How to Spread Trade on Equities - Emap Shares?
Currently the Emap (June) market is 472.5p - 475.8p with Financial Spreads. This market expires on 17-Jun-08.
Like many financial markets, you can trade on the future price of shares, like Emap shares, to increase or decrease.
In this particular case you can spread trade on Emap shares settling:
- Above 475.8p, or
- Below 472.5p
On the expiry date for this ‘June’ market, 17-Jun-08.
When spread trading UK equities, you trade in £x per penny, where a penny in this case, is 1p of Emap share price movement.
Eg if your stake was £6 per penny and the Emap shares move 4p then that would be a £24 difference to your profit / loss.
Financial Spread Betting Example for Emap Shares
For example, let's say, taking the above spread of 472.5p - 475.8p that you have done your market research and you think that the Emap shares will close above 475.8p on 17-Jun-08.
Therefore you buy at 475.8p for a stake of, let's say, £3 per penny.
When 'Buying' a spread bet your P&L is worked out by taking the difference between the closing price of the relevant market and the price you bought that market at, in this case 475.8p. You then multiply that by the stake per penny of share movement.
So if the shares closed at 525p, then:
Profit/loss = (525.0p - 475.8p) x £3 per penny stake.
= 49.2p x £3 per penny stake.
= £147.60 profit.
Trading doesn't always go to plan. Had Emap shares fallen and the market closed at a lower than expected price of 430p, then you would have made a loss.
Loss = (430.0p - 475.8p) x £3 per penny stake.
Loss = -45.8p x £3 per penny stake.
= -£137.40 loss.

Where can I Find Candlestick Charts for Emap?
Like live prices, if you want to access to candlestick charts then you generally need to open an account with a spread betting company. Note that accounts are subject to status.

You can often alter the charts to see market data by the minute, by the hour, by the week etc. There are also other settings that you can easily add such as Bollinger Bands and Moving Averages.
