Forex Spreads, 28 Jan 2011
EUR/USD continues to hover around $1.3700 having moved sideways for the last three days. The short term uptrend remains in tact, but just looks to be running out of momentum at this level so areas to watch are $1.3635 and $1.3575 to the downside and $1.3755 to the upside.
Cable has had quite a volatile few days but remains contained by $1.6000 above and $1.5800 below. A break beyond either of these two levels could signal a continuation of the move in that direction, but one still gets the feeling that any upside momentum is limited.
USD/JPY couldn’t hold onto ¥83.00 despite the Japanese downgrade and is at ¥82.65 this morning. Apart from the bounce from its lows in early January, the rate has gone sideways since then. Investors are undecided as to whether to completely can the US Dollar or whether the sell off over the past twelve years is well and truly over, after hitting levels as low as fifteen years ago.
Forex Spreads, 27 Jan 2011
Currency markets are leaning in favour of the Dollar this morning. EUR/USD is just drifting from its highs above $1.3700 and USD/JPY is seeing an aggressive move back above ¥83.00, however the rate is just pulling back slightly now.
There’s little explanation for the sudden strength in the US currency in early trade this morning, but the bounce of ¥82.00 for the USD/JPY has caught a few traders off guard. A break above ¥83.10 could open up the way for further gains.
For EUR/USD the uptrend that commenced a couple of weeks ago is still very much in tact. As long as $1.3575 isn’t taken out we could see a test of resistance at $1.3735 and then $1.3805.
Forex Spreads, 26 Jan 2011
EUR/USD had a see-saw session yesterday flirting with $1.3700 and dipping back below $1.3600 before settling in the mid $1.3600s. The Euro was mixed as it benefited from severe Sterling weakness but it couldn't quite make up its mind against the Dollar as the Spanish regional banking stocks took a hammering over concerns about their funding.
Against Sterling the Euro gained over 1% causing a big drive down back below the €1.1600 level. Here GBP/EUR found support just as it had earlier in January but this morning Sterling hasn't managed to attract any sympathisers who are pushing the rate below support to €1.1530.
For EUR/USD resistance is seen at yesterday's high around $1.3690 and above here $1.3735. The recent upward momentum is still in tact with the bulls aiming for $1.4000 over the medium term, so they'll want to see support at $1.3575 and $1.3525 remain in tact.
GBP/USD suffered its fair share of weakness too on the FX spread betting markets as it tumbled from $1.6000 and, straight after the GDP number, it lost over a cent within half an hour. It finally found support around $1.5750 from where it finally found some friends but the sharp decline could have rattled out some bears.
Forex Spreads, 25 Jan 2011
As US markets continued to climb the Dollar was sold off yesterday after its initial early gains. In the morning it was very much the Dollar pushing ahead, but a recovery in equity prices saw those gains reversed into loses.
The FOMC meeting tomorrow will reiterate that interest rates in the US are set to remain low for a considerable duration. This will continue to make the Dollar less attractive in the short term.
The Euro has managed to weather the Irish storm and got a bit of support from the outcome of the Portuguese election. The result was a move above and beyond $1.3600 for EUR/USD as its rally from below $1.3000 continues, even in the face of stern opposition.
Sentiment towards the Eurozone is still down beat and Citigroup were particularly bearish yesterday following the political fallout in Ireland, but the bulls are managing to squeeze the bears out and push EUR/USD higher.
This morning we're at $1.3670 and resistance is at $1.3680 and $1.3735. Bit by bit we're creeping closed to $1.4000 which certainly is a big psychological level, but before then $1.3800 is a major barrier as it's the downward trend line from the 2009 and 2010 peaks. Support is seen at $1.3525 and $1.3465.
Cable's battle with the $1.6000 level continues to play out. Sterling simply can't find the momentum to hold the ground above it. We're at $1.5945 this morning with the $1.6035/60 area being resistance and to the downside support remains unchanged around $1.5885 and $1.5835.
Maybe the BoE minutes due for release tomorrow might give renewed impetus for expectations of interest rate hikes and lead to a concerted move above $1.6000.
Forex Spreads, 24 Jan 2011
Currency spread betting markets have a slight bias towards the Dollar this morning with the US curreny making gains across the board.
EUR/USD has drifted from the $1.3600 level and is at $1.3570 while Cable has retreated from $1.6000 again and is at $1.5970. No prizes for guessing where resistance is in Cable and support isn’t really seen until $1.5835 and $1.5785, so the bias is to the downside.
For EUR/USD it looks like there’s a bit of profit taking which could see a retracement to $1.3540 and below here support is seen at $1.3465 and $1.3420. Resistance is at $1.3640 and $1.3735.

Forex Spreads, 21 Jan 2011
In the chaos of the selling in the shares spread betting markets the Dollar recouped some of its recent losses, in particular against Sterling. I have to mention that in yesterday’s comment we identified Cable as looking a little over bought and there was quite a big move to the downside.
$1.6000 truly is a major resistance level at the moment and this morning we’re at $1.5940. The retail sales data might provide a little excitement in the Sterling rates so keep an eye out at 9.30.
EUR/USD hovered around the $1.3450 level touching $1.3500 before retracing to $1.3400 and ending the day slap bang in the middle. This morning we’re at $1.3530 and levels to watch to the upside are $1.3570 and $1.3600 while to the downside $1.3420 and then $1.3360.
