Forex Spreads, 25 Feb 2011

On the currency markets the Dollar continues to be out of favour with traders and the Euro has been making some good ground in recent days. Now above the $1.3800 level we almost broke through to a three and a half month high earlier.

The major challenge for EUR/USD is coming up around the $1.3975/1.4000 level which is the long, long term downward trend line that you can draw back from the 2008 highs. To the downside $1.3715 and $1.3645 are support.

Cable still languishes around the $1.6145 having retraced from the $1.6250 level for the third time in as many months. Levels to watch are $1.6100 and $1.6075 to the downside and the $1.6230/65 area to the upside.

Forex Spreads, 24 Feb 2011

The currency spread betting markets have had a volatile session so far this morning along with crude. EUR/USD which was hovering around $1.3775 before 7am has had a bit of whip lash as it fell back towards $1.3700 but is back to $1.3765 already. So to the upside $1.3785 and $1.3820 are levels to the upside to watch with $1.3960 and $1.3645 to the downside.

Cable also suffered a similar big decline early on and hasn’t seen the same sort of recovery as it’s failed once again at the $1.6250 level and retraced to $1.6175. To the downside $1.6120/00 is support and no prizes for guessing that $1.6250/65 is resistance.

Forex Spreads, 23 Feb 2011

Bank of England minutes are released at 9.30 this morning and are expected to provide some really interesting reading. Bit by bit the MPC has seen its undertones become more and more hawkish and the two members who voted for a rise in January might very possibly have been joined by another hawk leading to a split vote of 5-3-1.

There could be some fireworks for Sterling spreads, especially if the member was previously considered to be a staunch dove. There is a possibility though that the voting pattern remains unchanged as after all the UK GDP data is hardly conducive of higher interest rates.

Many in the MPC know raising rates won't necessarily bring inflation down because it's being fuelled by things completely beyond its control, such as increases in VAT and commodity prices.

At the same time the BBA releases data on mortgage approvals which is expected to rise slightly, but a rise that isn't necessarily supposed to indicate a change in the trend.

This afternoon the only thing to focus on from an economic point of view is US existing home sales which are also expected to show a small rise.

The Dollar gave back some ground yesterday, after US investors returned to the forex spread betting markets, which allowed the likes of EUR/USD and GBP/USD to make substantial recoveries during a particularly volatile session.

EUR/USD bounced from the mid $1.3500s to touch $1.3700 and this morning we're above $1.3700 with upside targets of $1.3755 and $1.3780 and to the downside support is seen at $1.3625/00.

For Cable a similarly volatile session took place and we've just about crept above the $1.6200 level this morning so bulls will be targeting $1.6230 and $1.6265. On the downside, $1.6120 and $1.6080 are seen as support.

Forex Spreads, 22 Feb 2011

Despite gold getting stronger and stronger by the hour yesterday this did not correspond with the usual expected weakness from the Dollar on the forex spread betting markets.

The safe haven session meant both assets were popular amongst traders and as such the Dollar index managed to stop the rot by having its first gain in four sessions. Volumes were thin though, with US markets closed for a bank holiday, so things should pick up again today.

The majors though really spent the day going sideways with EUR/USD being capped by $1.3700 to the upside and propped up by $1.3650 to the downside.

This morning however the picture is very different with the Dollar making a good move to the upside. EUR/USD is at $1.3535 and key levels traders will be watching are $1.3625 and $1.3650 to the upside with $1.3500 and $1.3475 to the downside.

For Cable the session was pretty similar with a narrow trading range and this morning is also seeing a significant move lower.

The pair has looked to have been trying its third attempt at breaking through the $1.6250/75 area in a bid to push onto new multi month highs but that isn't going to happen today. We're at $1.6140 and levels to keep an eye on are $1.6265 to the upside with $1.600 and $1.6035 to the downside.

Forex Spreads, 21 Feb 2011

On the currency spread betting markets, the US Dollar is starting the day on the front foot after a poor latter half of last week’s trading. The Dollar Index has dipped back below 78.000 and had been looking like it was going to break back above 79.000. However, this level, which was previously support, held up as resistance and so this morning we’re at 77.700.

The Australian Dollar is just seeing some profit taking as it finds the $1.0100/1.0150 area too hot to handle. AUD/USD has found the parity region, and levels just above it, a tough nut to crack since the mass selling of the US Dollar seems to have abated.

Now on the $1.0100 figure this morning this area is due to provide some support so a break below might open up $1.0055 and $1.0020. To the upside major resistance is seen near the recent highs of $1.0160.

EUR/USD and Cable are pretty flat this morning at $1.3675 and $1.6220 respectively as FX traders try to assess what impact the Libyan tensions will have. Usually it would translate into a much stronger move higher for the Dollar, but not this time as safe haven investors have sought solace in gold.

Forex Spreads, 18 Feb 2011

This morning Germany has already seen inflation data much higher, in fact double, than expectations with the culprit being the higher commodity spread betting market. This is yet another indication that higher base prices are feeding through to producers who have to pass this onto the consumer.

UK retail sales have been the highlight of the morning coming in much better than expected providing further evidence that the severe weather before Christmas seriously hampered the economy.

Expectations were for a much lower figure as retails sales had been trending lower before December so this morning’s number has certainly surprised to the upside.

It just goes to show that if you keep consumers away from their shops for a prolonged period then they will only bounce back with greater vengeance the moment they have the opportunity to splash their cash. A similar bounce in retail sales was seen this time last year after the dire weather conditions in January 2010.

