FTSE 100 Spread Betting Market Falls on Concerns Over Chinese Growth

UK Market Comment, 4 January 2012

Closing comments from Chris Beauchamp, Market Analyst, IG Index:

Heading into the close, the FTSE 100 looks set to finish around 35 points lower, having surrendered its morning advance.

London’s leading index has drifted lower throughout the day, with this morning’s gains proving as ephemeral as the post-new year optimism we saw yesterday.

To quote T.S. Eliot, who died 47 years ago today, the day-old rally for 2012 appears to be ending not with a bang, but with a whimper.

The twin perils of the Eurozone crisis and the possibility of slowing Chinese growth have been enough to cause investors to lock in some of yesterday’s gains.

The brightest spot in the day was Dominos Pizza, which gained 7% following news of decent sales growth over 2011 despite the difficult consumer environment.

Corporate news in the UK is still very thin on the ground in the post-festive season, and attention now begins to shift to everyone’s favourite data point, monthly Non Farm Payrolls.

This month’s forecast is for 140,000 jobs to be added to the US economy, an improvement over November’s 120,000.

Such a figure would be very welcome news, as it would signal yet more growth in the long-moribund US jobs market.

But for now, to borrow from T.S Eliot yet again, we must simply be still, and wait.

UK Market Comment, 3 January 2012

Closing comments from Chris Beauchamp, Market Analyst, IG Index:

Heading into the close for the first day of 2012, the FTSE 100 looks set to finish around 120 points higher.

US markets have joined the global rally this afternoon, helped by a positive reading on US factory output, which showed the fastest expansion in activity for six months.

Today’s data has been almost entirely positive, with only a tiny increase in Spanish unemployment spoiling the rather pleasant vista seen so far in 2012.

In London, the miners remain the biggest risers, although banks have also climbed on the band wagon as the afternoon has continued.

Retailing is a bit more mixed, with SuperGroup, French Connection and Home Retail all leaping higher, but HMV limping further behind with a drop of 6%.

Investors will be hoping that tonight’s Fed minutes will provide further optimism, with policymakers likely to smile about the general improvement in the US economy and make positive noises about the US moving ‘in the right direction’.

Of course, we know that they’ve sworn off more QE for now, but any hints that those at the Fed are ready to help out if needed could provide a bit more steam into this current surge.
