Forex Spread Betting, 3 July 2009
Sterling is also managing to sit tight against some serious tests of support. Cable has drifted sideways through the short term upward trend line which is marginally worrying and this may give cause for a move back into the $1.58 to $1.60 region.
However sometimes trend lines just lose their power, a market cannot just move in one direction forever.
The recent activity of Cable may give bulls the hope that this is one of those times. At $1.6402-$1.6405 the weight is still slightly to the downside which might restrict long position building for today at least.
It must also be said that when the US sneezes the UK catches a cold and the employment numbers yesterday Stateside coupled with quite a few headline job cuts over here in the last week might make for some grim unemployment numbers next time around.
Total’s complete refusal to negotiate the walk-out of some of its contractors shows that the whip hand is very much with the employers in many sectors at the moment. This will almost certainly translate into low wage demands and acceptances in coming months/years.
Low earnings expectations and weak job prospects do not exactly bode well for a service sector economy. The pound may once again start to come under pressure in the coming weeks.
Forex Spread Betting, 2 July 2009
So far this week there’s been a test of sterling’s strength against the euro. Sterling has given up over 2% against the single currency and at this moment is testing the upward trend line that has been formed since March at €1.0500.
At the time of writing sterling/euro is at €1.1600, with the trend line sitting around €1.1550. Already there has been a little support around this area.
As mentioned previously, sterling’s initial sell off at the end of 2008 did look hugely over done and gradually the pound has been clawing back much of those loses as investors realised that the eurozone is hardly any better off than the UK.
However, as the interest rate differential currently stands, with UK rates at 0.5% and EU at 1.0%, positive sentiment for the euro is starting to build once again.
The comments from the ECB have been largely more hawkish than the BOE and once again today the focus will be on words rather than actions.
Forex Spread Betting, 1 July 2009
Cable had another eventful day yesterday after hitting an eight month high versus the dollar at $1.6742, only to reverse its gains just as quickly as it had made them.
Until yesterday morning's move, sterling was suffering from "FTSEitis" by ranging annoyingly in a 400 point range and looked decidedly weak every time it approached $1.6600. However after the Nationwide housing data was released the bulls had a rush of blood and sent cable beyond its recent high.
The inability to hold onto the highs and sharp rejection back to below the $1.6500 level was not only profit taking but also looks like a "hanging man" on the daily chart. That is technical jargon for a possible bearish signal.
For the bulls though, we have yet to close below the 20 day moving average, which means that there's plenty of support out there and the rise still seems to be intact. Cable is at $1.6440 at the time of writing.
The forex markets traded a bit of tit for tat as the UK's better than expected housing data was swiftly countered by poor GDP numbers and better than expected US housing and PMI figures.
The mixed economic data has left most markets in two minds at the moment, so the range bound trading continues. Support in GBP/USD is seen around $1.6425 and $1.6350, with resistance around $1.6525 and $1.6600, again.

One ray of hope (for some interest) is that the Pound has gone for broke this morning and busted straight out of the recent trading ranges.
The 07.00 to 09.00 (UK time) trading period is becoming quite interesting as Europeans turn on their screens and hammer the market one way or the other.
The high this morning at $1.6742 has been opposed quite strongly since it was hit at 07.21 this morning and we have slipped back to $1.6650ish with punters getting heavily short all the way up.
Those who have dealt with sufficient margin to avoid being stopped out on the way up may be hoping for a nice price correction back into the $1.6200 to $1.6550 trading range but if we do not get back down there today the chances of a new range being set up are quite strong.