Also today sees preparations for this weekend’s G20 finance minister meeting in Paris which is due to focus on monetary reform and the other hugely topical subject of world food prices. As the price of soft commodities continues to creep higher bit by bit a huge proportion of poorer people’s income is being spent on the bare necessities.

On the FX spread betting markets Cable is on its way to test its high from earlier this month as it heads above $1.6200 this morning following the UK retail sale data. Near term resistance is seen at $1.6225 and then $1.6280 just above 3rd of February’s high. To the downside $1.6075 and the figure $1.6000 are near term support.

EUR/USD crept above $1.3600 yesterday as the pair continues to retrace some of the losses it has suffered since the start of the month. At $1.3580 this morning resistance is seen at the recent highs of $1.3630 and the $1.3670/90 while support is seen at $1.3530/00.

Forex Spreads, 17 Feb 2011

The Dollar has had a little set back in the last couple of days but this morning is just about winning the battle of the currencies. The US currency has had a decent February so far bouncing almost 2% against the other majors.

This morning the Euro is only giving up 10 points to $1.3555 and Cable is just about flat at $1.6095 as on the whole currency markets have been relatively quite in the last few days.

EUR/USD has been drifting around the $1.3500 level meanwhile Cable has been doing the same around $1.6100, with Sterling just about having the upper hand against the Euro.

GBP/EUR once again failed to get above €1.2000 as yesterday’s comments form the BoE indicated their reluctance to raise rates any time soon.

Forex Spreads, 16 Feb 2011

Well "inflation" has hit the 4% mark but we really know that the real rate of inflation for many people is around 8% to 10%.

The effect of January's VAT rise is yet to have been felt and this will show up in next month's figures pushing prices even higher still.

Growth for the UK economy is currently in negative territory, government spending cuts are underway, unemployment is rising, with more evidence of that expected this morning, wages are falling and prices and taxes are rising. How and why would anyone want to place a further burden on the economy by raising interest rates?

Of course the Bank of England is meant to ignore most of the above and focus purely on inflation but it's clear now that it serves a dual purpose of trying to prop up the economy as well. By all accounts that's not an easy job at the moment; especially when so much of the upward pressure on prices is down to record commodity spreads.

What will be of interest today and next month is the average earnings data which will be closely monitored by the BoE. This will give a clear indication of whether wage negotiations are being won by employees in order to meet the pressures they are facing from higher inflation. However, it's hard to see many employers giving above inflation wage increases, if any at all, when they themselves are feeling the pinch of a contracting economy.

After this we see the BoE's Inflation Report and the market will be hoping for some clarity on their stance on the economy as well as inflation to see just how much the economic backdrop is leading to their reluctance to raise rates.

No doubt we'll hear that they expect inflation to come back towards their target within two years, talk of sounding like a broken record. What will be interesting will be their growth forecasts which have been quite bullish up to now; has the recent decline in GDP affected that forecast much? All eyes on the data at 10.30 this morning.

Sterling was once again a winner in the forex markets yesterday with GBP/EUR getting above €1.1900. This morning it’s at €1.1935 so bulls will be hoping for a test of the €1.2000 level. This has proved a tough level to crack with four failed attempts to get above it in the last two and a half months so if we get back there will it be fifth time lucky?

EUR/USD drifted above and below $1.3500 yesterday looking like it had seen the last of its declines which commenced a couple of weeks ago. The lack of a meaningful recovery and yesterday's sideways move has called any strength that there's been into question and this morning we're at $1.3550.

Forex Spreads, 15 Feb 2011

Chinese inflation numbers have come out lower than expected but at 4.9% which is above their central bank's target of 4%. This has gone some way to placate markets which were expecting a number well above 5%, but this probably won't mean an end to the tightening from the Chinese who are likely to continue raising rates on top of the three hikes they've made in recent months.

For the UK CPI issues are also causing monetary policy makers major headaches. Today is expected to see inflation hit 4% and that's not going to be the peak according to many analysts, even the Bank of England themselves.

If the number comes in higher than expected then calls for a rate rise will become louder. There's every chance CPI could come in greater than 4% as after all oil spreads have driven up petrol at the pump and January's VAT rise should also provide some upward pressure, although the effects of this are not expected until subsequent months.

In honesty though we can speculate as much as we want as to the connotations of such a figure, but we should know more after Wednesday's quarterly Inflation Report.

The Euro suffered further weakness on the currency spreads markets dipping below $1.3500 before finding a bit of support around $1.3425. European finance ministers meeting in Brussels had another meeting over a coffee and a croissant but without revealing any radical actions to address the Eurozone debt issues.

A rise in yields of the ten year government bonds of Portugal and Spain also added to the selling pressure for the single currency, which suffered most of its weakness against Sterling as GBP/EUR had a go at the €1.1900 level. This morning EUR/USD is at $1.3480 having been above the $1.3500 level all night long and GBP/EUR is at €1.1895.

Forex Spreads, 14 Feb 2011

This morning’s currency spread betting movements belong to Sterling which is edging ahead against the Dollar and enjoying good strength against the Euro.

Cable is just about holding onto $1.6000 having been higher in earlier trade but support at $1.6000 and $1.5965 are important to the rate to being able to maintain its recent strength.

Against the Euro we’re just testing the resistance around €1.1900 at which the cross last failed a week ago. The last few months has seen GBP/EUR trade neatly between €1.1600 and €1.2000 with no real clear winner in the battle between the two neighbouring currencies.

The USD/JPY has been tracking sideways so far today with the Dollar just tipping the balance of power in its favour. At ¥83.26 this morning we’ve just broken below the very short term upward trend so ¥83.00 and ¥82.80 will be keenly watched by the bulls with ¥83.75 a resistance target.
