How to Spread Bet on US Shares - Du Pont Rolling Daily
Should you decide to speculate on firms like Du Pont then one option could be to spread bet on the Du Pont share price.
If you were to look at the Financial Spreads site, they are valuing the Du Pont Rolling Daily market at $37.27 - $37.32. As a result, an investor can spread trade on the Du Pont shares:
- Going higher than $37.32, or
- Going lower than $37.27
When spread betting on US shares you trade in £x per cent. As a result, should you decide to invest £4 per cent and the Du Pont share price changes by $0.05 then there would be a difference to your profits (or losses) of £20. £4 per cent x $0.05 = £20.

Rolling Daily Equities Markets
It is important to note that this is a Rolling Daily Market and so unlike a normal spread betting futures market, there is no closing date. If your trade is open at the end of the day, it just rolls over into the next session.
If your spread bet is rolled over and you are speculating that the market will:
- Go up - then you will usually be charged a small overnight financing fee, or
- Go down - then you will normally receive a small credit to your account

Du Pont Rolling Daily - US Equities Spread Trading Example
So, if you think about the spread of $37.27 - $37.32 and assume that:
- you have done your research, and
- it leads you to feel that the Du Pont share price will rise above $37.32
then you could decide to buy at $37.32 and invest £2 per cent.
Therefore, you win £2 for every cent that the Du Pont shares increase and move higher than $37.32. However, it also means that you will lose £2 for every cent that the Du Pont market falls below $37.32.
Looked at another way, should you buy a spread bet then your profit/loss is calculated by taking the difference between the final price of the market and the initial price you bought the market at. You then multiply that price difference by the stake.
As a result, if after a few hours the shares started to increase then you might want to close your spread bet in order to lock in your profit.
Taking this a step further, if the market rose then the spread might move to $37.92 - $37.97. In order to close your trade you would sell at $37.92. Accordingly, with the same £2 stake your profit would be:
Profit / loss = (Settlement Level - Initial Level) x stake
Profit / loss = ($37.92 - $37.32) x £2 per cent stake
Profit / loss = $0.60 x £2 per cent stake
Profit / loss = 60¢ x £2 per cent stake
Profit / loss = £120 profit
Speculating on equities, whether by spread trading or otherwise, may not go to plan. In the above example, you had bet that the share price would rise. Naturally, the share price can also decrease.
If the Du Pont stock began to drop then you could choose to close your position to limit your losses.
Should the spread pull back to $36.67 - $36.72 you would settle your position by selling at $36.67. Accordingly, your loss would be:
Profit / loss = (Settlement Level - Initial Level) x stake
Profit / loss = ($36.67 - $37.32) x £2 per cent stake
Profit / loss = -$0.65 x £2 per cent stake
Profit / loss = -65¢ x £2 per cent stake
Profit / loss = -£130 loss