Forex Spread Betting, 29 June 2009
Cable this morning seems to be moving towards the highs of its range after looking briefly for a move lower in early action.
$1.6550 is still a good resistance level although we did spend a few hours last Wednesday probing the 50 pips above here. The current GBP/USD spread is $1.6540-$1.6543 (having hit $1.6430 earlier) and we are seeing sellers sharpen their knives once again.
The $1.6200 to $1.6550 range is becoming a little boring now so we might hope for some attempt at a break out but I would hardly hold my breath.
The weight of money opposing every move is becoming increasingly successful as (so far) there has been no significant trial of weak longs or shorts. A move above $1.6600 may be interesting but for bulls it is probably not worth getting involved until this resistance has gone (or the market goes back below $1.6300 again).
The bears seem confident that this morning’s move will fail again as we are seeing heavy selling as we approach $1.6550.
The moves so far this morning are almost solely Sterling based with the Dollar, Yen and Euro all quite moribund.
There seems to be a sense of trying to find the weakest currency rather than looking for the ‘strongest’ as the news from across the globe continues to be poor.
For all of the ‘talking up’ from the OECD the Swiss Central Bank intervened last week selling the Swiss Franc at the $1.0650 level.
The Franc is (like gold) a safe haven instrument and the return to the highs for the currency would indicate that a lot of money is unhappy with current conditions.
The immediate move of almost 350 pips on the news of the selling showed that the SCB still has significant power but we are well off those immediate highs (at $1.1015) and the general drift into the Franc seems to be still in place.

Forex Spread Betting, 26 June 2009
Cable continues to bounces like a pinball machine between $1.6200 and $1.6600, refusing to break out in either direction.
This morning we are around $1.6480 at the time of writing and attempting to have another look at the highs around $1.6600. If we get up there, my money is on clients coming in and selling at that level as they have done repeatedly in the past.

Sterling, yet again, played the range yesterday. By the look of our books our Financial Spread Accounts seem to have picked this one out as well.
$1.6200 to $1.6550 vs the dollar has been the play to follow for weeks now. Although it briefly went up to $1.6600 in the morning, the reaction to the durable goods orders in the afternoon was music to the ears of the sellers.
Another 250 pip trading day makes it 19 sessions in a row of plus 200 points range which is a good indication of why cable is coming back into fashion for our spread betting clients.
There is a rising trend line from April which we touched on this morning at $1.6320 which may well give a good clue as to direction in the short term. If we hold above it then the odds favour a return to the highs. If we break lower then the bears will be focussing on the long term up trend currently at around $1.5575.
The Euro is doing well after the OECD announcement of an anticipated return to growth next year but the poor old pound may be looking at rates of 0.5% for a year or more from here.
This will not be pleasing to the cost of carry merchants and there must be renewed fears of a return to sterling weakness.
A few years ago the Yen was being hammered by the rate difference between Japan and the rest of the G10. And this was for a country with a massive trade surplus. If the UK has to retain low rates as others increase theirs what attractions there are for the pound may start to fade once again.
Forex Spread Betting, 24 June 2009
As mentioned several times over the last few weeks cable has been trading the $1.6200 to $1.6550 range and yesterday was yet another example. The morning low was at $1.6210 and the current GBP/USD spread is $1.6534-$1.6537. For those who read the signs, it was a candy from a baby moment.
We are now seeing clients exit longs and taking profits. We have also seen an increasing number of reversals as well with shorts being built up above $1.6500. If you have played the game over the last six or seven days, why not do it again? I suppose that is a reasonable view.
Short players should be wary though of a move above $1.6575 as there is a solid resistance range from $1.6540 to that point. If the pound manages to get above this mark there may be a further shift higher.
Forex Spread Betting, 23 June 2009
The pound continues to oscillate between $1.6200 and $1.6550 with the markets testing the lower end of this range this morning. As commented last week, the currency markets, especially sterling/dollar, are becoming ever more popular as the trading ranges seem to be almost guaranteed.
Every day is seeing at least 200 pips of tradable spread. Often there is a 300 point range. With the current range looking set in stone punters are making hay in the summer sun.
Forex Spread Betting, 22 June 2009
On the currency front things seem remarkably quiet after last week's big moves. Although there was no big rise or fall in any particular direction, the trading ranges were large after big swings in both directions for many currency pairs, in particular cable which has been oscillating between $1.6620 and $1.6190 over the past week.
$1.6660 remains the high for now and there has been two failed attempts at getting above this level. The daily chart for cable looks to have formed a double and even triple top with resistance keeping a cap on gains for sterling.
Against the euro €1.1870 is proving a bit of a struggle for sterling too. Slightly better than expected German Ifo business data this morning has put a halt to sterling's advance for the time being.
