How to Spread Bet on Dutch Shares - Elsevier Rolling Daily
Should you want to speculate on European listed companies such as Elsevier then one option could be to spread bet on the Elsevier share price.
Looking at the FinancialSpreads.com spread betting site, they are currently pricing the Elsevier Rolling Daily market at €8.83 - €8.86. Therefore, an investor can spread trade on the Elsevier share price:
- Going higher than €8.86, or
- Going lower than €8.83
When spread trading on Dutch equities you trade in £x per cent. Therefore, should you decide to risk £6 per cent and the Elsevier share price changes by €0.05 then that would make a difference to your bottom line of £30. £6 per cent x €0.05 = £30.
Note that you can also spread bet on this market in Dollars or Euros, e.g. $x per cent.
Rolling Daily Equities Markets
Be aware that this is a Rolling Daily Market and so unlike a normal spread betting futures market, there is no settlement date. If your trade is still open at the end of the trading day, it just rolls over to the next trading session.
If your bet is rolled over and you are speculating that the market will:
- Rise - then you are normally charged a small financing fee, or
- Fall - then a small payment is usually credited to your account

Elsevier Rolling Daily - Dutch Shares Spread Trading Example
So, if you think about the above spread of €8.83 - €8.86 and assume that:
- you have done your market analysis, and
- it leads you to feel that the Elsevier share price will increase and move higher than €8.86
then you may decide that you are going to buy at €8.86 for a stake of £3 per cent.
So, you make a profit of £3 for every cent that the Elsevier shares increase and go above €8.86. Having said that, it also means that you will make a loss of £3 for every cent that the Elsevier market moves lower than €8.86.
Looking at this from another angle, if you buy a spread bet then your profit/loss is worked out by taking the difference between the closing price of the market and the price you bought the market at. You then multiply that price difference by the stake.
If after a few days the stock rose then you might consider closing your position so that you can secure your profit.
As an example, should the market rise, the spread, set by the spreads firm, might be adjusted to €9.13 - €9.16. You would close/settle your spread bet by selling at €9.13. Accordingly, with the same £3 stake your profit would come to:
Profits (or losses) = (Settlement Price - Opening Price) x stake
Profits (or losses) = (€9.13 - €8.86) x £3 per cent stake
Profits (or losses) = €0.27 x £3 per cent stake
Profits (or losses) = 27c x £3 per cent stake
Profits (or losses) = £81 profit
Speculating on shares is not straightforward. With this example, you had bet that the share price would go up. Naturally, the share price might fall.
If the Elsevier shares weakened, against your expectations, then you might choose to close your spread bet in order to limit your losses.
So if the market dropped to €8.55 - €8.58 then this means you would settle your spread bet by selling at €8.55. If so, that would mean you would lose:
Profits (or losses) = (Settlement Price - Opening Price) x stake
Profits (or losses) = (€8.55 - €8.86) x £3 per cent stake
Profits (or losses) = -€0.31 x £3 per cent stake
Profits (or losses) = -31c x £3 per cent stake
Profits (or losses) = -£93 loss

Where can I Find Candlestick Charts for Elsevier?
