How to Spread Bet on DS Smith

How to Spread Bet on DS Smith?

Should an investor decide to invest in UK companies like DS Smith then one solution could be spread trading on the DS Smith share price.

Looking at a spread trading site like Capital Spreads, you can see that they are valuing the DS Smith Rolling Daily market at 212.4p - 213.1p. As a result, you can spread bet on the DS Smith share price:

DS Smith Spread Trading Example Increasing above 213.1p, or
DS Smith Spread Betting Example Decreasing below 212.4p

Whilst making a spread bet on FTSE 350 equities you trade in £x per penny. As a result, if you decided to invest £4 per penny and the DS Smith share price moves 34p then there would be a difference to your profit/loss of £136. £4 per penny x 34p = £136.

Rolling Daily Shares Markets

Be aware that this is a Rolling Daily Market and so there is no closing date for this market. If you leave your position open at the end of the day, it will simply roll over to the next trading day.

If a position is rolled over and you are speculating on the market to:

DS Smith Spread Betting Example Go higher - then you'll usually be charged a small overnight financing fee, or
DS Smith Spread Betting Example Go lower - then you will normally receive a small credit to your account

If you would like a fully worked example then see Rolling Daily Spread Betting.

DS Smith Rolling Daily - Equities Spread Betting Example

So, if you consider the spread of 212.4p - 213.1p and make the assumptions that:
  • You've done your research, and
  • Your analysis suggests that the DS Smith share price will push higher than 213.1p
Then you might decide that you are going to buy at 213.1p for a stake of £10 per penny.

With such a bet you make a profit of £10 for every penny that the DS Smith shares increase and move above 213.1p. Having said that, you will make a loss of £10 for every penny that the DS Smith market decreases lower than 213.1p.

Put another way, if you were to ‘Buy’ a spread bet then your profit/loss is calculated by taking the difference between the settlement price of the market and the price you bought the market at. You then multiply that difference in price by your stake.

As a result, if after a few sessions the stock rose then you might want to close your trade and therefore lock in your profits. Taking this a step further, if the market rose then the spread, set by the spread betting company, could change to 223.8p - 224.5p. To close your position you would sell at 223.8p. As a result, with the same £10 stake your profit would be:

Profit / loss = (Final Price - Opening Price) x stake
Profit / loss = (223.8p - 213.1p) x £10 per penny stake
Profit / loss = 10.7p x £10 per penny stake
Profit / loss = £107.00 profit

Trading shares can fail to go to plan. In the above example, you had bet that the share price would increase. Of course, it can also fall.

If the DS Smith shares had started to drop then you might decide to settle/close your position to limit your losses.

If the market fell to 203.8p - 204.5p then you would settle your spread bet by selling at 203.8p. That would mean you would make a loss of:

Profit / loss = (Final Price - Opening Price) x stake
Profit / loss = (203.8p - 213.1p) x £10 per penny stake
Profit / loss = -9.3p x £10 per penny stake
Profit / loss = -£93.00 loss

Note: DS Smith Rolling Daily equities market quoted as of 31-Oct-12.
