How to Spread Bet on Fresenius Medical Care?

If you decide to invest in companies such as Fresenius Medical Care then one solution could be spread trading on the Fresenius Medical Care share price.

Looking at a spread betting platform like Financial Spreads, you can see they are currently showing the Fresenius Medical Care Rolling Daily market at €52.44 - €52.58. This means that you can put a spread bet on the Fresenius Medical Care share price:

Fresenius Medical Care Spread Trading Example Moving higher than €52.58, or
Fresenius Medical Care Spread Betting Example Moving lower than €52.44

Whilst financial spread trading on German equities you trade in £x per cent. So, if you risked £2 per cent and the Fresenius Medical Care shares move €0.37 then that would be a difference to your bottom line of £74. £2 per cent x €0.37 = £74.

You are also able to spread bet on this market in Dollars or Euros, e.g. €x per cent.

Rolling Daily Equities Markets

Be aware that this is a Rolling Daily Market which means that unlike a normal futures market, there is no closing date. If you leave your trade open at the end of the day, it will just roll over into the next trading session.

If you do let your bet roll over into the next day and are spread betting on the market to:

Fresenius Medical Care Spread Betting Example Move up - then you will often be charged a small financing fee, or
Fresenius Medical Care Spread Betting Example Move down - then a small payment will usually be credited to your account

For a more detailed breakdown of Rolling Daily Markets please read our article Rolling Daily Spread Betting.

Fresenius Medical Care Rolling Daily - German Equities Spread Betting Example

Now, if you take the above spread of €52.44 - €52.58 and make the assumptions:
  • You have done your analysis of the stock market, and
  • You feel that the Fresenius Medical Care share price is likely to move higher than €52.58
Then you may decide to buy at €52.58 and invest £5 per cent.

So, you gain £5 for every cent that the Fresenius Medical Care shares go above €52.58. Nevertheless, such a bet also means that you will lose £5 for every cent that the Fresenius Medical Care market moves below €52.58.

Looking at this from another angle, if you were to buy a spread bet then your P&L is found by taking the difference between the final price of the market and the price you bought the spread at. You then multiply that difference in price by your stake.

As a result, if after a few hours the share price started to move upwards then you could choose to close your position in order to lock in your profit. So if the market moved up then the spread, determined by the spread betting company, might change to €52.86 - €53.00. You would close/settle your spread bet by selling at €52.86. As a result, with the same £5 stake:

P&L = (Closing Value - Initial Value) x stake
P&L = (€52.86 - €52.58) x £5 per cent stake
P&L = €0.28 x £5 per cent stake
P&L = 28c x £5 per cent stake
P&L = £140 profit

Speculating on equities, by spread betting or otherwise, doesn't always go to plan. In this example, you wanted the share price to increase. Naturally, it can also decrease.

If the Fresenius Medical Care shares had started to fall then you might choose to close your trade to limit your losses.

If the market fell to €52.34 - €52.48 you would settle your spread bet by selling at €52.34. That would mean you would lose:

P&L = (Closing Value - Initial Value) x stake
P&L = (€52.34 - €52.58) x £5 per cent stake
P&L = -€0.24 x £5 per cent stake
P&L = -24c x £5 per cent stake
P&L = -£120 loss
