UK Market Comment, 8 March 2012
Closing comments from David Jones, Chief Market Strategist, IG Index:
Approaching the UK close, the FTSE has managed to maintain most of its morning gains, and is up 51 points (0.9%) at 5842.
The FTSE's gains today have been bettered across Europe's major bourses, with the DAX and CAC both rising in excess of 1%, after increasingly optimistic noises over a successful outcome for the Greek bond swap deal.
With the deadline of 8pm fast approaching, we can expect to find out at 6am tomorrow morning.
Adding to the latest wave of positive sentiment was a better-than-expected increase in German industrial output for December. This came after a jump in construction activity led to a 1.6% rise in production following a 2.6% fall the month before.
Earlier today, the central banks of the UK and Eurozone kept base rates at their current levels of 0.5% and 1% respectively, marking three years for the UK's record-low interest rates.
Across the Atlantic, it's been a slightly more muted, but still positive start, with the Dow up 47 points (0.4%).
After what is hoped will be a positive outcome for Greece and the Eurozone, all eyes will turn to Friday afternoon's Non Farm Payrolls.
A third consecutive upbeat reading could herald a more optimistic ending to a week which began in rather more gloomy fashion.

UK Market Comment, 7 March 2012
Closing comments from Chris Beauchamp, Market Analyst, IG Index:
Markets have shown little appetite to add to the gains made this morning, with the FTSE looking to end the day 25 points higher.
Stock markets remain firmly in consolidation mode, as investors recover their composure after yesterday's heavy falls.
There has been little reason to get excited today, as ADP numbers were almost exactly in line with expectations, showing that the US economy added 216,000 jobs, just ahead of the 215,000 forecast.
Previous numbers from this data point have been significantly better than forecasts, but this number at least suggests that there might not be too many fireworks on Friday when the Non Farm Payrolls data is released.
In individual shares, Admiral has bobbed higher following decent profit numbers, while mining stocks have tempted in the buyers after two days of heavy falls.
Looking ahead, final news on the Greek bond swap is expected on Thursday evening, and this, combined with Friday's US employment numbers, means that markets are likely to remain in 'wait and see' mode for much of the second half of this week.
Traders will be wary of being caught out by these twin events, suggesting the current period of quiet trading is not finished just yet.
