How to Spread Bet on Essilor International?

Should you want to speculate on European companies such as Essilor then one possibility is to spread bet on the Essilor share price.

Looking at a financial spread betting site like Tradefair, we can see that they have priced the Essilor Rolling Daily market at €77.37 - €77.55. Therefore, you could spread bet on the Essilor shares:

  Essilor Spread Trading Example Going above €77.55, or
  Essilor Trading Example Going below €77.37

Whilst financial spread betting on French shares you trade in £x per cent. As a result, if you chose to have a stake of £5 per cent and the Essilor share price changes by €0.21 then that would alter your P&L by £105. £5 per cent x €0.21 = £105.

You are also able to trade this market in Euros or Dollars, e.g. €x per cent.

Rolling Daily Equities Markets

One thing to note is that this is a Rolling Daily Market which means that there is no predetermined settlement date for this market. If you leave your trade open at the end of the day, it simply keeps rolling over into the next trading session.

If a bet is rolled over and you are spread betting on the market to:

  Essilor Trading Example Increase - then you will be charged a small overnight financing fee, or
  Essilor Trading Example Decrease - then a small payment is normally credited to your account

If you would like a fully worked example then see Rolling Daily Spread Betting.

Essilor Rolling Daily - French Equities Trading Example

Now, if you think about the spread of €77.37 - €77.55 and assume:
  • You've completed your analysis, and
  • You think the Essilor share price will increase and move above €77.55
Then you could decide to buy at €77.55 for a stake of £3 per cent.

Therefore, you make a profit of £3 for every cent that the Essilor shares push higher than €77.55. However, such a bet also means that you will lose £3 for every cent that the Essilor market moves below €77.55.

Thinking of this in a slightly different way, if you were to ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your profits (or losses) are found by taking the difference between the final price of the market and the price you bought the market at. You then multiply that difference in price by your stake.

As a result, if after a few sessions the share price started to increase then you might think about closing your spread bet and therefore guarantee your profits. Taking this a step further, if the market did go up then the spread could change to €77.94 - €78.12. You would settle/close your trade by selling at €77.94. Therefore, with the same £3 stake your profit would come to:

Profit = (Settlement Value - Opening Value) x stake
Profit = (€77.94 - €77.55) x £3 per cent stake
Profit = €0.39 x £3 per cent stake
Profit = 39c x £3 per cent stake
Profit = £117 profit

Speculating on shares, by spread betting or otherwise, is not always straightforward. In this case, you had bet that the share price would go up. Nevertheless, the share price could go down.

If the Essilor shares weakened, against your expectations, then you might choose to close your trade to stop any further losses.

So if the market pulled back to €77.10 - €77.28 then this means you would settle/close your trade by selling at €77.10. Accordingly, your loss would be:

Loss = (Settlement Value - Opening Value) x stake
Loss = (€77.10 - €77.55) x £3 per cent stake
Loss = -€0.45 x £3 per cent stake
Loss = -45c x £3 per cent stake
Loss = -£135 loss

Note: Essilor Rolling Daily spread betting market correct as of 23-Jan-13.
