UK Market Comment, 14 September 2011
Closing comments from Yusuf Heusen, Sales Trader, IG Index:
Heading into the close, and positive sentiment appears to be evaporating from equity markets.
There may have been something of a relief rally seen early in today’s session, but this failed to last after US retail sales data fell short of expectations and reports started to emerge of Austria turning to the EFSF.
This all served to give traders yet another reason to book what profits they’ve been able to accrue of late, and although there may have been some signs of a rebound, right now it’s looking lacklustre at best.
The stagnation in the US economy, combined with what is looking like the increasingly inevitable default in Athens, is really casting a dark shadow over markets right now.
What’s more, the clear risk remains that if Greece falls, other fringe nations will be poised to tumble as the required confidence amongst bondholders just won’t be there.
Looking into the latter part of the week, UK retail sales, Eurozone inflation and the Michigan confidence reading all have the potential to provide some direction.
There’s also that meeting between Geithner and Eurozone finance ministers, although it seems unlikely there will be any magic solution offered here.
The focal point for the majority looks set to remain on what happens next in Athens.

UK Market Comment, 13 September 2011
Closing comments from Yusuf Heusen, Sales Trader, IG Index:
Heading into the close and equities are finding a degree of support.
After a disappointing start to the day’s trade, it seems as if the successful bond auction in Italy has given markets something to cheer about.
The positive start on Wall Street also helped drive even the most lacklustre European indices back into the black.
It remains to be seen whether the rally can be sustained given the fractious Eurozone situation.
Some member states appear to be fast running out of patience with countries along the bloc’s southern fringe.
Looking to the future, spread betting markets will be looking for reassurance following a discussion scheduled between the Greek, French and German heads tomorrow.
US retail sales due tomorrow afternoon also have the potential to provide meaningful direction.
That said, markets are risking getting a little ahead of themselves. Yes, the Italian bond auction has gone off successfully but there’s still an awful lot that needs to be overcome.