Forex Spreads, 20 Jan 2011
EUR/USD had another strong day on the FX spread betting markets, having a go at the $1.3500 level before ending the day just below it. It's one step closer towards its real test of $1.4000 but before then over the medium term $1.3800 is quite a hurdle.
Technically things are looking rather better for EUR/USD which only a few days ago was languishing below $1.3000 looking like it was going to head down towards the mid $1.2000 area. This morning we're at $1.3420 so near term resistance is at $1.3540, $1.3570 and then $1.3655. Support is seen at $1.3360, $1.3320 and then $1.3250.
GBP/USD has rejected the $1.6000 level again and is at $1.5950 at the time of writing. The UK CPI data earlier in the week has given Sterling a boost this week, but traders are still slightly sceptical about what the BoE will do. For many, the assumption is that the central bank will give into political pressure and keep rates at 0.5% even though the market has shifted expectations for a hike in H1 this year.
The daily candlesticks of the past two days certainly look quite bearish so Cable bulls just seem to have dried up around $1.6000.
Forex Spreads, 19 Jan 2011
On the economic data front UK unemployment is due out at 9.30am and last month we saw that surprise rise in the rate to 7.9%. There is still a great deal of fragility in the UK labour market and many of the jobs being created at the moment are part-time. It should come as a surprise if we see the rate tick up to 8% today.
One of the important items included in this release is the average weekly earnings which the BoE will be focusing on over the next few months to see if the inflationary pressures are feeding through to wage demands.
EUR/USD had another go at the $1.3450 area and yet again it failed to hold onto the gains as it retraced back to below $1.3400. This morning however we're having another pop and are currently above the $1.3450 level having the fifth go at it this year alone.
At $1.3465 this morning any break above $1.3500 should pave the way for $1.3585, but if the single currency can maintain this momentum then the real test will be the long term upper downward trend line currently around $1.4000. To the downside $1.3250 is a near term support, then $1.3150.
Cable put in a good performance as it spiked aggressively following the CPI numbers yesterday. The recent strength of Sterling and STIRs have been indicating the shift in interest rate expectations, however the government will continue to lean on them to keep rates low.
As one of the MPC members said yesterday it doesn't matter where inflation is now or in six months, but where it is in two years. Well that is a long term view and not all that helpful in addressing a problem that is going to hurt over the next twelve months.
Cable proved that the $1.6000 level is a bridge too far and fell back after the initial strength. Such a rejection of the highs might be seen as quite bearish as the bulls dried up, but that doesn't seem to be the case so far this morning as we're at $1.6030. Key levels are yesterday's high $1.6060 and $1.6100 to the upside with $1.5925 and $1.5885 expected to offer support to the downside.
Forex Spreads, 18 Jan 2011
Inflation is the focus for UK investors today with CPI and RPI numbers being released at 9.30 this morning.
Something that is already causing central banks in emerging economies to act and they have been for some time now, it is soon going to be the turn of Europeans to do the same.
At the last meeting of the ECB the language was more hawkish than normal citing its concern in the recent jump in inflation and for the BoE their undertones have been indicating action on interest rates could be quite soon.
This change in interest rate expectations is another reason for the likes of Sterling and the Euro seeing a bit of renewed strength in the last couple of weeks. A few bankers have recently be saying how a bit of inflation isn't all that bad, but the levels at which they are now, and are expected to get to, are cause for concern.
Wages in both the private and public sector are barely going up at all, if not they're going downwards, so as prices rise consumers' spending power is rapidly being eroded. Savers will also be hit particularly hard as prices for petrol, food and clothing continue to move skywards.
On the forex spread trading markets, the Euro retraced some of the gains it made last week with a dip back below $1.3300.
Eurozone finance ministers enjoyed a jolly little catch up yesterday sitting round the table drinking tea and eating biscuits. They then most probably went out for a very decent dinner in Brussels before repeating the whole process again today. This seems to have had the desired effect for the Euro which is strengthening this morning to $1.3350.
The recent strength has led to ambivalence for the Euro as investors continue to be undecided as to whether the single currency is under valued at its current level or if it has further south to head. The $1.3400/50 area remains a significant resistance level for EUR/USD and to the downside support is seen at $1.3165.
Sterling also made back some ground against the Euro and isn't far off the €1.2000 level again which remains quite a hurdle for GBP. Without a move back above here soon we might see GBP struggle to reclaim and maintain €1.2000, but with the Euro remaining under pressure, a test of 2010's high around €1.2360 can't be ruled out.
Forex Spreads, 17 Jan 2011
Economic data is thin on the ground today but things get busier as the week goes on. Tomorrow sees UK inflation data, Wednesday UK unemployment data, Thursday Chinese GDP numbers and then Friday UK retail sales and German business confidence. Plenty to get our teeth stuck into as well as the US earnings season.
Papers are full of the concern over inflation and the actions being taken by emerging economies. We started to focus on higher inflation and the risks it poses towards the end of last year and as food prices continue to rise, the terrible weather in countries like Australia are further compounding the problem.
These prices are filtering through to Western economies as we’ll find out tomorrow with UK CPI expected to rise to 3.3%, which looks conservative so the release could be higher than that.
On the FX spread betting markets, the Euros strength of last week is now looking to have run out of steam as EUR/USD dips back below $1.3300. The rejection on Friday of the $1.3400 level was a repeat of the same move earlier in the year and so far today’s move is rather a bearish one.
Currently at $1.3275 support is seen at $1.3230 and then $1.3165 and to the upside things look like they’ll prove heavy going with $1.3390 and $1.3450 being the resistance.
