How to Spread Bet on Equities - Darty Shares?

At the time of publication the Darty (December) market is 118.8p - 119.7p with Paddypowertrader. This market expires on 15-Dec-09.

Like many financial markets, you can bet on the future price of shares, like Darty shares, increasing or decreasing. For the above market you can spread trade on Darty shares settling:
  • Above 119.7p, or
  • Below 118.8p
On the expiry date for this market, 15-Dec-09.

When spread betting on UK equities, you trade in £x per penny where a penny, in this case, is 1p of Darty share price movement.

For example, if your stake was £20 per penny and the Darty shares move 4p then that would be an £80 difference to your profit / loss.

Spread Betting Example - Darty

So consider the above spread of 118.8p - 119.7p and that you've done your analysis and you think that Darty shares look like they will finish higher than 119.7p on 15-Dec-09.

As a result, you buy at 119.7p for a stake of, let's say, £10 per penny.

When 'Buying' a spread bet your P&L is worked out by taking the difference between the closing value and the your buy price of 119.7p and then multiplying that by the stake per penny of share price movement.

So if, let's say, by the closing date the market settled at 135p, then:

Profit/Loss = (135.0p - 119.7p) x £10 per penny stake.

= 15.3p x £10 per penny stake.

= £153 profit.

Nevertheless, if the market didn't move as predicted and the Darty shares had fallen, with the market closing at a lower than expected price of 105p, you would have lost.

Loss = (105.0p - 119.7p) x £10 per penny stake.

Loss = -14.7p x £10 per penny stake.

= -£147 loss.

(Note: spread trading markets quoted as of 25-Jul-09).
