125 a couple of times late last night and this morning.
The Euro has found support versus the Dollar at the $1.4680 price level and the yellow metal is still trading as a currency substitute.
If the Dollar gives up some of its gains then Gold might well regain the upper hand but if the recent economic news continues to underpin the Dollar then we might well be in for a rough ride for the Gold Bugs.
Support remains at $1130, where we are now, and obviously $1125 seems to be good as well. Resistance on the up side will be focused on $1145-1150 and then $1165.
The real long term bulls will be comforted that virtually every long term indicator is still heavily in favour of further gains, we do not even challenge the first medium term trend support until we have fallen another 100 Dollars and moving averages have not even started to turn negative.
This said we must beware of Dollar strength and an end to the loose fiscal policies of the Western economies.

Gold has regained some traction after the sell off on Friday but selling in early action this morning is giving the bulls another period of worry.
The recent, very minor, strength in the Dollar and small indication of economic strength from the Non Farm Payroll triggered a pretty exciting move from $1210 down to $1140.
The bull move is still very much intact but much more of this might dent the never ending exuberance of the Gold bugs.
While this remains a possibility it must still be noted that even minor weakness in the Dollar still has the power to bring out the buyers in force.
Gold Spreads, 7 Dec 2009
Gold was the biggest loser of Friday and remains weak this morning. Punters, as mentioned on Friday, were not keen to be buying above $1200 and they managed to ride the fall all the way down in the afternoon/evening.
There is a certain amount of buying coming back today but it seems of the 'nervous' variety taking a view of buying any Gold weakness as this has proved to be the game to play for many years.
Support is indeed just around this level at $1130/1135 but dealers should be aware that 'pull backs' in gold can be very violent indeed.
We have had two major retracements in the last four years from fast rallies. Both of these finally ran out of steam but not before wiping out at least 25% of the price.
If the same were to happen this time, Gold would have slipped to nearer $900.
